Came home today to find that DD16 had taken all the covers off the sofa cushions and put them in the washing machine! Fortunately they all seem fine, but surely a spin cycle would ruin them?
YABU: DD is right, they go in the washing machine
YANBU: This ruins them, they shouldn't be machine washed

I wash all my covers 🤷‍♀️

steppemum · 26/11/2021 09:43

well it depedns what they are made of.

But yes, all mine are washable. They get washed about once every 2 years Blush

SequinnedShawl · 26/11/2021 09:45

What had she spilt on them that she wanted to hide? Hmm

Rubyupbeat · 26/11/2021 09:50

Some need dry cleaning, depends on the fabric type.

Kotatsu · 26/11/2021 09:57

When my kids were younger, despite the settee being covered with blankets, I washed the cushion covers most weeks due to general child ick.

In fact, I learned my lesson and bought the white ones (which I know sounds mad), because that way I could bleach them when they got something particularly horrible on them!

theemmadilemma · 26/11/2021 10:06

Wash mine regularly. This one says dry clean, but I risked it and they're fine. Most are washable and removable for that reason.

daisypond · 26/11/2021 10:10

I wash mine, and I’m the least house-person. They get washed maybe twice a year.

Anoisagusaris · 26/11/2021 10:11

I’m pretty manky compared to a lot of mn’ers and people I see on fb groups, and even I occasionally wash cushion covers!

JunoMcDuff · 26/11/2021 10:43

@SarahDippity

I’d be wondering what prompted your 16yo DD to put cushion covers in the wash!
Yes! This!

This was literally my first thought - what has DD been up to that prompted her to wash them.

GiltEdges · 26/11/2021 10:58

@LittleDandelionClock

I have never washed cushions. Just the covers. I am puzzled by the poll result! How can so many think your DD is right???
Because she did wash the covers. Which are washableConfused
CovidMakesThingsHard · 26/11/2021 11:01

Your daughter is great, you are grim

Electriq · 26/11/2021 11:05

Cushion covers get filthy, of course you need to wash them!

That is why they are removable, ours are washed every 2 weeks.

starfishmummy · 26/11/2021 11:14

Covers yes if the fabric is washable.

Have had cheapish scatter cushions where the cover wasn't removable so have washed whole thing when then toddler ds spilt stuff on them. My premise was it was unusable as it was so I might as well give it a go - sometimes it was fine, sometimes not.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 26/11/2021 11:17

Of course you wash cushion covers. We wash our evers few weeks. And once/twice a year, I strip the covers off the actual sofa cushions (the big ones which are the actual sofa) and get them washed. If its fabric, It needs washing.

Because the OP has clarified she means the covers. Which you also do, so not unreasonable, clearly.
Undertheoldlindentree · 26/11/2021 11:50

Do all mine on very hot days in the summer. Not heavily used as small household and a lot of cushions. Cotton, velvet and heavy tapestry covers, synthetic or duck down inner. All in the machine in batches then dry outside.

hulahooper2 · 26/11/2021 12:41

It’s lovely that she is trying to help out

FourTeaFallOut · 26/11/2021 12:44

Throw cushion covers? Most are washable and I give them a wash a couple of times a year.

Crumblinginside · 26/11/2021 12:45

I've just washed and ironed mine on the back of this thread Grin

dropitlikeitsloth · 26/11/2021 12:49

Depends. Our cushions covers have done coating on them that can’t be washed. There’s a special cleaning solution we have for spot cleaning.

StartingAgain33 · 26/11/2021 13:17

I notice that if i don't wash my cushion covers in a while they have that horrible musty smell you only get in teenage boys' bedrooms, usually from unwashed hair. Which is odd as I regularly wash my hair, but I guess it's just human smell?

So yes I wash them regularly!

VestaTilley · 26/11/2021 13:33

If you’ve got ones that zip undone and can be washed then of course you wash them!

hardboiledeggs · 26/11/2021 13:53

Mine go in the washing machine
