Looking at getting a kindle - I don't want one I can log onto other apps with I want it purely for books!

So with that in mind I've been looking at the Paperwhites - those who have them are they worth it and those who have it 'with ads' do they really get in the way?

Thanks in advance

the Fire is just like a phone, it’s blue light

The Fire has a setting called 'blue shade' which is supposed to reduce the blue light and is recommended for reading at bedtime.

@JosephineDeBeauharnais

Love my (now ancient) paperwhite for all the above-mentioned reasons, however it’s now really really slow and I’m having to charge it more often so I’m thinking of putting a new one on my Xmas list. Does anyone know if the new one will recognise and pick up all the books on the old one automatically like when you get a new phone, or will it be blank? TIA
Yes, all of your books are stored in the cloud until you delete them. I'm on my fourth kindle, which is my second Paperwhite, and I still have access to books I bought 10 years ago when I got my first one.

Thanks all. I had a voucher for curry's that has been sat in the draw for ages so ordered myself the new paper white. Excited!

@AndStand

Yes I like my Kindle Paperwhite, but I much prefer my Kobo Aura!! Kobo's have a MUCH better user interface and are far nicer to use. I do use both but the Kobo is far superior and I'm not just limited to buying my books from Amazon, I can shop around. I can also download library books straight onto my Kobo.
can you say any more to help us dinosaurs.. how come you use both if kobo is superior? don't like idea of spending so much on technology that then keeps you hooked in .. but have to say i'm keen on trying out in a way that doesnt hurt my eyes after so much screen work now from covid online working

I have a kindle oasis. I chose that as I prefer the buttons to change pages and back when I bought it it was the only one with a warm light. I do love the feel in my hand with the ridge but I am comparing it to a second gen (I think!) kindle and not the paperwhite. I love it, carry it everywhere and read so much more as a result.

sueelleker · 21/11/2021 19:22

I have a paperwhite (after my dog chewed my original one!) It's very light, with good resolution, and a large memory. I think I've got over 1000 books on mine, and I take it everywhere. I love ordering books on-line, and if I pre-order they get delivered automatically as soon as they're published. You can also join up to several websites which send daily offers of cheap/free books.

If you buy your new kindle from amazon, they will sync it to your account for you.

How good are kindles for books with charts, pictures etc?

Doobydoo · 21/11/2021 19:43

I love mine.I don't have ads. I have had one since they first came out..it was bought as a gift and it took me 6 months to try it! Now it is like part of me. So much so that I have accidentally taken it to work! No chance of reading it there! I have over 350 books on it and over a thoysand 'real' books. I tend to buy real books that I like the covers of like Penguin books and may be more unusual(2nd hand). Get one..you will not regret it.

ColinTheKoala · 21/11/2021 19:57

I bought a 8 inch Fire last year as a Black Friday offer. I think it's great - good battery life, I can use Kindle and Borrowbox and also use it for the internet. You can't use all Android apps on it but it doesn't sound like that would be a problem for you. I think it's really versatile and it was £59 - total bargain for a tablet. DH had one too and he also likes his.

It's the one with ads but they don't bother me.

Fromablokespoint · 22/11/2021 11:26

I would go for a dedicated Kindle and not a Fire. As with most tablets you cannot really read outside due to the glare.

Kindles are brilliant - use my paperwhite all the time. Anyone who does not have Kindle Unlimited needs to get - a vast library of all sorts of books for a nominal fee. I have not bought anything for a long time.

I think I am on my third, they last ages but do appear to be quite attractive to dogs! My last one was "nibbled" by my dog and froze with an ad for protective cases on the screen :)

My only criticism is that it has made me a lazy reader. In the past when I bought a physical book I would always finish it, now I find if I am not enjoying it in the first third or so I just stop and find another book. Some of the best books I have read in the past have only grabbed me in the second half.

onlychildhamster · 22/11/2021 12:13

@Fromablokespoint but why would you read outside? I love my kindle fire sorry. It also came in pink. I bought it so i can read glossy magazines (though to be fair, its mostly books on my kindle)

Penners99 · 22/11/2021 12:30

Kindles are wonderful. Got my first one in 2006 and cannot think of not having one now. Can carry loads of books with me.
Well worth the money.

