Fridge not in the kitchen... why??

Momniscient · 10/11/2021 17:17

Recently I've seen a lot of places on RightMove where there's a big American style fridge/freezer is in the adjoining utility space... and nothing in the kitchen Confused

Honestly, I can't get my head around it. I think it'd be unnecessarily annoying to have the fridge in another room... but I'll happily hear any alternative views where there are advantages having the fridge elsewhere! Grin Tell me!

YABU - Living with a fridge in the utility is the dream, you don't know what you're missing
YANBU - Don't do it. The fridge belongs in the kitchen.

Undercounter fridge in the kitchen, tall freezer in the garage.

LuluJakey1 · 10/11/2021 19:20

Our fridge and freezer and all other appliances except the dishwasher, are in the utility but it is a walk into off the kitchen. Our kitchen is low key in terms of units. No wall units above work tops. Larder unit on one wall but that's it. Shelves in dining area.

I seen a house the other day where the only thing in the kitchen was the hob and cooker everything else in the utility room
So sink
Fridge
Kettle etc
Weird

meganorks · 10/11/2021 19:23

When we bought our house the kitchen was miniscule. The only space for a fridge was under the counter, so a super tiny one. This was also the only space for a dishwasher. So we went with dishwasher and got a retro style fridge (so it looked a bit nicer) in the alcove opposite the fridge. It was actually a better position for it as it was fewer paces from the sofa!
We have now renovated so the kitchen is bigger and fridge is in it, but those few paces are a killer when you are in need of a drink....!

Ours had a fridge in a cupboard in the garage when we moved in so had to go through 2 doors. I never realised until we moved in as assumed there would be an integrated fridge in one of the units and the garage was just a back up.

Changed one of the cupboards into a fridge and kept the garage as an overflow/freezer.

We only have a small kitchen but the fridge is used daily so makes much more sense for it to be in the kitchen and the space in the garage is used for things we use occasionally - panni, blenders, big pots, casserole dishes, extra mugs/glasses etc.

My freezer is in a walk in cupboard in my living room and my tumble dryer is also in a corner of living room as my kitchen is tiny, it only has space for a washing machine , cooker and small fridge , if you stand facing the wall and put both arms straight out to the side , you can touch both walls

EatYourVegetables · 10/11/2021 19:38

My fridge is in the utility room and I’ve never considered it being a hassle at all. It’s about 3 feet away from the stove. I don’t understand what this “trudging back and forth” is - you take the things out, put them on the prep surface 3 feet away, and cook. Do you all run between the stove and the fridge 50 times?

AutumnAnn · 10/11/2021 19:42

We have a large American style fridge freezer on our dining room, purely because there's no room for a fridge in the kitchen, not even an under counter or counter top one, it is slightly inconvenient having to walk through 2 rooms to get the milk whenever I'm making a cup of tea, but it can't go anywhere else

DriftingBlue · 10/11/2021 19:44

I lived in two houses like this. In both cases The fridge in the utility wasn’t even that big. The kitchen just wasn’t set up for modern appliances and something had to shift. They were always right next to the kitchen so it was just sort of an annoyance, not a major issue. I was always leasing. I’m not sure I would buy a home with that sort of setup.

CheesecakeAddict · 10/11/2021 20:07

My fridge is in the utility. It's adjoining so hardly a treck and I prefer having the extra cupboard space in the kitchen. I just had my kitchen and utility redone and this was a purpose part of the design.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/11/2021 20:11

We lived in a Victorian terrace that had a ridiculous layout for the kitchen that was all to do with awkwardly placed doors and windows. We should have redesigned it with an extension into a lovely big room, but we sold it and bought a lovely modern flat instead because we just couldn't face the work involved.

BoredZelda · 10/11/2021 20:13

The easy solution is for you to have your fridge in your kitchen and let other people put theirs where they want to.

We bought a house like this. We lasted a year before we knocked out two of the very few kitchen cupboards to make space for it.

When we were refitting our kitchen, I did seriously consider putting the oven out in the utility. I roast a chicken, or bake a cake, a lot less often than I make a cup of tea.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 10/11/2021 20:28

I think this just shows that kitchen layout is very personal. I cook every day, but I haven’t made a couple of tea in around 20 years!

ConstanceGracy · 10/11/2021 20:35

We have one built into the kitchen which is a normal sized one as it was here when we moved in (we replaced it with a new one as it was minging) but we had a decent American fridge freezer that wouldn’t fit in the kitchen so it’s in the garage.
If the utility is right off the kitchen then it wouldn’t bother me.

Backtomyoldname · 10/11/2021 20:37

We ordered a large US style fridge freezer to go in new kitchen, possibly from AO or similar.

A few days before delivery we got a call - ‘you do realise how big it is?’

We thought we did, width and height ok. But the depth…… wouldn’t have fitted through the front door let alone the kitchen door.

Cancelled order, we weren’t the first to do this, and ordered a shallower model.

Perhaps they had size/door width problems?

Oneforthemoneytwo · 10/11/2021 20:37

I have an integrated fridge freezer in the kitchen and an American fridge freezer in the utility.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 10/11/2021 20:37

My fridge is at the back of the utility room. This stops my mindless grazing while waiting for the kettle to boil.

RitaFires · 10/11/2021 20:38

My fridge is more in the diner part of my kitchen diner because there's just no room for it in the kitchen part. It's not really that inconvenient and I don't feel it's too much of a compromise, I imagine people that put their fridges in the utility feel similarly.

Crazycakelady17 · 10/11/2021 20:41

We have a regular fridge freezer In the kitchen and our utility is the washer and dryer would love the fridge to be in there so I could have room for a dishwasher
We are even weirder we have a chest freezer in the downstairs bathroom we have no shed or garage and the only place it would fit it is a bit weird but needs must

Purpleberet · 10/11/2021 20:43

We cook from scratch most of the time so it would drive me up the wall if the fridge wasn’t right next to the prep space. Especially given I often go to the fridge to get a few things, inevitably forget something and have to go back Grin
If the kitchen is small I guess it’s not far to the utility but I’d find it mildly inconvenient

AntiHop · 10/11/2021 20:48

Our fridge freezer in our dining room.

When we bought the house, we already owned an American style fridge freezer that fitted fine in the flat we were living in. But when we moved to a house, we couldn't afford a house with a big kitchen. We didn't want to get rid of the ff as we love all the space in it. So we put it in the dining room instead, which is directly off our kitchen. It's worth the few extra steps to be able to keep our big ff. When we redo the kitchen some day, we will make space for it but having less cupboard space.

Momniscient · 10/11/2021 20:54

Wow, I wasn't expecting such a huge response! Loving the mix of responses, nothing unexpected, so thank you all Grin

Looking at the actual question in your OP, I wouldn’t say having my fridge in the utility is ‘the dream’. ‘The dream’ would be for my fridge to be in the staff quarters as they’d be the one using it Grin.
However as we don’t all have unlimited cash and space, having it in the utility room is the best solution for us at the current time.
