Do those who identify as Conservative here like Thomas Markle?

Evening,

So I've noticed that Conservatives tend to like Thomas Markle? Why is that? Is that solely due to their hate of Meghan Markle?

I find this a bit concerning, because I feel that regardless of views of Meghan Markle, I think a lot of people, particularly those who may be estranged from their fathers/parents by choice, and those who can just see him for what he is, would agree that she's not done 'wrong' to cut him off and be estranged from her father?

Estrangement has been facilitated by people across political leanings.

But then I see GB News welcoming him with open arms, and all comments under berating Meghan and championing Thomas, and I've also seen this behaviour from Conservatives elsewhere.

So the hate for Meghan goes above her reasons for estrangement, to the point that Conservatives like him and feel sorry for him?

I'm confused.

I mean no offence by this, it's just a pattern I have noticed.

I think it's one thing to not like Meghan, but championing him on the basis of hating Meghan I don't agree with.

Vote conservative - dislike him (based on what I know)

Also feel Meghan doesn't come across as genuine but that's based on a few snippets of interviews and footage so just an opinion and I wouldnt let that influence whether I like or dislike anyone else

I've never noticed conservatives liking Thomas Markle tbh

burnoutbabe · 13/11/2021 23:59

Also vote conservative and don't like him.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/11/2021 00:01

These are 2 things that have zero correlation OP Confused

burnoutbabe · 14/11/2021 00:02

Oh and fairly neutral on Meghan. I liked her when she joined the royal family, but found some of her Oprah interview to be a bit um lying? (The pre-wedding ceremony for example) . But still wish them happiness

DaisyNGO · 14/11/2021 00:04

What a strange question

I like Meghan and don't know anything about Thomas in depth but from what I hear, it doesn't sound like he's a great dad.

What this has to do with my politics is beyond me! I voted Labour in the Blair/Brown years, does that help or hinder?!

WorraLiberty · 14/11/2021 00:04

I'm genuinely struggling to get any connection here Confused

DaisyNGO · 14/11/2021 00:07

OP "But then I see GB News welcoming him with open arms, "

I googled this because I thought they'd offered him a job from your comment. So they did an interview? Is that it?

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 14/11/2021 00:07

What the heck (Americanism :) I imagine meagain might say this) does politics have to do with things.

RaisedByPangolins · 14/11/2021 00:12

I don’t have an opinion on him one way or the other, don’t really read ‘celebrity gossip’ which includes all the tittle tattle about the Royals. Always through Meghan was a good strong female character who added a bit of diversity to the RF in many ways (American, divorced, POC, had a day job we all knew about etc) and saw her as a positive addition but some of the interviews and other bollocks that has happened since then makes me question her motives a bit.

I usually vote for whoever’s policies most closely align with my views at the time, which has often been conservative, but has also variously been green and labour over the years. Don’t know how that fits into your spreadsheet.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 14/11/2021 00:15

I don’t like any of the players involved in this tawdry circus. Over the years I have voted for every one of the major political parties.

CheeseMmmm · 14/11/2021 00:15

I know fuck all about him tbh.

Surely the correlation isn't political affiliation but being interested in royal/ sleb goings on...

CheeseMmmm · 14/11/2021 00:17

Is OP suggesting that those who vote conservative are more likely to be partial to celebrity gossip?

Seems so.

Wow OP that's going to make for an interesting thread!

(More interesting than the bizarre actual OP!).

sst1234 · 14/11/2021 00:18

I don’t think anyone particularly likes him. I think people’s dislike of Meghan Markle leads them to believe his story over hers. He would be a total non story if her publicity seeking didn’t put their relationship in the public eye. Or at least people may have more sympathy with her if she didn’t come across as so fake and self absorbed.

Let’s just look at the evidence - a woman who is famous for marrying a prince and lectures others about feminism. She has been caught out telling white lies all over the place. The ridiculous publicity stunts like touring New York like royalty and the going on stage to make political statements. Both Harry and Meghan looked utterly ridiculous. She comes across so badly that it’s not hard to favour her adversaries.

AliceAldridge · 14/11/2021 00:23

What does Thomas Markle have to do with politics?

HeddaGarbled · 14/11/2021 00:44

I think you’re right to some extent. I think there are a certain type of people who like Trump and Johnson and Piers Morgan and Nigel Farage et al, who have got it in for Meghan and therefore support her dad. Yes, GB and Fox News.

However, I think there are also a lot of conservative leaning people who are not fans, a lot who have a more nuanced view, and a lot who don’t give a shit. Just as there are people with other political views.

As always, it’s the weirdo extremists who shout the loudest and get the most attention. My advice is don’t watch GB News!

ISpyCobraKai · 14/11/2021 00:46

Huh?
What an odd question.
What on earth do the two have to do with each other?Confused

BananaPB · 14/11/2021 00:51

I don't think that they like TM per se. TM is a good way to drum up coverage for the channel, even if it's just on social media and it's a good way to stick the boot into a couple that are at war with UK media in general.

BritWifeInUSA · 14/11/2021 00:56

I consider my views to be conservative. Do I like Thomas Markle? I don’t know. I’ve never met him or heard him say enough or seen him do enough to form an opinion either way.

Does it matter what random strangers think of him? Are you married to him?

Dropcloth · 14/11/2021 00:56

Isn’t that’s bit like trying to correlate political leanings with whether people like liquorice, or anything else completely irrelevant?

CheeseMmmm · 14/11/2021 01:09

Do cat owners like the youngest niece of queen Maxima of the Netherlands more than dog owners?

Do people who live in Norwich like Doritos more than those who live in Ipswich?

So many questions...

PurpleOkapi · 14/11/2021 01:46

No. I think he's a selfish, weak, and emotionally volatile man with terrible judgment who's more than earned whatever flack he gets. I feel a bit sorry for him, because I doubt he intended for things to work out as they did, and I think Meghan and Harry could have handled things better from the beginning. But there's no fixing it now, so they're all just going to have to live with their choices.

PurpleOkapi · 14/11/2021 01:46

And I say that as one of Meghan's biggest critics. I think she and her father are very much alike.

Changechangychange · 14/11/2021 02:16

There is more than one type of conservative OP.

The traditional British conservative (Michael Heseltine, Theresa May, most UK Tory voters) likely thinks TM is making a terrible spectacle of himself and lost the last shreds of his dignity when he went on TV to air his dirty laundry in public. They may or may not be a fan of Meghan, but think TM would be a national embarrassment if she hadn’t cut him off.

Then there is the GB News/Fox News Trump/Farage supporter, who is obsessed with “culture wars” (I have yet to meet anyone in real life who gives a flying shit about whether other people are too “woke”). They probably hate TM for being American, but he’s a convenient stick to beat Meghan with.

And then there are people who fall into neither camp…

LobsterNapkin · 14/11/2021 02:18

It might be the other way around. Maybe progressive people are more likely to be really sympathetic to Meghan and so those kinds of news shows don't follow what he has to say?

CheeseMmmm · 14/11/2021 02:21

I follow the news on Al Jazeera, BBC on telly. Read BBC news what's headlines and things that look interesting.

I have fuck all idea what this is about. Why should i feel anything about an ex royals dad in USA?
