Do those who identify as Conservative here like Thomas Markle?

Evening,

So I've noticed that Conservatives tend to like Thomas Markle? Why is that? Is that solely due to their hate of Meghan Markle?

I find this a bit concerning, because I feel that regardless of views of Meghan Markle, I think a lot of people, particularly those who may be estranged from their fathers/parents by choice, and those who can just see him for what he is, would agree that she's not done 'wrong' to cut him off and be estranged from her father?

Estrangement has been facilitated by people across political leanings.

But then I see GB News welcoming him with open arms, and all comments under berating Meghan and championing Thomas, and I've also seen this behaviour from Conservatives elsewhere.

So the hate for Meghan goes above her reasons for estrangement, to the point that Conservatives like him and feel sorry for him?

I'm confused.

I mean no offence by this, it's just a pattern I have noticed.

I think it's one thing to not like Meghan, but championing him on the basis of hating Meghan I don't agree with.

Gimlisaxe · 14/11/2021 02:49

That is a new way of saying all Tory voters are racist, by any chance were most of the people who believed Thomas Markel also chose to vote leave?

Vallmo47 · 14/11/2021 02:56

I just wish everyone would stop feeding the troll (meaning her & her dad). I don’t mean that offensively OP but it’s seriously old news and I swear they’re both as good as each other and loving all the attention. I wasn’t interested on day dot. Go live that peaceful life you wanted and do whatever the hell you want in regards to your dad.

P.S. I can’t vote full stop. ;)

hotmeatymilk · 14/11/2021 03:12

Is the correlation “terrible people”?

ShinyHappyPoster · 14/11/2021 03:17

I think all the Markles (and I include Meghan) seem hugely dysfunctional ie lying; selling stories and interviews on family members.
I've always voted Left leaning or Scottish parties. Definitely not a Conservative.
I voted YABU because of your regressive and outdated stereotyping of left/right views. And also for your disingenuousness and faux naivety over this. 🙄

Iwantmyoldnameback · 14/11/2021 04:44

I am not a Conservative but I feel a bit sorry for Thomas Markle, I think the whole situation was badly handled from the start, particularly Harry and Meghan not bothering to visit him before the wedding.
I did like Meghan, I thought she was going to modernise things a bit but I am finding her smug and hypocritical now.

FOJN · 14/11/2021 05:14

You've used the word hate three times in your OP to describe how you think people feel about MM. I'd suggest starting a thread on the subject reveals you have a great deal more interest in MM and her father than about 99% of the population. It's gossip; a sideshow, most people are indifferent.

It's a very poor attempt to make a case for Conservative voters being hateful, the vast majority are pretty ordinary, reasonable people.

I have never voted Conservative.

pilates · 14/11/2021 06:15

I don’t see the connection at all or is this just another Tory bashing thread.

FuckeryOmbudsman · 14/11/2021 06:21

I hadn't noticed anyone championing him

And yes of course it's another generic Tory bashing thread - one if the kind that wants to put a whiff of nastiness round them for any oks reason, rather than the sensible ones which discuss policies

Prattypitel · 14/11/2021 06:21

What a stupid question. It shows,Conservatives havent got a clue about politics!no wonder, this country is in such a mess.

fournonblondes · 14/11/2021 06:37

I do not like either of them.Meghan has been a big disappointment. I do not really see how people from any walk of life can like or take her side.

Nyxly · 14/11/2021 06:42

I know a few Conservative voters I am a floating voters

Non of us 'like TM' or really sympathise with him.

But then non of us really like H&M either.

BruiserWoods · 14/11/2021 06:42

Im not conservative. Dont "like," him but his daughter has cut him off talking to the press when she has done the same herself. Brown cat, brown kitten as they say.

