Son’s Birth Has Been Immortalised On A Cushion

Let me preface by saying I love my father in law.

But he’s of the sentimental tat type. Blue ‘I love you’ bears, photo frames and key rings and the like. Forever Friends stuff from the early 90’s. Things in baskets. Ornaments of animals hugging each other for no reason, wearing tutus.

We said no presents this year because I don’t want the tat. But we said it was because we just moved and didn’t want more stuff. He didn’t listen obviously, the baby has about ten ‘baby’s first Christmas’ outfits now. We didn’t even see FIL until Boxing Day.

But the icing on the Christmas cake of tat this year- a cushion he’s had printed, with the biggest picture of me holding the baby about two minutes after he was sliced out of me 😂

And lots of little pictures around the edge of me and the baby looking rough on the ward because it was hotter than the sun and everybody was crying. And one of the baby naked and bewildered getting weighed.

Now, I don’t have much issue of him being in possession of these pictures, DH sent them because he was going nuts asking for updates and crazing the ward to let him visit.

But on a cushion?! It’ll have to go in a cupboard and put on the sofa when he visits because he will ask where it is.

What present did you get that you can’t get rid of but will be hiding away?

God bless your FIL Op.
Despite having 4 Adult (aged over 30) Ds's I don't have any grandchildren and I know if any (ever) arrive I will be equally as proud and probably just as daft.
(In the meantime I just have to keep my desire to be a grandma to myself).

SalveVagina · 31/12/2021 20:42

@WheelieBinPrincess you just sound lovely, and so does your FIL. I'd end up sticking the cushion on the sofa and using it every day, because even if it's crushingly awful, it's meant with love, and you can't beat that.

nosyboot · 31/12/2021 20:43

For anyone else who's now got this song going round their head and who also has a filthy mind

Ok a picture in a frame, on a mug, a coaster etc fine but a cushion? Weird!

Wotagain · 31/12/2021 20:45

@WheelieBinPrincess
It’s a lovely gift. one day you will realise that no one aside from loving grandparents and perhaps siblings really gives a shiny shit about you and your baby, but that cushion will become increasingly precious as you grow up.

RosiePosieDozy · 31/12/2021 21:09

Oh no Grin It does seem like it comes from a good place but I wouldn't want that cushion on display if I was you.

I once received a bottle of tomato sauce with my face printed on the label. It was a secret Santa present at work. The gifter had seen me using tomato sauce a few weeks before when we had chips in the office.

Kona84 · 31/12/2021 21:09

I bought a bauble for my babies first Christmas. Didn’t realise I would end up with 5!!!

Jinglebellsoncake · 31/12/2021 21:12

I have one too 😂😂😂🙈

Given to me by my in laws relative. A very sweet, thoughtful present. But it's a cushion that's kept behind the sofa Grin

ivykaty44 · 31/12/2021 21:18

Can you sit on it..?

sofakingcool · 31/12/2021 21:34

@Ellowyn

I saw a picture of a new dad hold his newly born baby with his wife in the back ground legs akimbo, getting sewed back up.
My ex filmed himself dressing newborn DS in the labour suite. All sounds lovely, except I'm in the background, legs akimbo, breathing in gas and air whilst the midwife applied stitches HmmGrin

Praying he no longer has that recording!!

Twocrabs30 · 31/12/2021 21:59

I’d put it in the reading corner of your son’s bedroom. A present he sees everyday to remind him of his GF

Quirrelsotherface · 31/12/2021 22:11

This gave me such a laugh. He sounds sweet but yep, in the cupboard for the cushion and proudly displayed when FIL is due round.

BigYellowHat · 31/12/2021 22:28

I got one of those horrible inspirational quotes ‘live, laugh, love’, that kind of thing. They make me cringe so badly as I think they’re really tacky. Straight to the charity shop.

Smorgasborb · 31/12/2021 23:09

@mynameiscalypso

My PILs made us cushions the year we got married. They picked a pic of our wedding cake - fine - and a pic of the antipasti we had for a starter. I can't help feeling there should have been some more memorable moments from the day beyond a plate of out of season tomatoes and mozzarella.
Hahahahahahaahha!
JudgementalRaccoon · 01/01/2022 00:10

@Joystir59

Not as bad as I was expecting....which was a photo of your baby coming down the birth canal. On a cushion.
Like a helter skelter 🤣

@WheelieBinPrincess

Oh no honestly he is a very sweet, very doting grandpa- this isn’t even his first one but he has a soft spot because the baby shares his surname and looks like him (bald and smiley)
Bald and smiley 😂😂😂

He does sound lovely but I hear you on the tat. The bears in tutus bit cracked me up. You see that stuff and wonder who buys it. I guess I know now!

I think you definitely need to keep that cushion out of regular use because your baby will find it utterly delightful as a teenager and it would be a shame if it wore out.

Lalliella · 01/01/2022 01:14

😂😂😂 I love your FIL!

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2022 01:17

Oh bless him!!!

Wavypurple · 01/01/2022 01:20

He sounds so, so sweet. But this really did make me laugh.

noblegreenk · 01/01/2022 01:22

God bless him! Wish my dad or FIL was as sweet as that.

RicherThanYew · 01/01/2022 01:23

My nan and grandfather in law gave us a little (Ok, huge. Alright fine, it was 2ft x 3ft) painted picture of a lady dancing the flamenco that they found either in their attic or in a chazza shop. It was one of my bottom drawer items for when I would love into my own house with DH, I fully intended to actually put it up but my mum disappeared it before we even moved into the new house Xmas Sad

RicherThanYew · 01/01/2022 01:24

Move*, we certainly didn't love our first house, it was awful.

Dogmum40 · 01/01/2022 01:36

Can I join in even if I dont have kids to do the sentimental gifts?

I work in conservation and whether or not
You agree I shoot for a living and also conserve songbirds so my lovely mum and dad bought me posh pheasant pate which cost a fortune as she left the price on it and a garden ornament of blue tits in an old welly! I want to love them both but I don’t shoot for sport so pheasant pate is lost on me and I genuinely don’t get the ornament knowing I’m crap at gardening (and they know that too) I suppose I could stick the ornament in a corner somewhere, they were so excited about her gifts but I’d prefer gift vouchers or bullets if it had to be work related 😆 they said it’s something I’d treasure forever and be sentimental, I genuinely don’t see how 🙈😆 your sentimental tat is way better than my sentimental gifts of pate and a garden ornament

WheelieBinPrincess · 01/01/2022 08:19

Sentimental pheasant pate ConfusedGrin

@RicherThanYew you paint a great picture of the flamenco painting!

Bless him! He sounds really sweet but clueless 😂
@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads
I read that in the accent 😂👏🏻
Lol!

He’s a typical Yorkshireman of few words.
As it happens DS(13 now), does play cricket, but extremely badly. DD (10) however, is the proud bearer of several hat trick trophies, among others.
