Came home today to find that DD16 had taken all the covers off the sofa cushions and put them in the washing machine! Fortunately they all seem fine, but surely a spin cycle would ruin them?
YABU: DD is right, they go in the washing machine
YANBU: This ruins them, they shouldn't be machine washed

Totally depends what they are made of and whether they are machine washable

dementedpixie · 25/11/2021 20:40

Do you mean the cushions or the covers?

fourandnomore · 25/11/2021 20:41

Totally depends on the cushion covers and their fabric, check the label!

dementedpixie · 25/11/2021 20:42

You've put cushions in the title
Do you mean cushions or the covers?

willithappen · 25/11/2021 20:42

Mine go in the washing machine 🤷🏻‍♀️
Unless they are a material that shouldn't be in the machine it's not a problem.

I'd be happy id sometime did this for me lol

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 25/11/2021 20:43

Much confusion. Try again please.

ftw163532 · 25/11/2021 20:43

Why did she do that?

sayanythingelse · 25/11/2021 20:44

I have a fabric sofa and a messy toddler. I wash my sofa cushion covers regularly.

CSJobseeker · 25/11/2021 20:44

The whole point of having cushions with removable covers is so you can wash them. Whether or not they should go in the machine will depend on the fabric, but of course cushion covers can be washed!

thesockfromtheroof · 25/11/2021 20:44

Depends on the material but I've washed mine before. Both cushion covers and sofa covers (like the seat covers etc)

I'd love if someone did this for me!

allthegoodusersaretaken · 25/11/2021 20:44

@dementedpixie

You've put cushions in the title Do you mean cushions or the covers?
Sorry, I meant the covers for the throw cushions (not the actual sofa), should've been clearer in my OP!
OP posts:
TangerineDreams · 25/11/2021 20:45

If they're detachable then they're washable surely. I have always washed my sofa cushion covers. It would be kinda gross not to considering we count sofa lifespans in years not months or weeks.
I also wash the small loose cushions themselves too.

SarahDippity · 25/11/2021 20:45

I’d be wondering what prompted your 16yo DD to put cushion covers in the wash!

Aposterhasnoname · 25/11/2021 20:46

Huh, the whole reason cushion covers come off is to wash them

SunShinesBrightly · 25/11/2021 20:47

Sounds like she’s washed the cushion covers.

Do you mean scatter cushion covers (the small ones) or seat and back cushion covers?

Either way, washing them might be ok but getting them dry and putting them back on the actual cushion might be a problem.

LittleDandelionClock · 25/11/2021 20:47

I have never washed cushions. Just the covers. I am puzzled by the poll result! How can so many think your DD is right???

SunShinesBrightly · 25/11/2021 20:48

Xpost. So small scatter cushion covers?
Yes, they get washed!

LittleDandelionClock · 25/11/2021 20:48

Sorry, I meant the covers for the throw cushions (not the actual sofa), should've been clearer in my OP!

So you mean the covers then???? This is all verrrry confusing!

WeatherwaxLives · 25/11/2021 20:48

Completely normal to was removable cushion covers - that's why they're removable!

Sometimes there's a warning about them not being fire retardant if washed, but I've always taken the view that as we don't smoke, if they catch fire then there's already something alight that shouldn't be, so the cushion covers would be low on my concerns at that point!

5zeds · 25/11/2021 20:49

Of course you wash them. That’s the whole point of those ver hot days in the summer.

TangerineDreams · 25/11/2021 20:49

My throw cushion covers are washed monthly or when possible, weekly! We spend long periods of time sitting cuddled up with them, we balance takeaway plates on them on our knees, we stick our chilly feet under them... hell yes they need a wash every now and then Envy - not envy

That said, how nice that your DD is stepping up to the household chore duties and taking the initiative.

SunShinesBrightly · 25/11/2021 20:50

People wash pillowcases but don’t seem to care about cushion covers. I’m sure they get just as dirty over time!

violetbunny · 25/11/2021 20:51

Of course you can wash the covers of throw cushions. Unless they're some kind of delicate fabric they should be fine. I wash ours a couple of times a year. Otherwise what do you do when they're dirty?

Busybee5000 · 25/11/2021 20:53

Going to wash mine tomorrow! All that dust and grime!
