Came home today to find that DD16 had taken all the covers off the sofa cushions and put them in the washing machine! Fortunately they all seem fine, but surely a spin cycle would ruin them?
YABU: DD is right, they go in the washing machine
YANBU: This ruins them, they shouldn't be machine washed

I wash mine. But they say dry clean so I’m very careful, 30 degrees on a wool wash and drip dry flat on a rack over the bath.

I was also that type of teenager Blush

GertrudeBElion · 25/11/2021 22:26

If you don't wash them, what do you do with them?

londonrach · 25/11/2021 22:31

Of course the covers get washed ..how else do you clean them

bluebell34567 · 25/11/2021 23:20

you have a very good dd.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 25/11/2021 23:27

We wash our covers! They probably start to look a bit grubby same as every other item that gets a lot of use. All of the cushions from our couches (seat bits, back ones, arms, the lot!) have zips so the covers can be cleaned

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/11/2021 23:28

DD is right. Say thank you and move on.

Thehermitspermit · 26/11/2021 00:33

We have two big drooly hairy dogs - anything that can be taken off the sofa gets washed once a month - including any cushions that fit in the machine.

If we didn't the house would smell of dog.

To be honest I thought everybody did it periodically and I'm not fastidious with the cleaning or anything. They come off for a reason right? You wouldn't just let them stew getting dirtier and dirtier

caringcarer · 26/11/2021 00:47

Mine go in washer every couple of months.

immersivereader · 26/11/2021 00:49

I do this. I hate doing it but the kids are messy so needs must.

Poppins2016 · 26/11/2021 00:52

I try not to buy cushion covers unless they say they're washable... and if I do take a fancy to 'dry clean only' cushions I tend to buy them in a sale (so it doesn't matter if they get ruined - hasn't happened yet though) and hand wash anyway!

My sofa cushion covers are also washable. I have a winter and summer set (different colours), which are great for weathering the storm of messy children!

claymodels · 26/11/2021 00:55

She washed the washable cushion covers Shock

EllieLucy · 26/11/2021 01:00

@SarahDippity

I’d be wondering what prompted your 16yo DD to put cushion covers in the wash!
It's probably the first time they've been washed in 16yrs judging by the first post! Grin
Rno3gfr · 26/11/2021 01:01

I chucked the whole cushion in the machine the other day. Chill. I wish someone else would take the time to wash my cushions!

nokidshere · 26/11/2021 01:11

I just chuck the whole thing in, I don't remove the cover. They come up a treat.

Rosiiiiie · 26/11/2021 01:16

Ew I 100% wash cushion covers. It’s nasty not to? It’s like never washing your pillow cases? 🤢

Monty27 · 26/11/2021 03:02

Send her to me. I could do with someone like her in my team 🙂

Newmum29 · 26/11/2021 03:23

We wash ours at least monthly

gofg · 26/11/2021 04:39

Of course you wash the cushion covers - that's why they are removable!

Mooloolabababy · 26/11/2021 08:02

Yep, I've done it with all of my sofas

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 26/11/2021 08:33

We're always washing ours. Our puppy loves to run around our garden then jump all over the furniture!

MeanderingGently · 26/11/2021 08:45

Cushion covers come off in order to be washed.....as pp have said. They should be washed every so often (or regularly if you have small children and pets on the sofa) otherwise you'll have grubby cushions harbouring a whole host of bacteria and dust mites.
I hoped you thanked your daughter for doing it and praised her for her excellent housekeeping skills?

PinkWaferBiscuit · 26/11/2021 08:49

I'm actually baffles people make it to adulthood without knowing stuff like this. Surely it's common sense that you remove the covers every now and then to wash them, just as you do with pillowcases??

IdontPracticeSanteria · 26/11/2021 09:05

Of course you wash cushion covers.
Is this a joke?

diddl · 26/11/2021 09:14

I've just put my cushions in the machine!

The covers don't come off so the whole thing goes in.

SmallProvincial · 26/11/2021 09:18

I wash ours ahead of high days and holidays or if they start to look grubby.

I should do it more often.

Monthly would be good.

A never-washed throw cushion cover would be pretty grim.
