Do those who identify as Conservative here like Thomas Markle?

Quirkyme · 13/11/2021 23:53

Evening,

So I've noticed that Conservatives tend to like Thomas Markle? Why is that? Is that solely due to their hate of Meghan Markle?

I find this a bit concerning, because I feel that regardless of views of Meghan Markle, I think a lot of people, particularly those who may be estranged from their fathers/parents by choice, and those who can just see him for what he is, would agree that she's not done 'wrong' to cut him off and be estranged from her father?

Estrangement has been facilitated by people across political leanings.

But then I see GB News welcoming him with open arms, and all comments under berating Meghan and championing Thomas, and I've also seen this behaviour from Conservatives elsewhere.

So the hate for Meghan goes above her reasons for estrangement, to the point that Conservatives like him and feel sorry for him?

I'm confused.

I mean no offence by this, it's just a pattern I have noticed.

I think it's one thing to not like Meghan, but championing him on the basis of hating Meghan I don't agree with.

Me: conservative and can’t see much to admire in in T Markle
DH: conservative and probably doesn’t know who he is.
Most of the people I know think Doria is fine and Thomas is a bit of an embarrassment. I assumed that is what most people thought tbh.

JurgensCakeBaby · 14/11/2021 07:44

I'm not a fan of MM but I also dislike TM, it's possible....

Teeturtle · 14/11/2021 07:46

What’s all this “identify as”, can we not just vote for anymore?

Anyway I would be surprised to learn anyone likes or dislikes Thomas Markle, he is surely not on the radar sufficiently to have any more than a passing thought when he is in the news, which is not that often.

User5632986 · 14/11/2021 07:53

It's not something I have ever thought about, I'm not interested enough in her to be bothered about him

EstuaryBird · 14/11/2021 07:57

I’m assuming (maybe wrongly) that the OP is from the US where being a Democrat or a Republican is much more of an identifier than being Conservative or Labour (or any other) is here. I wouldn’t have a clue about some of my friends’ politics…or their views on the Markles for that matter.

To answer your (very weird) question. I’m Labour and I know little and care less about any Markles and all their drama. There are far more important things in the world to be concerned about.

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 14/11/2021 08:10

I’d say I’m reasonably ambivalent towards both of them. I’m aware I’ve never met either of them and they are surrounded by a very distorted media circus, the facts I hear about them are consistently biased and extreme. Either of them could be quite different to the media persona or presumptions I make. If I met either I’d be polite and courteous to them and consciously dismiss media dramas from my mind.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 14/11/2021 08:12

What an utterly weird question. The two have no correlation whatsoever.

x2boys · 14/11/2021 08:12

What an odd question 🤔
My views are certainly more right leaning ,I don't know Thomas Markle but he seems a desperate man who is willing to cash in on his daughters fame ,and Samantha Markle is even worse .

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 14/11/2021 08:14

I also agree with the ‘identify as’ comments. My local conservative councillors are hard working and experienced, labour field some characters I can’t get behind (huge landlords with fingers in flat building pies). I’ve voted conservative locally. I’ve never voted for them in another area, nor for a conservative MP. I voted for the labour MP, a good candidate. One year the options were so bad I gave the anarchist party a tick.

x2boys · 14/11/2021 08:18

What are the views of Labour voters about Paul I was her Rock Burrell ?🤣

AngeloMysterioso · 14/11/2021 08:23

I’m a politically homeless centre leftie and I think they’re all as grubby and awful as each other.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/11/2021 08:24

I tend to vote Conservative.

I think both Thomas Markle and Meghan are an embarrassment to each other.

I also like cheesecake. I’m sure that’s a Venn diagram waiting to happen.

Lampzade · 14/11/2021 08:26

@PurpleOkapi

No. I think he's a selfish, weak, and emotionally volatile man with terrible judgment who's more than earned whatever flack he gets. I feel a bit sorry for him, because I doubt he intended for things to work out as they did, and I think Meghan and Harry could have handled things better from the beginning. But there's no fixing it now, so they're all just going to have to live with their choices.

I'm a lib dem. I don't like Thomas, Meghan or Harry. I also loathe Andrew if you'd like to pop my info on your graph 😜

AliceAldridge · 14/11/2021 08:29

I'm with Petunia!

FOJN · 14/11/2021 08:32

PaxRomana

Your whole post stokes the culture war you blame the press for. People are not as neatly boxed as you might like to think.

