Is Panettone the biggest waste of money

Every Christmas, stores have the most gorgeously packaged panettone, it feels impossible not to buy at least one. And the big ones don't come cheap. My gripe is that you open it and it's nothing but eggy, vanilla flavoured fruit bread in the shape of a cake. I've used it to make French toast and it's fine, but nothing you couldn't do with a simple fruit loaf from Tesco or M&S. Panettone - a rip-off or worth it?

@repottingthescabious

it just gave me an achey arm for 24hours but no other effects.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
TroysMammy · 13/12/2021 18:17

@limitedperiodonly are you always this nasty or has someone pissed on your chips?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/12/2021 18:40

@LaBellina

Go for a stollen instead, with some quality butter - much better in my opinion!
Or both….. Xmas Grin

@Cornettocat - do you think panettone is something that a home baker could make? It’s something I’ve thought about having a go at. And if so, can you recommend a recipe, please?

repottingthescabious · 13/12/2021 19:41

@PupInAPram

Grin no wonder the booster rollout is taking so long.

EmpressCixi · 13/12/2021 19:45

YABVU,
I love a panettone. I always buy the ones made in Italy. Of course Brexit has made the price go up this year but I’ll just eat fewer of them.

I agree with the pps who say OP has probably never bought a good one. It’s shameful waste to dump it in egg and make French toast with it.

SunshineCake1 · 13/12/2021 20:01

Still sulking over not seeing panettone in a tin.

I bought stollen for the first time today.

Just the 7 rather than the usual 12!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/12/2021 20:08

@ShirleyPhallus

I think it’s delicious and could eat one in one sitting
Me too! Bloody love it!
Geamhradh · 13/12/2021 20:09

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius (lovely to see you btw, haven't seen you for ages, or limitedperiodonly- makes me all nostalgic) we were watching the Sunday lunchtime news yesterday (am in Italy) and the foodie bit was about panettone, with the woman panettone maker saying nobody should EVER attempt to make one at home because we are just incapable and the wrath of all the dead panettone makers from history will fall upon us. Xmas Confused

MondayYogurt · 13/12/2021 20:11

This is a good traditional one IMO www.selfridges.com/GB/en/cat/selfridges-selection-italian-traditional-panettone-1kg_R03756000/?fi=wp

Davros · 13/12/2021 20:16

I don't like dried fruit so it ain't for me but I do like a Pan D'Oro

Classica · 13/12/2021 20:21

Right now on Channel 4 Jamie Oliver of faffing around with panettone, covering it in jam and ice-cream and turning it into some kind of sponge pudding.

The nonnas will be ragin'

HeronLanyon · 13/12/2021 20:29

He hasn’t called it ‘this bad boy’ has he. I swear if I hear one more male chef use that stupid pointless posturing phrase I’ll - hmmm - not sure - but it makes me switch off !

We're already on the third one. Mostly me, actually.
BigHuff · 13/12/2021 20:52

If it's good it's great. Panettone should be moist and fluffy and you should be able to tear it. Yum.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/12/2021 20:58

My boys love the mini ones from Lidl. If I get one from the Italian shop in town it's really delicious, but otherwise they're a bit meh

repottingthescabious · 13/12/2021 21:20

i'd probably keep the tin of one though, if one of you take the Panettone off my hands

Panacotta · 13/12/2021 21:21

Make a chocolate bread & butter pudding if you get one. The only thing to do with them imo.

Eat with shed loads of cream!

crumpet · 13/12/2021 21:25

Prefer Pandoro, or a choc chip panettone. Either make a lovely breakfast during the Christmas period. But am happy that it’s limited to a certain time of year only - but much otherwise.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/12/2021 21:34

It’s rubbish
All Italian cake is rubbish
It’s too dry
It makes quite a good bread pudding though..

bellabride · 13/12/2021 21:47

Not RTFT: has anyone mentioned Nigel Slater's idea from his Christmas Chronicles?
Slice panettone thickly, spread with warmed mincemeat and make into sandwiches, then fry in butter and serve dusted with icing sugar, with double cream or ice cream.
DH and I are planning to try this as an alternative to Christmas pudding.

HarlanPepper · 13/12/2021 21:53

This thread reminded me I want to make stollen this Christmas, and according to some recipes I might already have left it a bit late - it needs to mature for two weeks! Better get cracking.

FortunesFave · 13/12/2021 22:19

@FabriqueBelgique

I keep seeing them and wondering who buys them, and what for?!
We have it for breakfast! We never want big breakfast and a bit of that with coffee is lovely/
Twillow · 13/12/2021 22:25

Pandoro is way better - a gorgeously airy but rich sweet bready cake a bit like brioche. It comes with a massive sachet of icing sugar which you pour into the bag with the pandoro in and give it a good shake. Slice in a big wedge, or cut horizontally into stars and layer up. Perfect christmas breakfast!
