Quality Street, Roses, Heroes and Celebrations

Are all rubbish.

Plastic wrappers, waxy chocolate, nice fillings swapped out for more sugar over the years. Huge plastic tubs instead of tins.

AIBU to think Christmas chocolates aren’t what they used to be?

Besides, the aisles really aren’t full of alternatives.

Oblomov21 · 21/12/2021 20:33

None of them taste like they used to. Sad

Billyliarohdear · 21/12/2021 20:40

I don't mind Roses or QS although I admit they're not as nice as the bygone ones of yesteryear. They're traditional and still remind me of my childhood when my grandparents would open the tin and we'd all tuck in.
I'm not a fan of Heroes or Celebrations. If I wanted a twix or a twirl then I'd buy a proper one. Who wants a bite of a Mars bar followed by a Bounty then a teasers? Iyswim

TheCreamCaker · 21/12/2021 20:43

I've bought Quality Street, Roses and Roses this year (we're all greedy gits) but my favourite chocolate ever is Green and Black's

maddiemookins16mum · 21/12/2021 20:52

We use a tin from 1976. It’s battered and worn. But holds nearly 1.5 kilos of wrapped chocs that I buy in boxes from different shops. It’s one of our traditions is the 70s choccie tin.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2021 20:54

Mingles, gone but not forgotten.

RIP, wiv the mint luvin angles now.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2021 20:54

I quite like Heroes. The Crunchie sweets taste better than Crunchie bars,

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2021 20:55

@AutumnAlmanack

I would not eat any of those so called 'chocolates' if you paid me! I hate the word 'tub' too. I would much rather have a small box of really good quality chocolates than any of those. I don't eat chocolate anyway except a few at Christmas.

@BoredZelda

Did I miss the bit where it was the law to buy them?

The aisles are full of alternatives.

Jeez lighten up 🤣
IncessantNameChanger · 21/12/2021 21:00

Yanbu. I'm toying with not buying any this year for the first time ever. I might some for the kids as they might expect some.

Crunchingleaf · 21/12/2021 21:13

It’s a crime what they did to the Roses. Loved them growing up and now they all taste like coffee sweats. The chocolate doesn’t taste like Cadbury chocolate at all. I prefer a small box of proper chocolates now. We had a baby six weeks ago and have received a tubs of them all from people dropping off gifts for the baby. I am now panicking about how to get rid of them.

Bwix · 21/12/2021 21:16

I would pay a tenner for a nice tin of foil-wrapped chocolates. Proper chocolates. Possibly £15 if that’s what it took to make. All chocolates delicious and all packaging recyclable. Ffs why are none of the brands marketing this?

Wish I did hate them, the tub I've opened today is half gone already or maybe they don't fill them enough 🤷‍♀️

FangsForTheMemory · 21/12/2021 21:37

I got liqueur cherries from M&S and a box of assorted Swiss ones also M&S.

Quality Street haven't been right since they dropped the chocolate truffle and the two-stage wrappings.

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/12/2021 21:51

I quite like QS and Roses, not had them for a while though. Is it just recently they’ve been disappointing?

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/12/2021 21:52

I miss liqueur chocolates shaped like bottles that got all sticky and sugary at the top. Can you still get them?

Porfre · 21/12/2021 21:55

I got lindt Santa. It was sickly.

IWanderedLonely · 21/12/2021 21:56

^Late stage capitalism, it's the only way a growth on growth mindset can work.
The shareholders expect constant profit growth and so the way to get this in chocolates is, higher prices, worsening quality through cheapening of the ingredients used, and smaller portions.
Sad! Even Hotel Chocolat seems to be getting worse to me.^

We were given a Hotel Chocolat Advent Calendar as an early Christmas present- foul. I've had nicer cooking chocolate.

I also miss whichever brand did the coffee flavour ones.

malificent7 · 21/12/2021 22:00

Pm me and send me all your unwanted chocolate!

Papergirl1968 · 21/12/2021 22:00

I used to like Mingles. Remember the advert, you can't eat a single Mingle!
I do have to say I haven't noticed the taste of chocolate changing but I don't like the Snickers, Bounty, toffee penny, eclaires or anything with nuts. I do like strawberry creme and orange creme, caramels, and coffee. The little mars bars and milky way are ok but a pain to have to unwrap. Like a ok said, is rather have a full size one.

Papergirl1968 · 21/12/2021 22:01

Like a pp said, I'd rather have a full size one, I meant!

IWanderedLonely · 21/12/2021 22:02

I used to love Neopolitans when I was a child (70s). The wrappers had palm trees on and I very quickly became an expert on which colour was which flavour.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/12/2021 22:03

I think they were always shite TBH, it’s just kids like shite so we have rose tinted glasses.

Lindor is a happy reminder of the old Lindt Christmas chocolates, if that helps any

BreatheAndFocus · 21/12/2021 22:06

Roses are disgustingly vile. Usually, I’ll eat poor chocolates but I just threw the Roses away. Quality Street is the biggest disappointment for me. They were a Christmas tradition in our house but I haven’t bought them for years. I swear some flavours have disappeared or been replaced as well.

Milk Tray and Dairy Milk are horrible too. They all taste the same and there’s far too much caramel-type things. As for Creme Eggs - totally ruined now and inedible.

Why do they do it? I’d rather they had two versions - Traditional for a few more pennies, and Cheap Crap Disguised as Chocolate You Like for less.

Crabapple04 · 21/12/2021 22:13

Totally disgusting all of those, I think as kids you like them and then as I've got older I prefer better quality. I have fond memories of sharing Quality Street at Christmas with cousins and grandparents, but what a let down it is now. This year we've got a Benedick's selection box, been given some choccy scoffy Monty Bojangles. I do love a classic whopping great Toblerone at Christmas thoughGrin.and I know I'm getting one of those as I saw one hidden away and sure it's for me Xmas Grin
