Is Panettone the biggest waste of money

Every Christmas, stores have the most gorgeously packaged panettone, it feels impossible not to buy at least one. And the big ones don't come cheap. My gripe is that you open it and it's nothing but eggy, vanilla flavoured fruit bread in the shape of a cake. I've used it to make French toast and it's fine, but nothing you couldn't do with a simple fruit loaf from Tesco or M&S. Panettone - a rip-off or worth it?

This is my gripe too! It’s everywhere and it’s just so…. Meh? Like stale old cake. I don’t understand it at all. I’m not from the northern hemisphere and have very much got behind all the other foods (mince pie addicting) but I cannot fathom panettone.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

I looked into making them and decided to leave it to the experts. It takes a lot of faffing and waiting for it to prove etc. Also the cases are really expensive and you can only buy them in large quantities.

Then once you have got past all of that you have to stab them with long kebab skewers so you can hang them upside down so they don't deflate.

Once you see the work that goes into them, you can see why they are expensive.

@HarlanPepper

This thread reminded me I want to make stollen this Christmas, and according to some recipes I might already have left it a bit late - it needs to mature for two weeks! Better get cracking.
We are just finishing Nigel Slater's recipe that I made last Sunday and absolutely bloody gorgeous though it's been (and the size of a toddler) I wouldn't advise leaving it for two weeks. The bit I've got left is 9 days old and definitely turning biscuity and needs finishing. Don't know if it depends on ingredients though.

it isn't a rip off for 1000s of Italians! But I see your point; similarly, people will pay way over the top for 'gift boxess' of sweets, tioletries etc, which would be half the price if bought separately
Pottedpalm · 14/12/2021 07:11

I have never bought one as it would be one more food item hanging around that no one wanted to eat. Yule log Christmas cake, trifle, mince pies… too much

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 14/12/2021 08:16

👋 to @Geamhradh 🎄🎄🎄 I keep meaning to pop back on to the Chronicles thread! How are you all keeping?

We (husband and I) have eaten a whole panettone over the past 5-6 days, we have a slice every morning with our coffee. Last two slices had today! That’s enough for us...wouldn’t want to be greedy 😉

Surely people buy the stuff that they like and do want to eat? We buy a panettone as we like it, and want to eat it. I’m the only one in the house who likes mince pies so we don’t buy any for the house, I will probably have one while out at a cafe or something. Never had a Yule log or a trifle at Christmas. Seems weird that people would buy a load of stuff that no one wants?

Xmas Grin I haven't been on for a few days either. But we did finish off the apricot booze in one go on Sunday and it went down so well I've put another load on! I'm about to sit down and have a lump of cheap (Balocco) panettone and a cup of Nescafé (don't tell my neighbours, family or father of my child) before schlepping off back to school. Xmas Grin
EsmaCannonball · 14/12/2021 10:57

I love panettone. I like going in Waitrose after Christmas and getting all the different-flavoured ones cheap. It does feel like you are paying more for a pretty box than for the actual product though. Somewhere should start selling them without all the packaging.

Shedmistress · 14/12/2021 14:20

I bought my Christmas Pannetone today.

Mix56 · 14/12/2021 14:21

Lidl did a Limone one last year. :o)
brioche with lemon curd !!

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 14/12/2021 22:05

@MsRinky I had one of those last year - divine! This year I'm trying the pistachio and the hazelnut with manna cream

MondayYogurt · 15/12/2021 11:38

Looks like panettone shortage!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 15/12/2021 11:56

Really?

There are mountains of panettone wherever you care to look.

Someone is being dramatic.

DiamondBright · 15/12/2021 12:04

@EverNapping

A good panettone, this year Sainsbury's & the big tinned ones in Wilko, are to die for. I adore them. I want to walk into the store and sweep them into my basket. They also have a long shelf life in Wilko so you can keep them well into 2022.
I'm so happy to hear that, I have two of the Wilkos ones and they smell amazing but I haven't eaten any yet.

I'm planning panettone french toast Nutella sandwiches on Christmas morning.

JovialNickname · 15/12/2021 12:08

I don't get it either, last year my Italian friend gave me a beautifully wrapped, expensive looking panettone and I was really excited to try it, as I'd never had one before. It was horrible, like stale cake, I threw most of it away.

It's a joke.
Jarstastic · 15/12/2021 12:32

I’m not that keen on them but the children love one from Carluccios. They get at least 2 over the season.

casinoroyale4ever · 15/12/2021 12:48

Oh I love it. Not bothered about a shortage, stocked up in November!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 15/12/2021 13:06

It’s the Twitter person who is being a drama queen, not sure if they are joking.

Anyway, I’m probably responsible for some shortages because I have at least three stashed away.

casinoroyale4ever · 15/12/2021 18:28

3? Ahem, I have a few more. My winter lockdown panettone prepping has been impressive.

SunshineCake1 · 16/12/2021 17:24

I bought a Pandoro in Aldi today. It's massive!

SC10 · 16/12/2021 17:37

I have just bought one from Wilko after reading this thread, are you able to freeze it?

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 16/12/2021 17:46

@Geamhradh sorry for tardy reply!

Haha Nescafé Xmas Grin

We’ve decided we should probably get one more...I think I’d like pistachio this time.

Shodan · 16/12/2021 17:58

I bought my first ever panettone this year.

From Wilko, because I love the tins so I thought even if the panettone was bleugh, I'd still have the tin.

But it's scrumptious! I can't believe I've missing out all these years (and all those tins, too)

The only thing is, I ate two slices (cut vertically), toasted, with butter, and felt a bit sick afterwards. Which serves me right really, for being a greedy guts.
