Is Panettone the biggest waste of money

Every Christmas, stores have the most gorgeously packaged panettone, it feels impossible not to buy at least one. And the big ones don't come cheap. My gripe is that you open it and it's nothing but eggy, vanilla flavoured fruit bread in the shape of a cake. I've used it to make French toast and it's fine, but nothing you couldn't do with a simple fruit loaf from Tesco or M&S. Panettone - a rip-off or worth it?

I miss living in Italy. 😭😭

And yes, technically it’s a bread.

repottingthescabious · 13/12/2021 15:09

it just gave me an achey arm for 24hours but no other effects.

iwantadogdhdoesnt · 13/12/2021 15:09

Awful.

LaBellina · 13/12/2021 15:09

@EverNapping

A good panettone, this year Sainsbury's & the big tinned ones in Wilko, are to die for. I adore them. I want to walk into the store and sweep them into my basket. They also have a long shelf life in Wilko so you can keep them well into 2022.
Agree! We've got one of the tinned ones from Wilko and it's astonishingly good and fantastic value for money. I adore panettone and won't have a word said against it!

Was that from buying the biggest panettone there is and carrying it home? Grin

Either that, or wrong thread Grin

@Capricopia

Only worth it for turning into a chocolate orange bread and butter pudding. Slather slices in marmalade, stack them in a casserole dish, slot chunks of dark chocolate between slices, cover is custard and bake. Absolutely delicious.
Yes, the jamie oliver recipe for this is to die for

The packaging and idea looks nice but i can't get on with Panettone. I suppose like everything there will be good ones and not so good.

Te bread is too yellow for me.

It does disturb me.

SignOnTheWindow · 13/12/2021 15:24

Please pass your unwanted panettone gifts to me. I love it in all its forms, including the crap supermarket versions.

ThackeryBinks · 13/12/2021 15:24

Toasted pannetone for Christmas breakfast!

SherbertLemons · 13/12/2021 16:00

Best by part of Christmas! Well not quite but not far off. I love the stuff. Big slab of it with butter on Xmas morning with coffee. But I am half Italian. Both my dad and I love it!

wildcheesesteak · 13/12/2021 16:23

I had no idea so many people don't like it! Feeling a bit sorry for DS's TA who will be receiving one for Christmas, too late to change it now though Grin

I bloody love it, my favourite is chocolate but I'm not fussy, toasted with butter.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 13/12/2021 16:26

Anyone who has one to pass on, pass it to me please.

I love it. It shouldn't taste eggy either, there was something wrong with that one. I hate eggy things and I love pannetone.

BrendaDraper · 13/12/2021 16:30

YABVU, the ones you buy here in the supermarket are awful, the really nice ones are gorgeous. My italian nanna always used to bring a few over when she'd been to Italy and it was a real treat, I love it because you couldn't really get then here so much back then.

tallduckandhandsome · 13/12/2021 16:35

Another one who is only tempted to buy the Panettone for the packaging, and usually only when it's half price in the Waitrose sale!

I like this tin from Wilkos this year, it looks like something out of American Christmas movies, where the prodigal daughter returns for Christmas and family secrets are revealed, with tins of hams and panettone sitting on the dining room table or kitchen counter.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 13/12/2021 16:37

I prefer it to mince pies. In fact I'm not even going to bother with mince pies this year.

Lulu1919 · 13/12/2021 16:39

We toast ours or use it to make a bread and butter pudding !

Rainbowshit · 13/12/2021 16:41

I've always been disappointed but love the packaging. I guess I've never had a good one. Can anyone recommend one for me to try that is actually good?

Oriunda · 13/12/2021 16:50

Unless bought from an Italian deli, the ones you get over here aren’t the best. The basic ones cost around €3 in Italian supermarkets, but the fancier ones come with figs or pistachi in them.

Top tip is to warm it up by placing on a radiator before serving - that’s what we do it Italy.

I think that's true. We have builders in at the moment, from Turin and Naples, and they're baffled that the crappier types of panettone dominate in the shops here.
FoggySpecs · 13/12/2021 17:14

I once helped at an old people's home and another Italian volunteer bought in some panettone for the residents, I overheard two old ladies discussing how that cake was awfully stale Xmas Grin

MondayYogurt · 13/12/2021 17:17

Souschef has the only decent ones, but Selfridges is also good. They need to have a bit of moisture IMO and generous fruit.
Cheap panettone isn't worth it.
