The wrong turkey!

Later today my big Christmas grocery shop is being delivered. Central to it are two organic free range turkey crowns (we are expecting a crowd). I've just got an email confirming my shopping has been picked and paid for and was very pleased to see that there were only 2 very minor substitutions...until I looked more closely and discovered that instead of the turkeys I ordered Waitrose are apparently sending me 2 turkey crowns stuffed with gingerbread.

Quite apart from the fact that they sound absolutely revolting I am annoyed that they are presumably battery farmed but cost the same price as the hugely expensive free range birds I so carefully preordered weeks ago.

I've double checked my original order in case I had gone mad and actually ordered these travesties but no, I definitely ordered the nice turkeys so it's definitely Waitrose mistake. Either they have sent me the right turkeys and put the wrong details on the receipt or 2 ginger bread flavoured birds are on their way. I won't know either way until the shopping arrives early this afternoon.

Obviously if it turns out they've sent the wrong thing I'll send them back and get a refund but that means I'll have to venture out to the shops in the pre Christmas hubbub to get a new main event - just what I was trying to avoid. I will be on tenterhooks between now and then!

I realise this is a first world problem. One way or another we will have a lovely dinner even if it ends up being meatfree. It's just annoying that despite being so smug organised and ordering everything weeks in advance the supermarket have thrown such an unexpected spanner in my plans.

YABU - eat the gingerbread flavoured turkeys and stop moaning

YANBU -turkeys should taste of turkey and gravy, with a soupçon of traditional stuffing. Gingerbread is for making little men that run very fast.

Ew, it's basted in a brandy and ginger butter too.

Decline the substitution.

BadPlaceJanet · 22/12/2021 08:57

My mum made a gingerbread stuffing a few Christmases ago and it was blooming lovely! You might be surprised!

PlanktonsComputerWife · 22/12/2021 09:00

And why would young people have less idea?

Because you only learn a lot of stuff through bitter, bitter experience?

Belindabelle · 22/12/2021 09:00

It’s not basted in anything yet. That little bit of gingerbread man shaped ginger and brandy butter would not baste a sprout never mind a turkey crown. Get rid and replace with lots of lovely salted butter.

Now if you don’t have enough butter in you have a problem and will need to go shopping.

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 22/12/2021 09:00

Gingerbread stuffing sounds disgusting.

rosydreams · 22/12/2021 09:01

this is why i no longer rely on supermarket delivery for cooking events like christmas lol. Always always something missing so it does not matter one way or another i have to leave my warm house to venture into christmas shopping so it may as well be right lol

I have worked along side many youngsters one is not like the other .You get one that's a quick start smart easy to train and another that you think o good lawd how did you get dressed this morning lol

SlowBoiledFrog · 22/12/2021 09:09

@cloudtree

Putting in an online order only guarantees you a delivery slot. It doesn’t guarantee the items are in stock. They didn’t immediately stick your name on two turkeys.
Not at Tesco. Pre ordered actual Christmas stuff is ordered for you then and your name is on the stuff. I made the mistake last year of adding all the lovely preordered stuff to the basket and then found out I couldn't cancel it...
Belindabelle · 22/12/2021 09:09

There is no gingerbread in it.

If it was described as a succulent free range turkey crown served on the bone with a rich pork, ginger and apricot stuffing, basted with a luxurious sea salted butter and topped with air dried smoked bacon lattice, wound you feel better?

Slingsanderrors · 22/12/2021 09:18

Nigella did a gingerbread stuffing years ago, I made it, it was vile!

CPL593H · 22/12/2021 09:20

Nothing against fruity/meaty stuffings (although I prefer something a bit plainer) but that whole dish was devised by someone who really hates turkey. And people.

Hope it's a typo and you get the right one OP.

RandomLondoner · 22/12/2021 09:22

Turkey isn't usually that nice, but I'd make an exception for that one. I think I'd even like the "sticky maple and clementine glaze."

It would be an experience, anyway.

RandomLondoner · 22/12/2021 09:24

but that whole dish was devised by someone who really hates turkey

While I agree with the sentence as you wrote it, I think it could be improved by inserting the word "rightly" before "really".

CPL593H · 22/12/2021 09:31

@RandomLondoner Grin My organic bronze/black hybrid is currently in transit. Given what it cost, I'm expecting it to be delivered in a carriage pulled by unicorns and driven by Prince William.

Apologies to all turkey haters.

RovenderKitt · 22/12/2021 09:33

I made the Nigella gingerbread stuffing a few years back, it was a 50/50 split in our house between lovers and haters. So based on my entirely unscientific survey, I suggest you serve one with the stuffing and one without.

HaveringWavering · 22/12/2021 09:33

@Gretaburley

It’s young pickers with no idea. I ordered a lamb braised in red wine in summer and they tried to substitute it with curried lamb. On the same order was Yorkshire puds and potatoes. Unfortunately they have different pickers for different sections.
Well, even a “young picker” would know that Yorkshire puddings only go with roast beef so to my mind the presence of the Yorkies in the order was proof that the lamb was NOT intended for a roast dinner!
Heckythump1 · 22/12/2021 09:36

Do your own shopping then you won't have this issue....

It says its 'pork, gingerbread and apricot stuffing' probably means its just got a bit of ginger in it, rather than actual gingerbread!

Heckythump1 · 22/12/2021 09:39

No, it'll be the machine telling the picker what to give as an alternative, the picker actually has no say in the alternative, unless the shopper has specifically requested something.
RowsOfHolly · 22/12/2021 09:43

Just accept the delivered crowns (which seem to be free range etc) and fling the gingerbread stuffing to the far side of fuck.

Then cook in your preferred manner.

SpanielsAreMyLife · 22/12/2021 09:46

We pre-ordered from Waitrose, and couldn't change it after the 15th?

I ordered a piece of bone in sirloin that said it fed 6 to 8..... it arrived this morning, and will feed 6 to 8 mice maybe. It's tiny, and was nearly £40. And we're isolating until Christmas Eve.

It is what it is.

thismeansnothing · 22/12/2021 09:46

@Heckythump1 your handset will suggest a handful of subs from all areas of the store. (Providing there are some. Some items it doesnt suggest anything but that's very rare). But as a picker it's only a suggestion, if you know of a better sub you can go against what it suggests. And if theres nothing similar or suitable you can offsale that item.

I've Just come off a ten hour night shift picking and towards the end of the shift I had to offsale stuff as there was nothing appropriate left and none due in on the daytime delivery. As a customer I wouldn't be impressed with braised red cabbage turning up when I ordered a family size cauliflower cheese 🤦‍♀️

SinoohXaenaHide · 22/12/2021 09:48

Accept the substitution, scoop out a spoonful of the stuffing and cook it and give it a taste-test. It might be ok - it might not taste overwhelmingly gingery. You can either tone it down by adding more breadcrumbs and an egg and some other herbs to balance out the ginger, or just scoop out the whole lot and replace with your own. It will be far easier to sort out the stuffing than to source good quality meat at the last minute.

Loudestcat14 · 22/12/2021 10:08

If they are the same weight and also free range, I'd scrape the stuffing out and cook my own separately, rather than go to the faff of shopping for replacements.

edwinbear · 22/12/2021 10:53

Gingerbread is for making little men that run very fast

Grin Grin Exactly this - who on earth came up with the idea of gingerbread flavoured turkey?! There is a reason Waitrose have plenty of those left.......

abigailsnan · 22/12/2021 11:01

Take the stuffing out of the birds and re-stuff them its easy, but it may just be a typing error on their part fingers crossed for you
