To think periods are a terrible design flaw in the human race

Humans are quite remarkably cleverly designed creatures. Binocular vision, opposable thumbs, walking upright - we’ve got it all going on. But honestly, who came up with periods?

AIBU to think this is a massive design fault and someone needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with something better?

I think the human race itself is a terrible design flaw.

Bah humbug.
Enjoy this horrifying article!

www.tickld.com/wow/1912350/wefthe-real-reason-women-have-periods/
I'm no scientist or medic, but that article on its own seems to suggest that those people currently trying to find ways of transplanting wombs into males are wasting their time entirely.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/12/2021 14:58

It does seem to, doesn't it.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 18/12/2021 17:55

@CrumpledCrumpet

I mean if it’s strictly necessary that we need to shed our womb linings once a month (and as I don’t need to regularly shed any other part of my internal anatomy, I dispute this), could it at least be bundled up into a neat package like an owl pellet that we could just shoot out of our vaginas and then be done with it?
Or a button you can press where the entire womb lining empties out in one go, a bit like going for a wee or a poo.
sjxoxo · 18/12/2021 17:59

Agree!!! I’m expecting first baby and my moods have never been so stable in all my life!! I didn’t have bad or heavy periods but they are so disruptive to daily life 🤨 I’m looking forward to big carrying round a heavy baby but not to my periods returning!!! X

MoonRiverLaLaLa · 18/12/2021 18:59

@Mufasa1118 how many times in this thread have you repeated that you enjoy your periods? Grin 20? We got it.
I remember from another thread that you also enjoy shitting GrinGrinGrin What's up with you and fixation on body functions?

Fomofo · 18/12/2021 20:06

Menstrual taboos in religions and cultures are appalling

JuergenSchwarzwald · 23/12/2021 17:57

I imagine there were lots of women in the past who did not get pregnant, whether it was because they were "spinsters" or nuns or just couldn't have kids. So they definitely did have periods and lots of them, if they were well enough nourished - Mufasa makes a good point there.

Doesn't mean I like leaking in bed though Envy not envy

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/12/2021 18:05

I am badly designed to the point of self destruction at the moment. Losing half a pint of blood a day (despite txa and norethisterone) and my urgent ablation cancelled. I feel like I am just going to lie here and quietly get weaker and weaker. I think the fatal flaw isn’t just my body though, it’s the way it interfaces with the NHS.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 23/12/2021 18:09

@StormyCornishSeas

I agree and think about this every month. I just think it proves the fact that if there is a God he's a man.
Definitely designed by a man 🤬

To the women who hate having periods, did you ever think about taking the pill back to back, and stopping your periods altogether?

I actually thought about doing this once. I read online how we can stop our periods by taking the pill back to back.

I ordered the pill online, but when I got them in the post , I just couldn't take them. ?wasn't having sex so this would have purely been to stop periods). It felt like something primal stopped me, that my body felt that it would be really un-natural to do this, to not bleed. So I never tried it. Has anyone else done it?1

wonderstuff · 23/12/2021 19:40

@Mufasa1118 the pill gives me awful depression, just horrible have tried a couple different ones with the same effect, definitely rather have periods than that, I’m definitely not alone, I’ve heard accounts from women miserable for years and only realising it’s the pill when they stop taking it for whatever reason. When I first told my GP I thought it was affecting my mood she completely dismissed the connection, I was unhappy for months before my mum recommended I took a break and I felt so much better.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/12/2021 20:03

The pill gives me awful mood swings as well as migraines. I have avoided it since I was 19 and am only on it now because it’s less bad than the alternative and only meant to be for a couple of weeks.
Even without that though I would have been uncomfortable messing with my biology to the extent of stopping periods altogether.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/12/2021 20:04

Stopping periods is what it’s meant to be doing for me now only it’s not working!

I can't go in the pill because of my medication & health conditions

I do take my pill b2b and haven't had period in years! I don't miss them at all.
Firefightress1 · 24/12/2021 00:47

I've been on Depo for years so I've actually forgotten how bad my periods were. I suffered terribly and i started at 10. There are options although they aren't for everyone.

Sorka · 24/12/2021 01:52

When I went through IVF I really wished we could just grow the foetus in a test tube or a big pot until it’s grown to term then come and collect. Scientists could make a healthy environment to grow the baby and the mother wouldn’t have to go through the physical strains and sometimes trauma of pregnancy and childbirth.

I could really do without periods. They constantly get worse. I now have week long periods and a three week cycle so I’m on my period 1 day in 3 😩

Mouseonmychair · 24/12/2021 01:56

It only affects half the population are we suggesting men were designed better?

Sorka · 24/12/2021 02:50

They don’t have periods, can have children pretty much no matter hold old they are and can pee standing up, which must be better than always having to queue in the ladies. They definitely got the better deal.
OhGiveUp · 24/12/2021 04:07

If I had invented women then their menstrual cycle would have been....
Start at 20, finish at 30 with one period per year, which would last two days, be light enough for nothing more than a panty pad, would be totally pain free and would release an endorphin which made women feel on top of the world.
Menopause would be unheard of as they would stop as fast as they started.
Labour would consist of pain no worse than knocking your elbow on something and would last around two hours, finished by one long push, with everything opening up appropriately so baby just slides out effortlessly.
Then our figures would snap straight back into shape before we'd had a chance to finish our tea and toast.
But oh no, we leave a bloke in charge who as usual, managed to royally fuck it up.

TimeIhadaSeasonalNameChange · 24/12/2021 07:32

I think rabbits have it right. They don't release an egg unless they have sex, hence no regular period. Great!

ShippingNews · 24/12/2021 07:34

The entire reproductive system is a design flaw. Terrible.

Same with kangaroos. When the group needs more babies born, the females ovulate. When the group gets too large for the available food, the females stop ovulating. Neat ! Ovulation on demand.
HeronLanyon · 24/12/2021 07:38

Agree. And may I add teeth (which decay/break/pain/impact etc) to the list also.
