...to think that 'Single Ladies' is garbage?

Just watching some crap on TV, and a bunch of people are saying about how Beyonce's Single Ladies is all about female empowerment. This seems to be utter bollocks - the line 'put a ring on it' is one of the worst, most demeaning song lyrics ever, and referring to women/a woman as 'it' is the least of it's problems??

Sorry, but i f-ing HATE that song...

I liked Beyonce when it first came out and when I watched it I was... "What fresh hell is this..." Ignoring the fact that the music is just noise to my ears, the lyrics were basically I'm playing games and making you jealous because you didn't give me what I wanted. 'I'm up on him, he up on me, don't pay him any attention' - that's EXACTLY what you want him to do Grin

I think it was a hit because of the dance craze though.

Regardless of the lyrics, I agree that the song is very irritating. It’s not really my genre though, and clearly a lot of people disagree with me!

I don't find it offensive. The ring is an engagement ring and the it is the ring finger. I see it more as 'if you want to be in a committed relationship, act committed'. Not necessarily a ring but showing obvious signs of being faithful.

The it still refers to the finger as many pp posters have said. I assume the first it is there relationship then.

And dancing in underwear does nothing for female empowerment. But "sex" sells. All she's missing is a pole. I feel sorry for young women trying to make it in the music industry today. Girl next door just won't cut it anymore, sadly.
