The wrong turkey!

Later today my big Christmas grocery shop is being delivered. Central to it are two organic free range turkey crowns (we are expecting a crowd). I've just got an email confirming my shopping has been picked and paid for and was very pleased to see that there were only 2 very minor substitutions...until I looked more closely and discovered that instead of the turkeys I ordered Waitrose are apparently sending me 2 turkey crowns stuffed with gingerbread.

Quite apart from the fact that they sound absolutely revolting I am annoyed that they are presumably battery farmed but cost the same price as the hugely expensive free range birds I so carefully preordered weeks ago.

I've double checked my original order in case I had gone mad and actually ordered these travesties but no, I definitely ordered the nice turkeys so it's definitely Waitrose mistake. Either they have sent me the right turkeys and put the wrong details on the receipt or 2 ginger bread flavoured birds are on their way. I won't know either way until the shopping arrives early this afternoon.

Obviously if it turns out they've sent the wrong thing I'll send them back and get a refund but that means I'll have to venture out to the shops in the pre Christmas hubbub to get a new main event - just what I was trying to avoid. I will be on tenterhooks between now and then!

I realise this is a first world problem. One way or another we will have a lovely dinner even if it ends up being meatfree. It's just annoying that despite being so smug organised and ordering everything weeks in advance the supermarket have thrown such an unexpected spanner in my plans.

YABU - eat the gingerbread flavoured turkeys and stop moaning

YANBU -turkeys should taste of turkey and gravy, with a soupçon of traditional stuffing. Gingerbread is for making little men that run very fast.

Well that was a kerfuffle! It turns out that the turkeys I ordered were the gingerbread ones but it doesn't say when you search for turkeys on the app. It just says "free range bronze turkey crown'. If you then click on it it gives you a detailed breakdown of the stuffing, glaze etc but I didn't do that. I just saw the key words, they sounded perfect so,I added 2 to my basket. It doesn't mention the stuffing and glazes in on the order summaries they email either. If it had ever said Stuffed turkey crown I would have not made such a error.

I had to speak to CS when the van turned up because the driver was reluctant to give such a big refund but they were very understanding and helpful and agreed that it was misleading and I could return them to the driver for a refund. The driver was great too and wanted to ring our local Waitrose to ask them to put two normal turkeys aside for me but it's a tiny branch and the car park is a mare at the best of times so I turned his very kind offer down. The poor man was already running late and should have knocked off an hour earlier. It's not his job to source food for me. Luckily I was his last call of the day.

Anyhow Morrisons isn't far (and has a less stressful car park) and I managed to get just what I wanted there for about 25% less than Waitrose so I was also able to put some bits in their food bank bin with the money saved.

I've been hosting Christmases regularly for 35 years. Every Christmas I try to be organised but every year something goes wrong. I always think that I won't make the same mistake again and I generally don't but there are always new mistakes to be made!

It’s the risk you take ordering from supermarkets. I order from our local butcher (farm shop). They order in local turkeys and make their own sausages and stuffing. Collected it today.
Used to get a free turkey every year from my BIL who worked on a local turkey farm. We saw them maturing throughout the year. He would deliver them in the evening and always joked that it had still been running around that morning.
Might be worth phoning a few local butchers to see if they have any left.

The wrong turkey

New Wallace and Gromit film?

RobbieWeirdicht · 22/12/2021 16:53

@Bubblty

I don't think Waitrose would sell battery meat would they?
Really? Do you naively think that Waitrose is any different to other supermarkets? Wow! Maybe take a wee look on their website and educate yourself because I cannot see anything mentioned regarding turkey welfare - their EU turkey products in particular are very unlikey to be free range.

OP, like other posters have suggested, maybe ditch the stuffing because the turkey crowns themselves look fine.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/12/2021 16:57

I would have kept them personally!

I don’t think it would be too bad

TherapyClient · 22/12/2021 16:59

OP, I accidentally ordered 2 turkeys, free range, so you can have one of mine?

Bippitybopityboo · 22/12/2021 17:03

I voted YANBU
Howevwr clicking the link and seeing the gingerbread turkey id be inclined to take it they look beautiful and i bet it wont taste too 'gingerbready'

MizzFizz · 22/12/2021 17:08

If it's Waitrose I'm sure it will be nice even if it sounds a bit odd. If it's the one pp posted, it's a pork, gingerbread and orange stuffing... Sounds pretty posh to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'd definitely try it!

beenthereboughtthetshirt · 22/12/2021 17:12

Love the Wallace and Gromit title.

Decline. It will taste rank.

Get yourself to Sainsbury's and buy a plain turkey crown.

We had a whole turkey from there last year and it was the first time we had a non-butchers one. It was really nice and unadulterated.

If you pick it up yourself you'll know that you have what you want - no messing about from pickers.

Only Nigella uses gingerbread stuffing. yuk.

ISpyCobraKai · 22/12/2021 17:12

I want to try it now!

Lockheart · 22/12/2021 17:18

Take the stuffing out, remove the butter.

You then have two regular turkey crowns which you can do whatever you want with.

No drama.

Suzanne999 · 22/12/2021 17:30

Can you take the stuffing out? ( lifelong vegetarian here so I’m clueless on turkey/ stuffing)

tobedtoMN · 22/12/2021 17:39

@RobbieWeirdicht if it's not free range then it will be indoor reared. That is very definitely NOT battery, which I think is no longer legal in the UK?
FWIW Waitrose poultry husbandry is some of the best in the industry.

OP - all this and it turns out Waitrose were delivering what you DID order! Good grief.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2021 17:41

I got caught out by waitroses entertaining order system last year with the air dried bacon wrapped sausages, huge fuss about you can’t change this order after the 15th etc and what did I get? Essential range sub instead.

I complained to cs and got a £10 voucher, the first sentence of the email read “ Thank you for bringing this non issue to attention” which made me smile.

Unsure33 · 22/12/2021 17:54

It’s not just gingerbread.it’s sounds lovely .

FitAt50 · 22/12/2021 18:49

"Women angry after getting exactly what she ordered" - I used to work at Waitrose and Christmas was always a nightmare - middle class people are never wrong (in their minds) - Happy Christmas x

LunaLoveFood · 22/12/2021 22:38

Our small turkey crown Was substituted last year for a massive turkey! We were eating turkey forever after Christmas day .

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/12/2021 04:59

So you did actually order the gingerbread stuffed ones? And then changed your username when you updated so that most people missed your update.

That poor delivery driver - I hope you gave him a hefty tip!

Twiglets1 · 23/12/2021 05:55

The situation has been resolved so why are mumsnetters still giving solutions?

How do you know? The OP never posted again after the initial post, did they? Or is there another thread somewhere?
Clymene · 23/12/2021 06:25

She posted again at 16.25. Name change fail

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 23/12/2021 06:35

Seems ridiculous to go to all that trouble when (a) they delivered what you ordered (b) you could just take the stuffing out and (c) it actually sounds really nice.

sashh · 23/12/2021 06:49

I was going to suggest getting rid of the stuffing, but it also has a weird glaze and maple bacon - far too many different flavours.

Bellsandsnow · 23/12/2021 07:06

Ooo if they're the link- they sound incredible!

ThinWomansBrain · 23/12/2021 07:23

I think the name is unfortunate - could be a ginger flavoured stuffing that enhances the turkey.
the person that left a review seems to like it.
