Just watching some crap on TV, and a bunch of people are saying about how Beyonce's Single Ladies is all about female empowerment. This seems to be utter bollocks - the line 'put a ring on it' is one of the worst, most demeaning song lyrics ever, and referring to women/a woman as 'it' is the least of it's problems??

@SageRosemary I agree that life must be hard to navigate as a young woman in music these days (although, there are a lot of feminist artists) with social media, surgery, image fakery etc...but not everyone wants to be a girl next door. What does one even look like? Or act like?

It's a shit song, shit music and overplayed to fuck at the time. I'm not exactly a fan, and my idea of female empowerment isn't finding someone to marry you. But it's a bit of a stretch to say any of this type of shite has any meaning, offensive or otherwise. And if you do think it has, it's still far from having the most demeaning song lyrics.

The two "it"s aren't referring to the same thing. It's basically if you liked being with me then you should have put a ring on my finger, but that isn't catchy nor does it fit the beat, does it?

However, I find the song really annoying and I don't like Beyoncé's music so I agree that it's a bad song.

Also, this is far from the most demeaning song unfortunately. There are songs by men about literally getting young women to have sex with you and then ditching them.

Robin Thicke -Blurred lines
Eminem - many of his songs
