Are all rubbish.

Plastic wrappers, waxy chocolate, nice fillings swapped out for more sugar over the years. Huge plastic tubs instead of tins.

AIBU to think Christmas chocolates aren’t what they used to be?

Ive got the Cath Kidston roses tin this year
tin not tub, bound to taste better!

freelions · 21/12/2021 18:41

They are all pretty grim

I'd far rather a small box of decent chocolates than a huge tub of nasty ones

Icecreaminwinter · 21/12/2021 18:42

They’re all rubbish. I’d rather a box of maltesers.

whiteroseredrose · 21/12/2021 18:42

Yes. But compulsive eating over Christmas!

LeuvenMan · 21/12/2021 18:42

I miss Mingles... They were our go to Xmas chocolates Sad

Tealightsandd · 21/12/2021 18:43

I don't know if it's just me getting older. I used to particularly love Quality Street but they just don't seem to taste as nice anymore.

OGenkiDesuKa · 21/12/2021 18:44

Quality street taste overly sweet this year! We like celebrations out of all of them

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 21/12/2021 18:44

I don't mind a bit of cheapish chocolate over Christmas. I don't eat chocolate at any other time. I've bought a box of Milk Tray to open on Christmas Day.

TheRedTowel · 21/12/2021 18:45

I'm very meh about Christmas chocolates. DH gets loads from work so I never buy them myself. The good news is DS2 has decided he likes Snickers, so we will actually finish a tub of celebrations this year.

FionnulaTheCooler · 21/12/2021 18:46

Roses are shit this year, they aren't even different shapes. Celebrations seem the same as normal. Not tried the other two.

ChimChimeny · 21/12/2021 18:47

No chocolate tastes as good as it used to unfortunately. Even the aforementioned Maltesers

WreathSupreme · 21/12/2021 18:49

A Lindt teddy bear or Santa is the only Christmas chocolate I like now.

Our 2yo will eat bountys, so we can now finish a full tub too.

OP yanbu, they get worse every year.

jelly79 · 21/12/2021 18:49

Forerro Rocher are the Xmas chocolates for me

wtfisthatspiderdoing · 21/12/2021 18:49

Slight tangent but I recently had a box of dairy box given to me, thought they'd be awful but they were quite nice! A lot nicer than milk tray / Thorntons.

MintyGreenDream · 21/12/2021 18:51

I wish Galaxy did a tub like roses etc

WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow · 21/12/2021 18:52

No, they’re definitely not what they used to be. Cheap, sickly sweet and usually all taste exactly the same. I miss the days when Roses and Quality Street were proper chocolate. They were much more expensive of course but they really felt like a treat at Christmas.

Comedycook · 21/12/2021 18:53

I'm not mad keen on any of them to be honest. I'll eat them if they're there...Id rather have hotel Chocolat

savagebaggagemaster · 21/12/2021 18:53

Hate them
But I still eat them Sad

mantlepiece · 21/12/2021 18:53

I buy those tubs. But I consider they are for the kids or for young adults that Hoover stuff up so it is not worth giving them the good stuff! Cheap and cheerful chocolate.

Personally I don’t eat them, mainly because I watch my weight, so if I put anything in my mouth it has to be worth the calories. Therefore charbonel et Walker truffles are my Christmas chocolates of choice. Definitely worth the calories!

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 21/12/2021 18:54

Roses have been disgusting for years now and quality street has gone the same way. Heroes and celebrations I’ve never liked. For cheap mixed chocolates the supermarket own brands are superior. Got a very nice box from Waitrose on the go - only £4. Sadly, they’re already unavailable in stores as I found out when I tried to get more at the weekend. Whereas I can have my fill of roses.

cobblers123 · 21/12/2021 18:54

The chocolate on all of them looks like brownish coloured candle wax and tastes like it too.

The Roses and QS of years ago were far superior. Decent tasting chocolate and much better fillings and a large tin, about double the size of those stupid plastic cartons you get them in now.

greenlynx · 21/12/2021 18:56

I don’t like any of those you’ve mentioned. I thought people were buying them just because they’re big boxes, they’re cheap and sweets were individually wrapped so convenient to hand around. I would rather eat basic chocolate bar from Sainsbury’s. However I’m not from UK originally so don’t know how all these chocolates used to taste say 40 years ago.

Twinkleylight · 21/12/2021 18:56

Sainsbury's and M&S equivalent in a tub are much nicer than the traditional Roses, QS, Celebrations and Heroes.

Robostripes · 21/12/2021 18:57

I used to love Roses but now they’ve changed all my old favourites and there’s never very many of the ones I like best (strawberry cremes), the chocolate isn’t very nice anymore either.

I normally buy Heroes as we all like all of them, also have a tub of Quality Street as they were on offer but I’m not mad keen on them tbh.
