Aibu to not like drag Queens?

Draggedalong1 · 01/01/2022 12:04

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

I find them scary. My toddlers find them scary.

January 1st and there's an I don't like drag queen thread, it's like Groundhog Day on MN Grin
YANBU for not liking drag.
You like what you like.
On the other hand, YABU in my opinion as I like seeing drag, and see it as just a way of people expressing themselves.
Not woman face which is ridiculous and also have seen black people on these discussions before saying how offensive that is to even compare the two.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2022 00:04

Yes kids in drag I often find a bit odd to look at...much like when I see kids do stand up or sing grown up songs in grown up clothes!
It always looks a little weird to me when kids do what I'd class as adult things!

doorornottodoor · 04/01/2022 00:05

@Draggedalong1 shocking. What are his parents thinking Angry. What kind of people pay to watch a 14 year old drag queen.Hmm Red flags everywhere here.

If it's just about the looking older and make up aspect I can agree with this (not if it's an urgh, boy dressing in girls clothes and makeup! reaction though which is the usual reaction on drag threads) If it's genuinely not liking kids looking older than they are, that's fair enough - was watching Bugsy Malone the other day when it was on telly and did seem a bit weird and yuk all the kids playing adults!

Thats exactly what it is! I love drag. Just kids looking older or like adults freaks me out 🤣

notimeforaname I’m so sorry, I posted an apology straight away and it somehow didn’t work. I do apologise, I have cut and pasted wrongly and of course I respect that you don’t subscribe to these views and do respect other people’s opinions.
Also, I’m not sure that I categorically don’t like drag - I like clever comedy , I understand the history.. I’m trying to understand why I’m not keen on current drag. There’s been some thought provoking suggestions here for and against, and interesting side discussions too.

It's grim. Grotesque.

But I don't think the intention is to disrespect women. I think it's to allow men to express themselves with absolute freedom to explore the extremes of the stereotypical 'female' self-camouflaging - hair, make up, clothes, posturing behaviour.

It is boundary-crossing in a pink wig.

I personally find it deeply disturbing and it makes me never want to wear make up again 🙈

I’m happy for boys and girls to wear whatever dresses etc they like - I think it’s totally the overt sexualisation. The clothes are all a bit porn star

Why? Genuine question.
Why place what others do on how you see yourself?
I genuinely don't get it.
Just be happy being you.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2022 00:25

No problem Draggedalong1 I really like your approach to this thread.

99% of the drag I have seen is live drag, in Ireland. So I really have no experience with the 'shocking' drag people talk about on here.

Some people are more easily offended and shocked by things, others are not.
In today's world nothing really shocks me.

Last time I was shocked by a performer was gaga in the meat dress. But that's only because I'm a vegetarian and the fatty bits made me queasy! 😆

Draggedalong1 · 04/01/2022 00:38

Aww, you are nice! It is certainly an interesting discussion.
Hadn’t thought of gaga in the meat dress like that, so of course, now I see your point of view that’s given me another layer to see the dress through. Cool! 😜

Draggedalong1
It's a little sad my first half thought for split second was ''is she being sarcastic with me''?? as I'm genuinely not used to people being so nice and respectful on these types of threads where opinions differ greatly!

Hope in humanity restored for the evening by you op !!Grin

I am one of the rare Mumsnetters who really enjoy Ru Paul's uk drag race , the characters behind the drag etc , their stories of overcoming disapproval from their families or society etc and the journey they go and grow on.
I haven't ever found it offensive , I've only read some of the thread so far.

sjxoxo · 04/01/2022 01:43

I also find it a bit repulsive and whilst I understand the acts are sort of light hearted I find them offensive to women on occasion. It’s just mens fantasy idea of women which is obviously boobs eyelashes and lipstick. Wouldn’t ever pay to watch a show etc, it’s not a community I can relate to at all. x

Not that rare perhaps - me too!
CailleachGranda · 04/01/2022 03:12

I like drag. I'm not offended by it at all

I don't really recognise some of the more extreme examples given

We're going to see RPDR tour later this year mainly because of Ella Vaday.

AppleJane · 04/01/2022 07:45

This thread is almost full and I’ve read all of it. I still can’t decide how I feel about it. On the one hand I feel women always get the shitty end of the stick in society and other groups always think their rights trump those of women.

But I also agree that we should protect freedom of speech and that comedy should be allowed to include content that is offensive (as long as it’s not illegal or hate speech) Ricky Gervais explains it better than me.

But most of all I believe in debate and there have been some very interesting discussions on this thread. I believe one day the same people who are trying to cancel JK Rowling will also try to cancel drag queens. And if that happened I think ultimately I would have to defend the drag queens, even if I don’t agree with them!

Draggedalong1 · 04/01/2022 07:59

What a great point. Apple Jane.

I don't think anyone was suggesting drag should be banned. Just discussing personal responses to it. Although one poster seems fixated on the fact it's legal.

I've found it interesting how a large majority of women don't like it and are sick of it being so ubiquitous. I think it's been massively overdone in recent years, and people have attempted to position what was once a niche, edgy and subversive adult entertainment as some kind of civil rights movement for all the family. Very odd, really.

hangonamo · 04/01/2022 08:41

What do you base this on?