SarahBellam · 14/11/2021 06:55

I don’t vote conservative but many of my friends likely would - but they’d be conservative with a ‘small c’ in the same way they describe themselves as CofE without troubling God too much except at Christmas and for getting into decent schools. We’re all sort of middle Englanders who are more interested in what cake the local cafe is serving, what we found on EBay and whether we’ll go to the school’s Christmas Fayre. The Markles don’t seem to be troubling anyones thinking.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the ‘staunch’ Tories, at the far right of the party, would have a favourable view because he is critical of a woman who they believe, thanks to her race, should never have been allowed so close to the throne in the first place.

GrandmasCat · 14/11/2021 07:02

What Conservatives?

The way that I see things both Thomas Markle and Megan are pretty much the same, luring the press for personal gain on the difficult to believe excuse that this is done for sake of “family”.

I vote Labour.

PaxRomana · 14/11/2021 07:08

Whatever you think of Meghan, it’s difficult to deny that certain right wing aspects of the press have had it in for her from the start (just look at the comparison between the coverage she and Kate got).

This is probably a mix of wanting a pantomime villain to generate clicks, Harry having a difficult relationship with the press and tapping into an underlying seam of racism/xenophobia that they know sells papers (hence why these papers aren’t exactly know for their tolerant outlook on immigration). Throw in a bizarre personal vendetta from Piers Morgan (also known for right leaning journalism) you can definitely see why the OP has interpreted that there’s a correlation.

Odds are if you vote Tory/are right wing then you get your news from the populist right wing press - the mail/express/telegraph/GMB (or at least the Tory party plays to this audience so you’re voting along those lines) rather than papers that have been more neutral on Meghan (the guardian etc). These outlets are more than happy to give Thomas Markle a platform to generate an audience - I suppose it’s not so much that they like him, he’s just a tool to raise their viewing numbers.

This ‘culture war’ wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for aspects of the press (on both sides) driving it. It’s 2021, most of us don’t get our news from the papers (think of the last time you genuinely heard about a major event from the next days papers rather than seeing it on the tv news/social media/online platforms etc) - newspapers have got to find another angle to sell papers and opinion/identify politics is it (although god knows what it’s going to do to the country if it keeps going).

anon12345678901 · 14/11/2021 07:15

I vote conservative and don't really like TM. But I also don't like Meghan. I think her and her father are both alike.

1Week · 14/11/2021 07:16

I remember Kate getting an absolute slating from the press and SM, Waitie Katie, not posh enough, all of that.
I don't know what went on in the background, bit it wasn't til they were married that the tide on her changed.

A580Hojas · 14/11/2021 07:16

Can anyone briefly summarise the rift between TM and his daughter? Has it all been since she married Harry or were they estranged beforehand?

SirensofTitan · 14/11/2021 07:16

When did people start identifying as supporting political parties and why would assume that everyone has any kind of opinion on TM?

Rissole · 14/11/2021 07:19

@CheeseMmmm

Do cat owners like the youngest niece of queen Maxima of the Netherlands more than dog owners?

Do people who live in Norwich like Doritos more than those who live in Ipswich?

So many questions...

I went to Ipswich once and I like Sherbet Dip Dabs.
AgathaX · 14/11/2021 07:32

Well it's a bizarre new twist for a Tory bashing thread.
Any other comparison gems op?

DeadoftheMoon · 14/11/2021 07:34

@fournonblondes

I do not like either of them.Meghan has been a big disappointment. I do not really see how people from any walk of life can like or take her side.
This. I am also disappointed in Prince Harry, who has turned out to be just like his mother.
SickAndTiredAgain · 14/11/2021 07:36

Does anyone actually like TM though?
I can see how some people may view him as manipulated by the media, and obviously if you didn’t like Meghan you might see their estrangement as not being all his fault. But he’s a father going on tv and doing interviews about his daughter (one with piers morgan of all people, who’s been so massively critical of Meghan that he got fired for it - or resigned, either way). I don’t think anyone looks at that and goes “what a great guy” even if they hear the interviews and think Meghan doesn’t sound great either.
