Quality Street, Roses, Heroes and Celebrations

Are all rubbish.

Plastic wrappers, waxy chocolate, nice fillings swapped out for more sugar over the years. Huge plastic tubs instead of tins.

AIBU to think Christmas chocolates aren’t what they used to be?

YANBU, I saw people stacking up on 2 tubs for £6 and wasn't tempted at all.

I can hoover up dozens of Maltesers and blocks of Whole Nut though.

CinnamonEstella · 21/12/2021 18:59

Roses are particularly awful now. Horrible wrappers, cheap chocolate, synthetic fillings that all taste the same. I'd rather eat nothing at all.

I used to love Roses as a child- the blue with red roses foil covered rose shaped strawberry cream, the squat little caramel barrel, the orange cream shaped like an upside down cupcake case. The little bars of dairy milk and bourneville.
They were all so different - yes some were not as good (that scallopped little almond one in the bright blue foil, and the mysterious montelimar always got left at the bottom of the tin in our house), but they were s genuine assortment, instantly recognisable.
With current-day Roses, I'd be unable to identify any of them by sight or by taste!

At least Quality Street still have rustly traditional wrappers, even if they are a shadow of their former selves.

Youdoyoutoday · 21/12/2021 18:59

All milk chocolate has definitely dropped in standards over the years. Thankfully for the size of my arse, I don't eat it very often now and when I do, I'm always disappointed so it never seems worth it.

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 21/12/2021 18:59

We get bought a huge box of Thorntons every year by family. They are awful. And so are the chocolates

CovidPassQuestion · 21/12/2021 19:02

We have toblerone minis, as they're far nicer chocolate.

Evenstar · 21/12/2021 19:16

The Marks and Spencer equivalent are much better and come in a recyclable cardboard tub as well

BoredZelda · 21/12/2021 19:22

Did I miss the bit where it was the law to buy them?

The aisles are full of alternatives.

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 21/12/2021 19:23

I like the cheap lidl seashells!!

prefer those

RedRobyn2021 · 21/12/2021 19:27

I've always thought quality street and roses were horrible, but I really like celebrations! Heroes are alright.

onlyhereforthefood · 21/12/2021 19:33

I miss old school quality street

sonsmum · 21/12/2021 19:34

Yes agree, the quality has gone down considerably and the wrappers add weight to the insult!
We don't bother with those brands now. Almost any other option is preferable!

tiredanddangerous · 21/12/2021 19:37

I was given a tub of roses last week and they're so disappointing. My dear departed DGM used to get a tin every Christmas and they taste nothing like they used to. Even the kids don't want to eat them.

Fanmango · 21/12/2021 19:40

I agree, I suppose to be expected as people expect more for less nowadays.

Caspianberg · 21/12/2021 19:41

M and s mint thins are way nicer than after eights as well. Much nicer chocolate, and you can get in milk, white or dark

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 21/12/2021 19:42

Are they still available? The nice supermarket versions seem to be on sale for a really short window only for some reason. I wanted to get some M&S Belgian truffles for Xmas yesterday and nothing. Whereas they were stacking them high weeks ago.
AutumnAlmanack · 21/12/2021 19:42

I would not eat any of those so called 'chocolates' if you paid me! I hate the word 'tub' too. I would much rather have a small box of really good quality chocolates than any of those. I don't eat chocolate anyway except a few at Christmas.

alphabetsoup1980 · 21/12/2021 19:45

Oh how I miss the Brazil Nut toffee one!! Not sure if roses or quality street.

TurquoiseBaubles · 21/12/2021 19:47

I don't actually mind heroes too much but I'm shocked and horrified by the tin of celebrations we opened yesterday. It had 17 snickers and 21 bounty. and a shit load of milky way but only 8 Maltesers and 6 galaxy caramel. Since none of us like nuts (or coconut) it was a bit of a let down.

I like the tubs though - my garden shed currently has tubs of everything from dahlia roots to golf balls!

Neron · 21/12/2021 19:54

I wish Galaxy did a tub like roses etc
Agree. It'd turn me in to a diabetic though

Andoffwego · 21/12/2021 19:58

Roses are particularly disgusting now which is a shame as they were absolutely delicious until about 10 years ago. They were cheap chocolates but I’d have taken a box of them over expensive chocolates any day because I liked them so much. Now they taste of off lard and are a horrible texture. QS were never as nice as Roses and still taste more similar to the way they used to but they’re not quite the same. Heroes have always been vile. Celebrations are quite nice but they don’t count as Christmas chocolates to me.

The M&S version are very nice - I’d recommend those. A fiver for a really big box.

I used to love QS, but no longer. Roses have been a complete disappointment ever since they made them all the same cushion shape - too much disgusting cho plate, not enough filling. I've never liked Celebrations or Heroes. These days we order a pi k and mix selection from Lindt and have that. A bit more expensive, but nothing gets wasted as we can choose the flavours we like.

glittereyelash · 21/12/2021 20:17

Ugh I miss the original tin of roses so much. Also selection boxes are crap now. I love doing Christmas eve boxes though I'm enjoying that as a new tradition ☺️

hivemindneeded · 21/12/2021 20:21

Cheap chocolates are a waste of weight gain. If you are going to put on a pound or two over Christmas, let Lindt Lindor or Godiva help you.
