Son’s Birth Has Been Immortalised On A Cushion

Let me preface by saying I love my father in law.

But he’s of the sentimental tat type. Blue ‘I love you’ bears, photo frames and key rings and the like. Forever Friends stuff from the early 90’s. Things in baskets. Ornaments of animals hugging each other for no reason, wearing tutus.

We said no presents this year because I don’t want the tat. But we said it was because we just moved and didn’t want more stuff. He didn’t listen obviously, the baby has about ten ‘baby’s first Christmas’ outfits now. We didn’t even see FIL until Boxing Day.

But the icing on the Christmas cake of tat this year- a cushion he’s had printed, with the biggest picture of me holding the baby about two minutes after he was sliced out of me 😂

And lots of little pictures around the edge of me and the baby looking rough on the ward because it was hotter than the sun and everybody was crying. And one of the baby naked and bewildered getting weighed.

Now, I don’t have much issue of him being in possession of these pictures, DH sent them because he was going nuts asking for updates and crazing the ward to let him visit.

But on a cushion?! It’ll have to go in a cupboard and put on the sofa when he visits because he will ask where it is.

What present did you get that you can’t get rid of but will be hiding away?

What about buying a nice cushion cover and pop it over the top 'to stop it getting dirty or otherwise spoiling' Wink

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 31/12/2021 18:25

Oh and definitely save it to torture the teen in future years!
Genius idea!

PeaceONoeuf · 31/12/2021 18:25

Op, the blue Teddy shelf is ideal. FiL will be pleased to see it, baby will love it - all mine would have done. They love watching themselves on home movies, looking at baby books and photos, going to Build a Bear - your FiL will come into his element later on!

Xmasiscancelledagain · 31/12/2021 18:27

It could have been worse OP.

These places that do cushions also do t-shirts, shopper bags and face masks. You could have the whole ensemble for popping to the shops.

My exact thoughts

I have one of these. Also - a tree bauble with the very first (unflattering) photo of my baby bright red, crushed against my husband's chest and swollen. This year, we received three gift bags of presents. I already have a bag for life ready for the charity shop as they aren't things I'll use and they are just clutter and junk.

If it helps to make you feel better, my MIL bought me pants. When challenged, she said she was proud that she knew the style and size of pants worn by everyone in the family including her husband's ex-wife. The pants will be getting donated also as I think it's creepy to buy your DIL underwear.

Thats very sweet of him, some people like to do all these kinds of things. Sad to hide away your FIL's interpretation of a work of art. he would be chuffed to see it on your sofa, or the cat can sit on it, if you have a cat. don't be a meanie.!

Ellowyn · 31/12/2021 18:32

I saw a picture of a new dad hold his newly born baby with his wife in the back ground legs akimbo, getting sewed back up.

mynameiscalypso · 31/12/2021 18:34

My PILs made us cushions the year we got married. They picked a pic of our wedding cake - fine - and a pic of the antipasti we had for a starter. I can't help feeling there should have been some more memorable moments from the day beyond a plate of out of season tomatoes and mozzarella.

lollipoprainbow · 31/12/2021 18:35

Please can we see a pic ?!

RussianSpy101 · 31/12/2021 18:37

Oh that’s actually really sweet!

If it helps you feel better, I was given a dairylea dunker for my 30th by my husbands Granny………

WheelieBinPrincess · 31/12/2021 18:37

@lollipoprainbow a pic would be very outing 😂

Honestly I'd find that hilarious. I'd do the whole "how lovely!" Spiel while he was there then put it in a cupboard, only to resurface for his visits, or when you want to give your friends a good laugh

He sounds like a lovely grandpa

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/12/2021 18:38

What a shame baby puked all over it, and you couldn't get the smell out.

WheelieBinPrincess · 31/12/2021 18:39

@mynameiscalypso you should be pleased they thought so highly of the food! Grin

WheelieBinPrincess · 31/12/2021 18:40

Oh no honestly he is a very sweet, very doting grandpa- this isn’t even his first one but he has a soft spot because the baby shares his surname and looks like him (bald and smiley)

Ex-H helped the children buy me a blanket with pictures of us on it. If it was just the kids it would be marginally better but every single time I pick it up I just see my wrinkly fat head.
The kids think it's amazing and we're so pleased with it i can but laugh and let it fall down the back of the sofa....

Brindle88 · 31/12/2021 18:41

When I read the thread title I thought it was a pic of the baby coming out! Grin

RedRobyn2021 · 31/12/2021 18:42

Omg this is hilarious 😆

Eloraa · 31/12/2021 18:42

Not me - thank fuck - but my uncle made a stained glass picture of the business end of his wife giving birth and presented it to her on the baby’s first birthday.

It isn’t displayed in their house.

Sandsnake · 31/12/2021 18:43

Sweet and bonkers. I’m imagining Uncle Bryn from Gavin & Stacey Grin

BronwenFrideswide · 31/12/2021 18:47

@RozHuntleysLeftHand

I'll be honest here.... This isn't quite as bad as I was expecting!! Grin

Many moons ago I worked in a photo place where people brought their film in to be developed (god remember that?) it was also one of the first to print things on things.

Obviously when you got film developed we had to check them and put those little stickers on.

One guy brought in his film, and I was idly flicking through the photos and OMFG!

They were literally a stage by stage process of his baby being born.... FROM THE VAG End!! Shock

One of the last was a very very close shot of baby's head actually crowning ShockShockConfused

I was only like 19 and fucking horrified!

When the dad came back he wanted it printed on a fucking cushion.

A CUSHION FFS!!

We gently steered him towards the one of his wife holding the baby but FUCKING HELL I will never ever get over it.

So it could have been a lot, lot, lot worse, but yours is still pretty bad in a lovely kind of way! Grin

OMG Shock Shock
5keletor · 31/12/2021 18:48

And I thought the extra large card with a huge, unflattering photo of my face on a unicorn or teddy bear from my mum most years was bad, at least that can be recycled immediately afterwards. 😂

BertieBotts · 31/12/2021 18:49

My DH would LOVE that :o

Cattitudes · 31/12/2021 18:51

I am sure his future girlfriend will absolutely love it 🤣.
