To think periods are a terrible design flaw in the human race

Humans are quite remarkably cleverly designed creatures. Binocular vision, opposable thumbs, walking upright - we’ve got it all going on. But honestly, who came up with periods?

AIBU to think this is a massive design fault and someone needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with something better?

YANBU

It's how I know humans weren't designed by a kind overlord.

If there is a god, he's cruel.

Lavender24 · 17/12/2021 14:31

I don't think we're that well designed tbh - a large number of us can't even give birth without medical assistance. I actually don't mind periods now I'm older and they're more regular and less painful - at least it lets me know I'm not pregnant! It would be better if they only lasted 1-2 days though.

Aposterhasnoname · 17/12/2021 14:31

I agree. What possible evolutionary advantage is there for leaving a bloody trail for predators to follow, while simultaneously being in pain and lethargic so less able to run away/fight.
It’s not even like it’s some sort of signal that you’re fertile. The very opposite in fact.

user1492771818 · 17/12/2021 14:33

Animals that have periods tend to have a lower rate of miscarriage.

Feetupteashot · 17/12/2021 14:34

Better than laying an egg tho

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 17/12/2021 14:34

Shall we talk about evolution not having caught up with the fact that we don't need unsightly hair all over our bodies? Waxing HURTS!!!

SickAndTiredAgain · 17/12/2021 14:35

I’d add morning sickness to that - apparently other animals don’t show signs of vomiting or food aversions when pregnant.

CrumpledCrumpet · 17/12/2021 14:36

I mean if it’s strictly necessary that we need to shed our womb linings once a month (and as I don’t need to regularly shed any other part of my internal anatomy, I dispute this), could it at least be bundled up into a neat package like an owl pellet that we could just shoot out of our vaginas and then be done with it?

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 17/12/2021 14:37

I agree actually. I do think in the future though we will wipe out periods with medication but still ovulate.

Shiningpath · 17/12/2021 14:37

Waxing HURTS!!!

Waxing is entirely optional.

Would rather lay an egg. Leave it to DH to look after rather than crippling pelvic pain and having to either tell or conceal from work at the first sign of sickness/bloating.
NuffSaidSam · 17/12/2021 14:40

The whole female reproductive system is a disgrace.

Yes the entire female reproductive system needs a serious rethink IMO.

Get the team who worked on eyes on the case. Eyes are pretty good - quite a high rate of malfunction but the basic design concept is solid.

Then we have the delights of menopause to contend with FFS

luverlybubberly · 17/12/2021 14:45

I agree. Add backs to that list too. So many people with back issues...

Spaghettio · 17/12/2021 14:45

Can I add babies suffering with teething to the pile of stupid evolution?

Poor things, being completely unable to express what's wrong, then being put through all that pain for teeth. Can't they just wake up one day and they're there?

This is what I think too. It’s periods that make me not believe in a god more than of the other awful shit in the world

JuergenSchwarzwald · 17/12/2021 14:48

@NuffSaidSam

The whole female reproductive system is a disgrace.
I totally agree. We need a zip that we undo to give birth (and so doctors can see inside generally without having to wield a scapel to do surgery) and we need to be able to control menstrual flow like we can urine and faeces.

I could live with being a marsupial, too (not sure if they have periods?)

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/12/2021 14:48

To be fair, teeth would be totally fine if we didn’t eat sugar

Hemingwayscatz · 17/12/2021 14:49

Wisdom teeth as well. I have to have two surgically removed because they’re hidden underneath the bone but keep getting infected. Great. Totally pointless extra molars that just seem to cause hassle and pain.

Totally agree with your argument. They can do one!

But to the PP who said we don't shed anything else, I give you skin, hair and (if you're a runner) toenails...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/12/2021 14:54

As well as the reproductive system (male as well as female -- all that vulnerable stuff on the outside? Argh) there are toenails and fingernails, teeth, the knee-joint and the elbow-joint, the sinus system, the weirdness of the throat with air and food getting potentially mixed and ending up in the wrong place....

There are many reasons for me to say "What on earth do you mean, intelligent design?" to people who don't think the mess is because of evolutionary side-alleys.

Well isn’t that delightful. Maybe explains the morning sickness as well.
