Are all rubbish.

Plastic wrappers, waxy chocolate, nice fillings swapped out for more sugar over the years. Huge plastic tubs instead of tins.

AIBU to think Christmas chocolates aren’t what they used to be?

YANBU. Life is too short to buy shit chocolate. If I'm going to eat sugary unhealthy stuff, it needs to be worth it. And it's not as if you have to pay much for decent chocolate anyway - Aldi Moser Roth is a million times better than those horrible waxy things!

PAFMO · 21/12/2021 22:16

@IWanderedLonely

I used to love Neopolitans when I was a child (70s). The wrappers had palm trees on and I very quickly became an expert on which colour was which flavour.
Terry's Neapolitans. Fabulous. Every Christmas I'd get a box of them (orange one being favourite) and a Terry's Chocolate Orange.

I still buy QS and Roses. More for nostalgia than anything else. Usually get a 2kg tin from Amazon but couldn't get one shipped this year so have tubs instead to be decanted into one of the empty 2kg tins.

mogsrus · 21/12/2021 22:19

All horrible cheap chocs, never buy them

Valaris · 21/12/2021 22:21

I will continue to refuse to buy celebrations until they bring back the galaxy truffle.

Deadringer · 21/12/2021 22:23

They are all shit but i eat them anyway, except ferrero roche, i hate them. I used to love lindor but even they aren't as nice as they used to be.

peaceanddove · 21/12/2021 22:29

Tins, real metal tins of Quality Street used to be expensive, and only available at Xmas too. And the tins were big & deep. You could sink your hand in to one, up way past your wrist. The chocolates were double wrapped and when you untwisted one the wrapper used to squeak.

Ellieboolou33 · 21/12/2021 22:31

@bendmeoverbackwards yes! I've got them, Waitrose sell them they are called famous names, I brought a box for my aunt but ended up eating them all and need to replace 🤣

As for roses UNquaility street and hero's they are all vile but my husband buys them every bloody year and I still eat them

PinkArt · 21/12/2021 22:34

Oh wow I'd forgotten all about Mingles and now all I can think about is how much I want a box of them!

FictionalCharacter · 21/12/2021 22:38

Oh for the days of Macintosh chocolate!

PurpleSproutingSomething · 21/12/2021 22:40

Heroes in our house, as they're the only ones without nuts, I have a serious nut allergy.

But gone off them massively. I have thoroughly enjoyed my Lindt advent calendar though Xmas Grin

BurntO · 21/12/2021 22:41

YANBU. Not how I remember them 15 years ago. I bought quality street this year but so tasteless and waxy. Nostalgia won’t allow me to not buy any but it’s so disappointing

BoredZelda · 21/12/2021 22:43

Did I miss the bit where it was the law for you to come onto threads and piss on everyone’s chips?

Did I miss the bit where it was the law for you to respond with this kind of stupidity?

justasking111 · 21/12/2021 22:48

I bought a personalized quality street tin. Just buy a selection of whatever family like and put them in the tin

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 21/12/2021 22:50

I still like Quality Street but agree that Roses and Heroes are vile now.

Winniewonka · 21/12/2021 22:50

Was it Neapolitans that used to have coffee as one of the flavours? if so, I used to love those in the 70s. Nobody seems to make coffee flavoured chocolates anymore.

Maskless · 21/12/2021 23:03

Better to buy Fox's cholate covered biscuit assortment. They come in a really nice re-usable tin.

Maskless · 21/12/2021 23:03

*chocolate

THIS is what I want from my Christmas chocolates. (Well, this and for them to taste how they used to taste). The wrappers made them look like jewels in the tin which was ALL PART OF IT. I get so disproportionately angry about how they’ve fucked up Quality Street and Roses every year.
tearinghairout · 21/12/2021 23:19

Agree with the pp that Aldi chocolates are the best. According to FIL they are made by Lindt.

AmberLynn1536 · 21/12/2021 23:25

So called luxury biscuits have gone the same way, I went to Sainsbury yesterday to get some tins of biscuits as presents, there was only one brand that were actually in a tin, the rest were just in a cardboard box, it hardly screams decedent luxury, only a couple of years ago you could get shortbread in tins as well, now just more cardboard.

VestaTilley · 21/12/2021 23:33

YANBU, they’ve all been downgraded over the years. Cadbury’s inevitably went downhill after Kraft took over.

You can at least get proper tins now though; the big supermarkets stock them.

Mocha (dark) and Cafe-au-lait (milk)

Terry's Neapolitans were really nice back in 1982

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 21/12/2021 23:43

I agree. Far too sweet and not as nice as I remember. I wonder if our palletes have changed though. Didn't grow up with anything other than 50% cocoa dark choc. Maybe they were always oversweet and we just hadn't tried any better!

stayathomer · 21/12/2021 23:49

Love celebrations and heroes. They are Christmas to me, feel free to pass any tubs this wayGrin

Friendviv1987 · 21/12/2021 23:51

I would get cheaper chocolates but my adult sons would make such a fuss…CBA to go cheaper!
