The wrong turkey!

Later today my big Christmas grocery shop is being delivered. Central to it are two organic free range turkey crowns (we are expecting a crowd). I've just got an email confirming my shopping has been picked and paid for and was very pleased to see that there were only 2 very minor substitutions...until I looked more closely and discovered that instead of the turkeys I ordered Waitrose are apparently sending me 2 turkey crowns stuffed with gingerbread.

Quite apart from the fact that they sound absolutely revolting I am annoyed that they are presumably battery farmed but cost the same price as the hugely expensive free range birds I so carefully preordered weeks ago.

I've double checked my original order in case I had gone mad and actually ordered these travesties but no, I definitely ordered the nice turkeys so it's definitely Waitrose mistake. Either they have sent me the right turkeys and put the wrong details on the receipt or 2 ginger bread flavoured birds are on their way. I won't know either way until the shopping arrives early this afternoon.

Obviously if it turns out they've sent the wrong thing I'll send them back and get a refund but that means I'll have to venture out to the shops in the pre Christmas hubbub to get a new main event - just what I was trying to avoid. I will be on tenterhooks between now and then!

I realise this is a first world problem. One way or another we will have a lovely dinner even if it ends up being meatfree. It's just annoying that despite being so smug organised and ordering everything weeks in advance the supermarket have thrown such an unexpected spanner in my plans.

YABU - eat the gingerbread flavoured turkeys and stop moaning

YANBU -turkeys should taste of turkey and gravy, with a soupçon of traditional stuffing. Gingerbread is for making little men that run very fast.

Gingerbread stuffing sounds vile

brushandmop · 22/12/2021 06:12

Yeah there can be too much Christmas in one bite......Hope you manage to salvage something from them for your dinner.

They look amazing. I don’t think the gingerbread will be overpowering.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 22/12/2021 06:19

Pray it’s a typo on their order form! I hate shopping (if anyone sees a ball shaped creature scurrying around in a grump talking to themselves about how they hate shopping, it’s probably me) , so I’d just pull out the weirdo gingerbread stuffing, re-stuff the crowns with sausagemeat, homemade sage & onion stuffing with a handful of cranberries or chestnuts, wrap them in more smoked streaky bacon & truss it back up. Add a mountain of real Cornish butter. Job’s a good ‘un.

I got a meat injector a couple of years ago, so I play Holby & inject more butter into every nook & cranny.

Then, and I cannot stress this enough, set fire to that gingerbread abomination. I have a European Dad & we’re big gingerbread/lebkuchen eaters, but gingerbread stuffing sounds like it was invented in a fever
dream.

PanettoneSeason · 22/12/2021 06:27

@Newnameobviously Gingerbread stuffing sounds bloody vile 😳🤢 Hoping it’s a typo for you OP! and if not then hopefully you can get something decent in the store 😬🤞🏼

Don’t suppose you’re willing to take one for team and cook and taste this gingerbread abomination if it arrives? 🤔🤣 99% of me is sure it must be vile - but I feel that we need a definite answer 🤣🤣

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/12/2021 06:28

I'd buy different stuffing and cook it separately
In fact that is what I am doing. I realised, only after collecting my 2 turkey crowns from Cook that there is orange in the stuffing which I can't eat. So slepped to Mark's for the traditional

FrenchBoule · 22/12/2021 06:37

YABU to expect the supermarket to have the items in stock.
It’s a bit of a Russian Roulette if you’re going to get it unless it’s made to specific order.
Decline the substitutes if you don’t like it and go to the shops to find the right masterpiece of Christmas dinner.

cloudtree · 22/12/2021 06:41

Putting in an online order only guarantees you a delivery slot. It doesn’t guarantee the items are in stock. They didn’t immediately stick your name on two turkeys.

daisychainsandrainbows · 22/12/2021 06:43

Did you pre-order from their dedicated entertaining/food to order section where the food is booked for you and you can't cancel it or did you just put the turkeys in your basket? If the latter it's not their mistake, they've just unfortunately run out.

Bubblty · 22/12/2021 06:47

I don't think Waitrose would sell battery meat would they?

InTheLabyrinth · 22/12/2021 06:47

I'd accept the free range gingerbread turkey, remove the stuffing, and put in the fridge.
By all means go out looking for your preferred turkey, but id keep the waitress ones. You may not find exactly what you are looking for. And if you do, freeze the stuffingless crowns for a later date.
That way, maximum the only thing missing us stuffing, which should be fairly easy to replace.

Bubblty · 22/12/2021 06:47

If the turkeys are the subs then you don't have to accept them?

Barbeasty · 22/12/2021 06:48

Don’t give up hope. It could be that your order was picked before the entertaining delivery got to store.

We had that for a new year’s order a few years ago and the email said our massive pork joint wasn’t available, but when the shopping came they’d added it in for free because it arrived in store late.

sageandbasil · 22/12/2021 06:50

YANBU that sounds revolting

Motnight · 22/12/2021 06:50

You don't have to accept subs, Op. I get your frustration. My Waitrose delivery yesterday had a few subs which I didn't accept as well as missing a few items.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 22/12/2021 06:51

I'd reject and go get the right meat elsewhere.

They sound truly disgusting. As a (badly behaved) guest, I couldn't put meat flavoured with gingerbread and apricot in my mouth.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 22/12/2021 06:51

YANBU I can't stand stuffing at the best of times but gingerbread stuffing. Eurrgghhhh.

lurker69 · 22/12/2021 06:51

That sound revolting i would not serve this to other people.

Moltenpink · 22/12/2021 06:52

I don’t think it sounds that bad. Stuffing always has breadcrumbs, and ginger is a lovely flavour. Calling it gingerbread is definitely a bit off putting though!

Oblomov21 · 22/12/2021 06:54

That is crap. Where are you going to find the same exact bird you ordered. This is poor.

SpidersAreShitheads · 22/12/2021 06:54

I was talking about something similar earlier today.

The supermarkets make a big thing about their festive food pre-order and the early cut off dates. We ordered early, confirmed as in stock - all good. Delivery due tomorrow and now a couple of things are not in stock.

What is the bastard point of a pre-order if at the very last minute they're going to say they're not in stock?!

It isn't a big deal, thankfully not the turkey. But I don't understand how it works - we ordered weeks ago as a confirmed pre-order on the Festive Food section, so why did it go out of stock at the last minute? Surely they know how many people have pre-ordered?? All very confusing.

I hope your minging gingerbread turkey is OK, OP. I thought the same as PP - remove the weird stuffing and replace with regular stuffing.

malificent7 · 22/12/2021 06:55

Yanbu...boak.
I blame the Waitrose collaboration with Heston Blumenthal.

Gretaburley · 22/12/2021 06:56

It’s young pickers with no idea.
I ordered a lamb braised in red wine in summer and they tried to substitute it with curried lamb. On the same order was Yorkshire puds and potatoes.
Unfortunately they have different pickers for different sections.
