Looking at getting a kindle - I don't want one I can log onto other apps with I want it purely for books!

So with that in mind I've been looking at the Paperwhites - those who have them are they worth it and those who have it 'with ads' do they really get in the way?

Thanks in advance

@NotImpossible

I have an old Kindle (no ads, no light - the one with buttons on the side to turn the pages) - and love it so much that I deliberately sought out another one when mine finally died this year. Amazon no longer sold them - I think all the current models are touchscreen and I'm not sure I'd like that (resistant to change!). I wouldn't be without mine.
The Kindle Oasis has side buttons if you ever want to trade up.
WeRateSquirrels · 20/11/2021 22:08

Love my paper white but ended up paying to get rid of the ads. They were all for weird bodice ripper type books that I’d never read in a million years and I found it really annoying!

GroggyLegs · 20/11/2021 22:08

I didn't even realise my Kindle had ads. I assumed it was standard that they had a suggested read on the lock screen Blush

So no, not intrusive at all!!

Love my Paperwhite & the kids love reading their bedtime books from it too.

squiddybear · 20/11/2021 22:11

Amazing. Thank you all. I'm trying to spend less time on my phone and I love reading my books with kindle unlimited so am excited to be able to do it with hopefully no distractions.

Great news re the ads I panicked for a moment that it would pop up in the middle of reading

I have a paperwhite. Honestly the best and most used thing I've ever bought. I can read at night in the dark, read in the sun without glare, don't have to worry about storage, and can choose from millions of books so easily. I read 2-3 books a week, and would never do this reading actual books. I'd highly recommend it.

Oatcakeandchutney · 20/11/2021 22:19

I love my paperwhite but I’m upgrading to a newer one for Xmas. The old one is just too slow etc now (but it’s one of the very first paperwhites)
I love how easy it is to read in dark, just slip it into my handbag etc.
I do still get text books in paper form as I need to be able to flick through them.

SenecaFallsRedux · 20/11/2021 22:27

Another Paperwhite lover here. Mine has ads on the lockscreen, and I don't even notice them. The one I have now is my 4th Kindle reader and my second Paperwhite. I also have an Amazon Fire but I don't use it for reading.

Mapletreelane · 20/11/2021 22:42

Love love love my paperwhite. It has re"kindled" (sorry!) my love of reading. Especially easy at night with backlight, and adjusting the font size great for my ageing eyes. I actually have read and enjoyed books from the ads. As others have said, ads are only on the lock screen and don't pop up in books. It's so much better on the eyes too than a phone or screen. I like having my kindle separate to my phone, as I can switch off completely from the real world and immerse myself into my book. X

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 20/11/2021 22:47

I adore my kindle! I have hundreds of books taking up zero (physical) storage space. It’s a different type of screen to a phone or tablet, so it doesn’t affect my sleep if I read in bed at night. The battery life is brilliant too.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 20/11/2021 22:55

Love my (now ancient) paperwhite for all the above-mentioned reasons, however it’s now really really slow and I’m having to charge it more often so I’m thinking of putting a new one on my Xmas list.
Does anyone know if the new one will recognise and pick up all the books on the old one automatically like when you get a new phone, or will it be blank? TIA

Pashazade · 20/11/2021 22:57

Yup another vote for the paperwhite here. They've also finally started organising stuff by series, hallelujah!
You can browse the internet on it ie. Get access to Amazon so you can upload stuff directly.
It will also show you your unlimited selections as a separate grouping if you need.

Angel2702 · 20/11/2021 22:58

I’ve had two kindles, upgrade to the newer paperwhite in February as it’s waterproof but don’t like it as much. It crashes constantly whereas the one I bought in 2017 is still more reliable.

Chichichiwawa · 20/11/2021 22:59

I don't read paper books anymore it's all Kindle for me! I have a Kindle voyage but if i replaced it now id get the paperwhite without ads.

If you get a new Kindle it will sync your library so you'll still have all the same books.

Angel2702 · 20/11/2021 23:05

Yes it will

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 20/11/2021 23:12

can you ;isten to audible books on kindle, nad what generation are they now.. .. looks like 10th gen is the latest in terms of paperwhite.. sorry to jump onto th thread OP but also interested. .. black friday deals don't seem that good atm do they usually reduce more, or is that about it do you think?

Mykittensmittens · 20/11/2021 23:17

I love mine. I’ve had three now. Paper white. All the pluses of reading in the dark etc

But I wish it didn’t fog up in the bath. I like a long soak with my book but it does fog up very quickly.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 20/11/2021 23:19

o.. and if buying second hand is it easy enough to transfer the account to your name? thanks ....

AndStand · 20/11/2021 23:25

Yes I like my Kindle Paperwhite, but I much prefer my Kobo Aura!!
Kobo's have a MUCH better user interface and are far nicer to use. I do use both but the Kobo is far superior and I'm not just limited to buying my books from Amazon, I can shop around. I can also download library books straight onto my Kobo.

JudgeJ · 20/11/2021 23:31

@MummyTo2GorgeousMunchkins

I have recently upgraded from a standard kindle to the paperwhite and wish I’d done it ages ago. The backlight allowing me to read in bed without having the light on is superb. I have one with ads (my old kindle had ads too) and they really don’t get in the way at all.
You can read in bed with a normal Kindle Fire, I think mine's the Fire 8, it has a light that I can adjust as I wish. I always assume that the advantage of the Paperwhite is that they can be red in bright sunlight more easily that the FIre. The one disadvantage, and it's my own fault really, is that it's too easy to think, Oh I'll look that up on t'internet! whilst I'm reading, I spend ages doing that.
Beachbreak2411 · 20/11/2021 23:33

I love my kindle paper white! It’s honestly the best gift I’ve ever been given. I’m a voracious reader and it’s been amazing! The ads only come up on lock
Screen and to be honest I’ve loved some of the recommendations! The only thing I don’t like is the “library” is a bit clunky to use but having kindle unlimited is fab! Free books!!

Bobsyer · 20/11/2021 23:33

I love my kindle. Bit upset (still!) I lost my Voyage as I personally prefer a proper button to turn pages, but that being said, my kindle is my most used gift to myself. Tbh I rarely if ever read proper books now. Too chunky and irritating.

Svalberg · 20/11/2021 23:34

Yes, you can listen to Audible books on a paperwhite, it's via a Bluetooth connection, not a physical lead to earphones

Bobsyer · 20/11/2021 23:34

@JudgeJ - the Fire is just like a phone, it’s blue light and not especially good for your eyes. The kindle is backlit, it’s just like using a sidelight on a book so it’s much kinder.

JudgeJ · 20/11/2021 23:34

@Toohardtofindaproperusername

o.. and if buying second hand is it easy enough to transfer the account to your name? thanks ....
Yes if you have the second hand one restored to factory settings, you can then log it into your own Amazon account, if that's not done I'm not sure you will able to set yours up, it has to be done by the original owner.
Bobsyer · 20/11/2021 23:38

@squiddybear check out Argos - they have kindles from £50. You really don’t need a paper white, they’re all backlit now.
