Is Panettone the biggest waste of money

Every Christmas, stores have the most gorgeously packaged panettone, it feels impossible not to buy at least one. And the big ones don't come cheap. My gripe is that you open it and it's nothing but eggy, vanilla flavoured fruit bread in the shape of a cake. I've used it to make French toast and it's fine, but nothing you couldn't do with a simple fruit loaf from Tesco or M&S. Panettone - a rip-off or worth it?

@User2638483

The Lidl ones are lovely and not ££££
I bought a Lidl one yesterday to try and it was really nice. It was toasted with proper French salted butter though 😬

@mynameiscalypso

I'm a heathen and I love the M&S triple chocolate one.
I've bought a Waitrose tiramisu one, more out of curiosity than anything.

I like them, but for those who don't and are lumbered with one, they are fantastic to use in a bread and butter pudding.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 13/12/2021 11:44

As great as their food is the Italians just can't do cake.

TuftyMarmoset · 13/12/2021 11:48

It makes lush bread and butter pudding 😋

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 13/12/2021 11:49

They're horrible and so over-hyped. Very dry bit of old sponge, yuk.

SherBear1971 · 13/12/2021 11:50

I only buy them when they are reduced after Christmas, to make bread and butter pudding

CrimbleCrumble1 · 13/12/2021 11:51

I don’t like them.

Sunsetsupernova · 13/12/2021 11:52

We have an Italian client who gifts us one every year. And every year we regift it to my parents. I much prefer a Pandoro to be honest

mamakoukla · 13/12/2021 11:52

Mmmmone of my favourite Christmas traditions! Sorry but have to disagree on this. Not too sweet, lightly flavoured, not heavy, definite specific texture. Love panettone

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 13/12/2021 11:53

You are being unreasonable beyond the wildest unreasonability.

Panettone is the best thing ever. Ever.

Nevertime · 13/12/2021 11:54

I've only ever bought one when it was vastly reduced after Christmas. Nothing about it made me think I needed another.

Cakepig · 13/12/2021 11:55

I wish someone would pass them on to me, love them!

Elphame · 13/12/2021 11:55

They do make a very good bread and butter pudding which is what I do with them if I'm unlucky enough to be given one.

Otherwise the birds like them

Iamclearlyamug · 13/12/2021 11:55

YABVU, panettone is the food of the gods 😍😍 if anyone has any they don’t want, please post it to meeee 😂😂 by new year I won’t fit out the door of my house but 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ It’d be worth it!

MeatyRvita · 13/12/2021 11:55

I must have never had a good one as I can’t stand the stuff!
It’s just like stale eggy fruity bread/cake, to be fair I don’t like similar things like fruit loaf, toasted tea cakes or malt loaf so I’m probably not going to like it.

RaisedByPangolins · 13/12/2021 11:56

I buy them mainly for the tins tbh - all my Xmas decorations are stored in various beautiful pannetone tins. This year I got one in a cardboard container and it just didn’t have the pizazz so I realised it’s not about the product at all, it’s all about the packaging - bit like an Easter egg I suppose, the chocolate is just overpriced normal chocolate but the shape and the pretty box are what make it special.

Thinking2041 · 13/12/2021 12:01

You need ones with delicious bits of hazlenutty chocolate.
It’s delicious!

Nowayoutonlydown · 13/12/2021 12:02

Um I really like pannetone. Anyone tried today black forest one in the waitrose Heston range? Considering it,but it's expensive! Hoping someone who's here to say that pannetone is food of tge gods will have some experience of the waitrose one!

Sorry for derailing!

waterproofed · 13/12/2021 12:02

I absolutely love Panettone and its plain cousin Pandoro. They are amazing. We eat them throughout December but I’m delighted not everyone feels this way - it’s hard enough finding our favourite brands as it is, I don’t need any more competition Xmas Wink

Hankunamatata · 13/12/2021 12:02

Iv never had one. Now stollen another German christmas treats 🥰

Rainbows89 · 13/12/2021 12:03

I love panettone!

Also love it in bread and butter pudding!

shouldistop · 13/12/2021 12:03

You need to have it with mascarpone

girasol · 13/12/2021 12:04

I don't like the fruit ones but the cheapo chocolate one from Wilko is divine! And at that price I have no hesitation about making bread and butter pudding with it. The M&S chocolate one is also very good but £10, and I wouldn't ever spend more than that.

StandByYourTesselators · 13/12/2021 12:05

We love them in our house. £3.50 for a big one in Wilkos! We've bought posh expensive ones from the deli before as a treat, but they're never as good as Wilkos. There's regular ones and chocolate ones, perfect with a cuppa. Thank you Italy ❤️

Snowisfallinghere · 13/12/2021 12:06

I love it. The first couple of times I had it, in my early 20s, I was like "what's the point, this is just bread..." but then after not having it for a while, I found myself craving it, and now I have developed a real appreciation for it. I think it helps if you view it more like a really special gourmet bread, rather than a disappointing cake!
