Looking at getting a kindle - I don't want one I can log onto other apps with I want it purely for books!

So with that in mind I've been looking at the Paperwhites - those who have them are they worth it and those who have it 'with ads' do they really get in the way?

Thanks in advance

I've got the new paperwhite without ads.Totally worth it.Love it.
My older paperwhite has ads, they don't get in the way at all, they don't interfere with your reading experience.

Cryalot2 · 20/11/2021 19:58

I started with one like that.I found them a game changer.

Storage was a big plus . I might add dh thinks it one of the best inventions ever.

Also I at times rebought the same book, when they changed the cover and brought out different editions. I cannot do that on my kindle. It tells me the date I bought a book if I look at it again .

Also I rarely spend much on books as use bookbub so it has been a money saver.

It has widened my reading, in that as a result of using the kindle I have read and changed what I read.

I now have the kindle fire ( dh borrows it) but adult dd has the paperwhite and happy with it.

Another bonus for me is I have arthritis and find it much easier than holding books.

There are certain types of books that we prefer in paper form, but they are few and far between.

Hoping this helps

I love my kindle paper white, and the ads are only on the Lock Screen, they don’t pop up when you’re reading.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/11/2021 20:05

I have a paperwhite. Previously I didn't have ads but the coloured one only had ads. They don't get in the way. It's literally just your Lock Screen. The ads are only there and you swipe up to read. I have a kindle fire and it's rubbish imho.

MollyLolly38 · 20/11/2021 20:15

Love my kindle. Before I got it as a gift, I never would have got one myself. But now love it and read so much more again as soon easy to just download on the spot when you get a recommendation or read a review

Glendaruel · 20/11/2021 20:16

Reading this on my kindle fire. Add are not an issue. Amazon has them for half price at moment. I wouldn't be without mine. I've bought them in previous black fridays for my parents who now wouldn't be without them. An added bonus for me is I can change the background in my books to green, which helps my dyslexia and prefer it on night time feeds.

MummyTo2GorgeousMunchkins · 20/11/2021 20:18

I have recently upgraded from a standard kindle to the paperwhite and wish I’d done it ages ago. The backlight allowing me to read in bed without having the light on is superb. I have one with ads (my old kindle had ads too) and they really don’t get in the way at all.

squiddybear · 20/11/2021 20:18

Thanks all. I have kindle unlimited and use it on my phone currently but get distracted with notifications popping up/the screen is bright!!

I didn't realise the ad's were only on the Lock Screen.

I presume I can use kindle unlimited!!

You don’t need the Paperwhite, the basic kindle has the lit up screen now.

I love my old Paperwhite, I have a back up in case it ever goes wrong (it doesn’t).

AnathemaPulsifer · 20/11/2021 21:24

But personally I’d rather pay an extra tenner for no ads.

Spidey66 · 20/11/2021 21:29

I don’t have a with ads one.

I love love love my kindle especially for novels. It saves so much space and is great for holidays.

I love physical books for text books, cookbooks etc ie ones you dip in and out of but otherwise can’t fault a kindle.

Danikm151 · 20/11/2021 21:32

Love my kindle.
I’ve had 3 🤣 currently have the paperwhite.
It’s lightweight, you can adjust the font/brightness etc
Books are cheaper on kindle and send instantly over wifi. You can use kindle unlimited too.
There are thousands of free books available on kindle too.

If you’re considering ads because of the cost…. There are loads on ebay. My paperwhite I paid £25 with a case.

AdaColeman · 20/11/2021 21:33

I’ve had a Kindle since they first came out, I have a paperwhite without ads at the moment.
There are lots of features I like, for instance being able to set up Collections.
I love my Kindle, and wouldn’t be without it.

AwkwardPaws27 · 20/11/2021 21:34

I have a Kobo Libra H2O.
I went with Kobo as im trying to avoid Amazon & it's compatible with our local library service so I borrow a lot of ebooks for free.
The best part is it's waterproof so I can read in the bath Grin

Thankgoditsbedtyme · 20/11/2021 21:39

I have one with ads and I prefer it, it actually gives me ideas on what I can read next. It’s only when it locks too. They perfect for on holiday too as no screen glare, I also use kindle unlimited on it :)

StripyHorse · 20/11/2021 21:40

I love my paperwhite. We don't have much space for storing books - so this is the perfect solution. Being able to read without turning the light on is great.

As others have said, ads aren't really an issue, it's 1 add when you turn it on.

Glinsk · 20/11/2021 21:45

I've had kindles since the original keyboard ones. I now have a paperwhite and had to check if it has ads as I've never noticed- it does.
It's completely different from reading on a tablet, I'm typing from a tablet but my kindle is just for books.
I now actively avoid printed books because the comfort of a kindle is so great. I love the backlight so when I can't sleep I can read at 3am without waking DH.

onlychildhamster · 20/11/2021 21:45

I love my Kindle fire..got a fire as it meant I could read magazines. I actually don't buy physical books anymore as a kindle means that all my books can be stored in a tiny device in my bag which makes it very convenient for holidays.

CityMumma78 · 20/11/2021 21:48

I love my Kindle (paper white)! It’s small, convenient to pop in my handbag, I can read in bed with the screen dimmed without waking up DH. It’s brilliant. Oh and I don’t have ads.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 20/11/2021 21:48

I've had my paperwhite for about eight and a half years now and it's still going strong and working perfectly do definitely worth it for longevity.

The battery seems to last forever- I use it for at least an hour a day, often more, and hardly ever seem to charge it.

NotImpossible · 20/11/2021 21:55

I have an old Kindle (no ads, no light - the one with buttons on the side to turn the pages) - and love it so much that I deliberately sought out another one when mine finally died this year. Amazon no longer sold them - I think all the current models are touchscreen and I'm not sure I'd like that (resistant to change!). I wouldn't be without mine.

DameAlyson · 20/11/2021 21:57

I went with Kobo as im trying to avoid Amazon & it's compatible with our local library service so I borrow a lot of ebooks for free.

I have an Amazon Fire. I can download library books using the Overdrive or Libby app.

Downside of the Fire is that you can't use it in bright sunlight, unlike the Kindle. The battery life isn't as good as the Kindle either, I think. Upside is that you can use it for e-mailing, surfing the web, etc. The 7 inch screen makes it easier to use than a phone.

TokenGinger · 20/11/2021 22:01

I love my paper white. I much prefer reading books on there than on DS's Kindle Fire. I don't like the brightness of a tablet. The paper white is great.

Mine died last year after having it for around 8 years (I stood on it and broke the screen) and I promptly bought another!

SexyNeckbeard · 20/11/2021 22:05

I love my paperwhite. You can use kindle unlimited. They've just started organising books by series which is great too and the back-lit screen is brilliant for reading in all kinds of light
