Son’s Birth Has Been Immortalised On A Cushion

Let me preface by saying I love my father in law.

But he’s of the sentimental tat type. Blue ‘I love you’ bears, photo frames and key rings and the like. Forever Friends stuff from the early 90’s. Things in baskets. Ornaments of animals hugging each other for no reason, wearing tutus.

We said no presents this year because I don’t want the tat. But we said it was because we just moved and didn’t want more stuff. He didn’t listen obviously, the baby has about ten ‘baby’s first Christmas’ outfits now. We didn’t even see FIL until Boxing Day.

But the icing on the Christmas cake of tat this year- a cushion he’s had printed, with the biggest picture of me holding the baby about two minutes after he was sliced out of me 😂

And lots of little pictures around the edge of me and the baby looking rough on the ward because it was hotter than the sun and everybody was crying. And one of the baby naked and bewildered getting weighed.

Now, I don’t have much issue of him being in possession of these pictures, DH sent them because he was going nuts asking for updates and crazing the ward to let him visit.

But on a cushion?! It’ll have to go in a cupboard and put on the sofa when he visits because he will ask where it is.

What present did you get that you can’t get rid of but will be hiding away?

Hospedia · 31/12/2021 18:03

Thank goodness you've got the cushion to remind you that you've had a baby Grin

ShaneTheThird · 31/12/2021 18:04

Oh God love him that's hilariously sweet Grin

WulyJmpr · 31/12/2021 18:04

Sounds grim but well-intentioned. You have my sympathies

Marmite27 · 31/12/2021 18:04

Oh bless him. My mum is like this, what should be lovely thoughtful presents but they completely miss the mark.

She tries though, and that’s the main thing.

Clawdy · 31/12/2021 18:06

He does sound lovely!

Emerald5hamrock · 31/12/2021 18:06

🤣 Oh my, how did you keep a straight face.

Sparklesocks · 31/12/2021 18:06

Oh wow. Not something you want resting on the sofa is it Grin but bless him, he tried I suppose

Fridafever · 31/12/2021 18:07

Oh that’s adorable 😂

Sideswiped · 31/12/2021 18:13

Oh dear, you can't even re-gift something like that, can you? Grin

WheelieBinPrincess · 31/12/2021 18:14

It’s definitely not something I’d take to the charity shop, no Grin

I'll be honest here.... This isn't quite as bad as I was expecting!! Grin

Many moons ago I worked in a photo place where people brought their film in to be developed (god remember that?) it was also one of the first to print things on things.

Obviously when you got film developed we had to check them and put those little stickers on.

One guy brought in his film, and I was idly flicking through the photos and OMFG!

They were literally a stage by stage process of his baby being born.... FROM THE VAG End!! Shock

One of the last was a very very close shot of baby's head actually crowning ShockShockConfused

I was only like 19 and fucking horrified!

When the dad came back he wanted it printed on a fucking cushion.

A CUSHION FFS!!

We gently steered him towards the one of his wife holding the baby but FUCKING HELL I will never ever get over it.

So it could have been a lot, lot, lot worse, but yours is still pretty bad in a lovely kind of way! Grin

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 31/12/2021 18:17

This is one of the sweetest, and yet most awful things I’ve known someone to be given 😂 And imagine the effort he we must have gone to select the pics etc. God love him. (Although much rather you than me!)

WheelieBinPrincess · 31/12/2021 18:17

@RozHuntleysLeftHand

OH MY GOOD GOD

WhatScratch · 31/12/2021 18:17

That’s just … lovely? Grin

At least he’s put it on a cushion and not on Facebook.

seekinglondonlife · 31/12/2021 18:19

Oh he sounds lovely OP! It's so nice to be surrounded by people that really care.

PeaceONoeuf · 31/12/2021 18:20

To be fair the baby will love that so much when they are older. I’d keep in in their room.

TulipsTwoLips · 31/12/2021 18:21

My husband let his mum have our wedding photos on a memory stick.
We now have a cushion of a close up of the two of us, and a million comments from people 'sitting on our faces' when they sit down. It lasted about 3 days on the sofa before being relegated to a box in the cupboard.

DoubleHelix79 · 31/12/2021 18:21

That's exactly the sort of thing my mum would do! (And all the photos would be blurry, and taken from unflattering angles)

WheelieBinPrincess · 31/12/2021 18:22

Oh that’s a point @PeaceONoeuf! I’m sure he will.

He can have it on a shelf with the horrid little twee blue ‘I love you’ teddies!

I sooo hate stuff like that but it comes from a lovely place!

Isittimeformynapyet · 31/12/2021 18:22

You have my sympathies. I really can't stand being given sentimental crap as gifts. Anyone who knows me well enough to get me a present really ought to know that I'm a sarcastic cynic who makes throwing up noises at the end of rom-coms. How absolutely DARE they impose their dreadful schmaltz on my life!

Yeah, IABU Grin

WhatScratch · 31/12/2021 18:23

’To be fair the baby will love that so much when they are older. I’d keep in in their room.’

I was going to suggest packing it away until they’re a teenager and then threatening to put it in the living room when their friends come round unless they tidy their room/do their homework.

skellingtonboot · 31/12/2021 18:23

Oh dear OP.

Sniggering into my glass of champagne.

Almost beats going to the in-laws whilst heavily pregnant and having to watch the (betamax*) video of my husband's step sister giving birth Hmm

*it was a loooong time ago

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 31/12/2021 18:23

Yup.

It was awful.

If XP had gone anywhere NEAR that end during birth with a camera I'd have shoved it up his arse.

Count your blessings.

NewYearCalavicci · 31/12/2021 18:24

That cushion needs to be put away in one of them vacuum sealed bags an then brought out on your DC is 18 /21 birthday party Grin
