...to think that 'Single Ladies' is garbage?

Just watching some crap on TV, and a bunch of people are saying about how Beyonce's Single Ladies is all about female empowerment. This seems to be utter bollocks - the line 'put a ring on it' is one of the worst, most demeaning song lyrics ever, and referring to women/a woman as 'it' is the least of it's problems??

Sorry, but i f-ing HATE that song...

@sst1234 Except it's not satire for us women of colour who do experience this everyday!

Big bums were obscene until Kim K made it fashion, same with braids and cane rows/boxer braids.
Big lips were not the beauty standard on black women but now on social media it's the aspiration.

Of course you can dislike things by black people but people often drag black women down and celebrate when white women or men do the exact same. Look at the comments of people finding it amazing when Liza Minelli does a rendition of it on SATC ! (Which in itself is a programme with so many issues!)

rocky1914 · 01/01/2022 12:05

...and yes, as much as I love Eminem, he is definitely up there with some of the most violent and misogynistic lyrics I have ever come across 🤦‍♀️

phishy · 01/01/2022 12:08

@sst1234

Ah of course. No one is allowed to dislike anything by an artist who is black. Your comment is so cliched, it’s like satire.

There is a huge delta between ‘I don’t like Single Ladies’ and ‘Single Ladies is the “most demeaning song”’

If you can’t see that then you’re not worth arguing with.

cherryonthecakes · 01/01/2022 12:21

If you don't believe in marriage then maybe the song is annoying but there are plenty of women who'd like marriage after years in a committed relationship- especially as they'd like children and further financial enmeshment.
While wanting to get married isn't a universal desire, there's nothing wrong with wanting marriage if that's what you want.

EinsteinaGogo · 01/01/2022 13:14

@SunshineOnKeith

The line is 'if you like me then you should have put a ring on it' whilst pointing to her finger.

It's a song about not waiting around for a man who won't commit, so yeah pretty feminist.

Perhaps you should actually listen to the song before getting affronted based on your misinterpretation?

@SunshineOnKeith

Apology to the OP needed, hmmmm?

SunshineOnKeith · 01/01/2022 13:17
@SunshineOnKeith I mean, what solid evidence did they have though? Except for the people that came forward and "claimed" he abused them? Genuine question btw as I haven't actually looked into the case in detail. Please enlighten me if I have missed something..?
@rocky1914
Multiple allegations of abuse from multiple alleged victims from 1993-2014
Boys fingerprints on pornographic material in his bedroom
Confirmation that he as a grown man shared beds with multiple prepubescent and teenage boys
At least one boy able to accurately draw the distinctive markings on Jackson's penis
Payment of >20 million to an alleged victims family to get them to drop charges as well as numerous payments to other families
Confirmation that he was an abuser from his own sister

I agree he's not been convicted, but I don't believe the criminal justice system is infallible, especially where celebrities are concerned and I cannot think of any other reasonable explanation for the known facts

This is a decent summary:

@EinsteinaGogo
Maybe read the full thread?
The OP was affronted based on her misinterpretation of the song.
It doesn't mean what she thought it means

rocky1914 · 01/01/2022 13:22

@SunshineOnKeith wtffff?! Ooook time for me to do some research. The distinctive marks on his genitals.. this has shaken me up a little because.. children very rarely lie. Especially about something as specific as markings on someone's skin. That's not something a child could make up. Hmm.. thanks for the link, going to check this out 👍

EinsteinaGogo · 01/01/2022 13:23

@SunshineOnKeith

I have read the whole thread.

You waded in with the wrong lyrics and told OP she was in the wrong.

Shame.

Well the OP is wrong - the song doesn't refer to a women as 'it' and is clearly a feminist song about setting clear boundaries.
The OP was wrong about both of those things

SunshineOnKeith · 01/01/2022 13:32

Which part of the OP specifically do you think is correct @EinsteinaGogo ?
Confused

KittenKong · 01/01/2022 13:37
think it was a hit because of the dance craze though

The dance is shit was well. I never got the beyonce love.

And i don’t get the lyrics either. Why is a ring and marriage yet again presented as what every woman wants? Fuck off.