Icebreaker99 · 14/11/2021 08:36

Don't like Thomas - seems like a lying attention seeker, don't like Megan - seems like a narcissist, don't like Harry - spoilt over indulged man child. Have voted Conservative in the past but wouldn't while Boris - attention seeking, narcissist, man child, is PM.

lololololollll · 14/11/2021 08:41

Identify as 🤣🤣🤣

Mhingmighty · 14/11/2021 08:41

@Quirkyme are you trying to imply that you will like TM if you are Conservative because if you are Conservative you will be racist so support anyone apart from MM - even her father?

DerTrotzkopf · 14/11/2021 08:43

Love the 'I vote conservative'. Always ? Even if they are inept ? And what's wrong with a tory government bashing thread ? Don't they deserve it ?

JustFrustrated · 14/11/2021 08:44

Bizarre question, and really shows quite a low level of intelligence.

It's akin to asking if you hate all fruit because you don't like mangos.

(To which my answer would be, I dislike most fruit, but love grapes and British strawberries, and conference pears fyi)

Have voted for lib dem and conservatives in the past.

Can't stand Thomas Markle based on the snippets I've read. Also don't particularly like MM. Thought she was a poor actress and is far too open about personal issues for my taste. That being said, I appreciate she's a good role model for girls who really need it, she dresses fabulously and she's banging the only royal I would, so we aren't that far apart after all.

Hope that helps your weird musings.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 14/11/2021 08:48

It is possible to dislike them both you know. Hmm We don't have to divide ourselves into team Meghan and team Meghan's Dad.

He seems pretty awful. But so does Meghan in a lot of ways.

Griefmonster · 14/11/2021 09:12

I sort of understand what you mean @Quirkyme, probably because I am estranged from a parent and TMs behaviour is so painfully obvious to me as actions of deeply emotionally immature man.

There does seem to be a certain "type" of similar levels of emotional immaturity amongst leading right wing men in particular. Although clearly this is a characteristic that knows no political bounds. Many a left wing person can (and does) display breathtaking arrogance and dysfunctional behaviour. Often the left turns a blind eye to this in a very similar way to the right.

To my mind, the "right wing" media's love of TM is a purely anti-MM agenda. It is not because they think TM is right or believable but because he is saying what they want to push as a narrative. He is convenient.

I would say most people who side with TM do so because they don't want to believe MM.

I used to love MM and largely still do but can see her flaws more now. I have absolutely no doubt though that TM is a deeply damaging, emotionally abusive and manipulative man who is being enabled and encouraged by a deeply cynical and manipulative media machine.

TheVeryDoggyDogperson · 14/11/2021 09:20

I am a Conservative voter and of the faction that used to be known as The Old High Tories – there aren’t many of us left now.

I can't say I like the man, though I can’t say I’m very keen on Harry or Meghan either. Come to think of it I’m not keen on US Republicans - the clue is in the name, and a small, unresolved matter of thirteen colonies springs to mind. Meghan McCain’s comments regarding the Markle family farce on this matter should illustrate my distrust pretty well.

I might even be tempted to go so far as to say that the restrictions on marrying Roman Catholics within the Royal Family should be replaced with a ban on marrying anyone with US citizenship; American actresses seem to be especially dangerous. Though that said, the Pope's support for William of Orange was unconscionable in my opinion.

The previous poster who mentioned different types of conservatives and described both Michael Heseltine and Theresa May as conservative should note that they spring from the liberal economic tradition within the party. Indeed Michael Heseltine first stood for parliament as a candidate for the Liberal National Party before that party merged with the Conservatives in 1968 under Heath’s modernizing agenda; a very sad day for the Conservatives which led to the spreading of liberal economic policies throughout all sections of the party.

More would be known about this aspect of history if the Conservative Party Central Office hadn’t flogged off their research library in the early 1980’s in an act of vandalism that has almost completely destroyed any understanding of party history within The Party and among the wider public. The only good thing to come out of it was that a few bibliophiles with arcane political interests were able to obtain some very rare and interesting volumes in home counties jumble sales for a pittance.

And after writing this I now need a drink. And it's still early on a Sunday morning.

I have also noticed that those who identify as conservatives tend to prefer their ham sandwiches with a generous dollop of (English) mustard. Do you think there could be a connection?

LightDrizzle · 14/11/2021 09:34

I’m not a fan of Thomas at all.

I was very pro-Meghan given I’m fairly indifferent about the royals. I still think she’s been treated appallingly by the media and a swathe of online warriors. However some of the things she said in clips broadcast from the Oprah interview were very odd and I struggle to believe that she was that naive as she seems bright, or that her account is 100% true.
I’ve lost interest in any of them now.

Harry is clearly thick as a brick which can’t help. I still think he’s punching, Prince or no Prince, and I reckon he’s not as “nice” as I assumed, I don’t mean towards Meghan, but in general. He’s entitled. Surprise, surprise!
