...to think that 'Single Ladies' is garbage?

Just watching some crap on TV, and a bunch of people are saying about how Beyonce's Single Ladies is all about female empowerment. This seems to be utter bollocks - the line 'put a ring on it' is one of the worst, most demeaning song lyrics ever, and referring to women/a woman as 'it' is the least of it's problems??

Sorry, but i f-ing HATE that song...

@rocky1914

She should bin her husband then. He cheats on her, he isn’t exactly committed to her.

My point exactly. And off topic but her husband had the nerve to say that he thinks that Beyoncé is more talented than the late MJ. I spat out my tea. This generation is LOST

I guess she has the benefit of not being a paedophile though
rocky1914 · 31/12/2021 22:33

@SunshineOnKeith I don't believe he was a paedophile so I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree on that one 🤷‍♀️

Fair enough.
Odd conclusion if you look at the evidence though
But then OJ was innocent too so what do I know 🤷‍♀️

@TheValeyard

I'm pretty sure "it" is referring to a finger.

So 'if you like it' means 'if you like my finger'? Intriguing...

🤣🤣 love this response!
Thedogscollar · 31/12/2021 22:41

Love this song.
She sounds and looks amazing.
She is in control binning the non committal boyfriend.

SukiPook · 31/12/2021 22:41

I don't find it offensive or anything -it's total pish though.

Lanique · 31/12/2021 22:43

I'm watching the same programme. When this was on I said to dh that I think I must be abnormal or something because the song is utter shite and nothing would ever make me dance to it because I'd look and feel like a total bellend.

Wanderingowl · 31/12/2021 22:46

I'm another of the Beyonce non-fans. I find most of her songs that I've heard incredibly dull and monotonous. I heard that Crazy in Love had one some poll as being the best song of the century so far and the dj was saying he couldn't think of a better song in the last 20 years. What fucking crap, tbh.

ThePlumVan · 31/12/2021 22:46

It’s cringe.

It’s like saying anyone without ‘a ring on it’ isn't liked enough by anyone.

…..or maybe the lady just don’t like them back !!!

TrainspottingWelsh · 31/12/2021 22:48

@GladysTheOstrich genuinely, how does that work? If you have to put all personal views aside, then surely students could be asked to study eg happy hardcore alongside Aretha Franklin. And of course, whether you like Aretha Franklin or not you should still be able to analyse/ contextualise it. But I'm really struggling to think how someone could be expected to do the same with happy hardcore unless it's to their taste. Or is it the case that they're only expected to do so for music someone else has deemed worthy? Which then brings personal views back into play.

No, I was talking about putting a ring on her finger. Your New Year's Eve must be pretty dire if this is a concern to you........ maybe get some music on. Oh oh oh.

NearlyAHoarder · 31/12/2021 22:54

I don't think it's feminist but I think it's a good reminder to women out there that it's OK to have a boundary, ok to move on if somebody exercises their right not to commit to you or marry you, you don't have to just shrug sadly and settle for that.

I could be talking out of my ass here but that ''baby daddy'' thing is something that some men have taken to like lazy entitled ducks to water so............... if that's the dating pool. God help the single ladies.

GladysTheOstrich · 31/12/2021 22:57

@TrainspottingWelsh

The exam board chooses the artist/composer, plus a selection of their work. Because happy hardcore is quite niche and has quite a specific audience (and also, it could be argued, a lack of musical contrast across the genre in general), it wouldn't be chosen. I'm sure the examiners have protracted conversations/arguments about what should be included/excluded!

To go back to your example, reasons for including Aretha would be longevity, representative of soul/gospel, a black woman (EDI is important), critically and popularly acclaimed. Reasons to exclude happy hardcore would be lack of variation/contrast in tempo, rhythm, harmony and melody across a range of works, lack of critical and general popular acclaim.

NoNameHere12 · 31/12/2021 22:58

Her lemonade album is second to none, I do love that one

Xmasiscancelledagain · 31/12/2021 23:00

@SunshineOnKeith

The line is 'if you like me then you should have put a ring on it' whilst pointing to her finger.

It's a song about not waiting around for a man who won't commit, so yeah pretty feminist.

Perhaps you should actually listen to the song before getting affronted based on your misinterpretation?

Oh the irony of Beyonce singing about a man who won't commit.
Cocogreen · 31/12/2021 23:01

Have I time travelled back to 2008????

Why all the passionate hate for this song?
It's fun and gets people up dancing at weddings
There are so many more offensive songs - some rap song lyrics are dire re attitudes towards women.

whynotwhatknot · 31/12/2021 23:08

You have heard WAP then op-i nearly spat my drink out first time i heard that

Yeah, because she forced a man who wouldn't commit to put a ring on it and then was surprised and hurt when he cheated...
EachandEveryone · 31/12/2021 23:27

Shes not a patch on Madonna.

CatJumperTwat · 31/12/2021 23:29

I like Beyoncé but Single Ladies is an awful song. Something about the tune/music/something gives me a visceral reaction of disgust.

Goldilocks99 · 31/12/2021 23:35

Imme let you finish op.
Taylor is that you?

Oh urgh that song is nasty

There was a huge thread about it , loads of posters were "Oh , it's empowering, why should a woman be ashamed of their sex drive , they look great in the video " Hmm

Lyrics about "I don't cook or clean but ask me how I got this ring" and "Ask him for a car while you ride his dick"

So basically a gold digger then .

VladmirsPoutine · 31/12/2021 23:39

@EachandEveryone You're right! Beyonce is in a league of her own! Nobody's peer!

debbrianna · 31/12/2021 23:56

I can see the beyonce hate has arrived on here too. I hope she continues to do what she does best and continues to be herself.

TrainspottingWelsh · 01/01/2022 00:06

@GladysTheOstrich thanks for explaining. And sorry if it came across as if I was suggesting you personally choose artists to your tastes, I didn't mean it that way.

The criteria still doesn't seem to make sense on a personal level. Aretha Franklin, yes of course, there's huge scope. As would there be for loads of other artists, whatever your personal taste. But everything you say about happy hardcore, minus popular acclaim I think is applicable to Beyoncé and others of that era. Like happy hardcore, you can't appreciate it on the music alone. (Although at least happy hardcore fans generally had the excuse of being on drugs at the time!)

Obviously I'm not suggesting the criteria should change because I don't agree, it just seems like an odd choice when there are so many others.