I like this version better anyway:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=w8qaGcq8Ruk
I’ve seen a version of pretty much the same choreography from the 70s - I forget who it was but this was an absolute copy. Apart from the flared trouser suits.

EinsteinaGogo · 01/01/2022 13:41

@SunshineOnKeith

Which part of the OP specifically do you think is correct *@EinsteinaGogo* ? Confused

You've decided the definition of 'it'.

It could well be a woman.
It could well be the relationship
It could well be sex

There is no formal Beyoncé clarification that I'm aware of.

Yet you did categorically state that the OP had the lyrics wrong (she did not - you did).

Why did you do that?

Chocaholic9 · 01/01/2022 13:43

Beyonce is no icon of women's empowerment ,let's put it that way.

EinsteinaGogo · 01/01/2022 13:43

@SunshineOnKeith - this ^^^

Out of interest, why did you tell OP was wrong and yourself, quote the wrong lyrics?

SunshineOnKeith · 01/01/2022 13:51

@EinsteinaGogo
Because I'd misheard them. That does happen you know. And as you've RTFT, you'll see I acknowledged that

Do you also think the OP owes us all a personal apology as She misunderstood the lyrics and thought the line 'put a ring on it' refers to a woman, when in fact it refers to the finger (pointed to in the dance for clarity)

She also seems to have misunderstood the female empowerment aspect of the song and claims it is the 'the worst, most demeaning song lyrics ever'
Or is it just my errors you're personally policing?

SunshineOnKeith · 01/01/2022 13:52

@EinsteinaGogo
Gosh you're very invested in me mishearing a single word aren't you? Grin

PinkiOcelot · 01/01/2022 13:54

It’s just repetitive, screeching shite. But saying that, I don’t like any of her/their music.

Aderyn21 · 01/01/2022 13:58

To me it implies that her only value is if a man values her, so not especially feminist imo. And that getting married confers some kind of ownership/is the only thing which matters.

Realityisreal · 01/01/2022 13:59

I don't dislike the song or Beyonce but hadn't previously listened to all of the lyrics, I did think it was supposed to be a bit of a feminist anthem but looking at the lyrics posted earlier in the thread I've changed my mind.

Don't treat me to the things of the world
I'm not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Here's a man that makes me then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
Pull me into your arms, say I'm the one you own
If you don't, you'll be alone
And like a ghost Ill be gone
All the single ladies, all the single ladies

These lyrics make it a song about giving 'him' yet another chance and so much for empowerment, she's saying she'll go back to him if he says he OWNS her.

SalveVagina · 01/01/2022 14:14

@KiloWhat Fair enough - I don't know anything about her private life.

I do know the song, though, and it's terrible.

You think she's misinterpreted the song.
I don't. Others don't. There's no one certain definition, despite you being so convinced there is.

I'm interested in the psychology of people who challenge arrogantly without fact checking easy things. I wonder if they do it in real life. Applies to you in this case, nothing personal.

SunshineOnKeith · 01/01/2022 14:40

Fair enough. I personally think the context of the lyrics and the pointing to her finger when she says 'ring on it' implies pretty strongly that she's referencing her finger rather than referring to herself as 'it'. As do most others on this thread. And the OP has also acknowledged her comment about the lyric being the most offensive is inaccurate. It's good that some of us are happy to acknowledge our errors/misunderstandings/agree to disagree and move on

However, you're perfectly free to cling to your beliefs that the 'it' refers toBeyoncé herself, and thus that it's the most demeaning lyric ever to women - you've clearly given it a lot of thought and are perfectly entitled to your opinion Grin

I'm interested in the psychology of people who challenge arrogantly without fact checking easy things. I wonder if they do it in real life. Applies to you in this case, nothing personal.

Glad to be of service! Not entirely sure what you aimed to learn about my psychology by demanding an apology and 'shaming' me though for mishearing a word though? Doesn't seem the most constructive approach, but then you clearly know much more than I do Wink

feistymumma · 01/01/2022 14:46

Complete garbage

feistymumma · 01/01/2022 14:47

@Kittykat93

It's a shit song. Don't think it's catchy at all. Beyonce is overrated..yeah I said it.
This! 💯