I'm not the person you asked, but I got a kindle precisely because I spent a summer reading outside in the garden & couldn't read the app on my tablet properly due to glare - I'd much rather sit outside & read on a warm day rather than be inside.

Starcaller · 22/11/2021 12:40

Definitely just the standard Kindle if you want it for reading books. Fire tablets are not e-readers, they are tablets just like an iPad, or Samsung or any other brand. Their screen is like a phone screen. A Kindle e-reader used e-ink so it looks like a book page and there is no glare. It doesn't give eye strain like a tablet does.

onlychildhamster · 22/11/2021 12:44

@Svalberg i see. i never read outside, i usually read on the tube/in the train/in the plane/in bed surrounded by blankets. I like being in bed best of all.

onlychildhamster · 22/11/2021 12:45

@Svalberg though I have used my phone outside before and i can definitely see my phone. When the sun is shining that much, I would probably need an umbrella to protect my skin lol! I don't want wrinkles lol

knittingaddict · 22/11/2021 12:52

I love my kindle paperwhite. It's my most used gadget by a mile as I read a few hours everyday. It's also great when insomnia hits at 3 in the morning because the light is low enough to nor disturb my husband. I couldn't live without mine.

knittingaddict · 22/11/2021 12:57

I wouldn't recommend a Fire tablet for reading. It's lit differently and makes reading outside difficult. I read outside all the time and used it a lot during the was summer when eating outside was a thing and in the garden and out and about.

I have a Fire tablet to store my knitting patterns on, so I know how they differ. Definitelythe paperwhite for reading books.

Lying in the sun with a G & T and a kindle and nothing on the agenda - one of life's great pleasures!

onlychildhamster · 22/11/2021 14:36

@Fromablokespoint lol i will get so drunk from that (I got so drunk from 1 glass of Pimms over the weekend) and I wouldn't want to get wrinkles from the sun. But horses for courses.

gingercat02 · 22/11/2021 14:45

@AwkwardPaws27

I have a Kobo Libra H2O. I went with Kobo as im trying to avoid Amazon & it's compatible with our local library service so I borrow a lot of ebooks for free. The best part is it's waterproof so I can read in the bath Grin
I have a a Kobo Clara HD mainly for the reasons here but I wish I had bought a waterproof one too

I always sit in the shade, either under an umbrella or a bush, however you still get glare. I also read in the supermarket queue,the bus, the tube, on aeroplanes and in our library & bed, the kindle is much less disturbing to anyone else trying to get to sleep 🙂

AndStand · 22/11/2021 23:02

@Toohardtofindaproperusername sorry, I didn't see your reply!

I've got a Kindle because I was given it, but I already had a Kobo.
I use the Kindle only for their free books being a total cheapskate, but I use my Kobo far more because it's easier and nicer to use.
For instance, you can change which part of the screen you tap to turn a page if you wish; I've changed mine completely to the left because I hold it in my left hand and I just tap it with my left thumb. I can't do that with the Kindle.
The layout is better set out on the Kobo, it's easier to find a book in "my library".
But best of all I have linked it to my local libraries and I can search their catalogue from it and download any of their books straight onto it for free. I can't do that on the Kindle because Amazon tie you in to their books.
My Kobo is also linked directly to the Kobo store for downloads just like a Kindle is linked to Amazon, and it also has free books.
Hope that helps 😊

DameAlyson · 23/11/2021 15:03

You can on a Fire tablet, you just need the Overdrive or Libby app. I think it's that technology of a Kindle is incompatible with library e-books, that prevents downloading library books, rather than Amazon not allowing it.
