Fridge not in the kitchen... why??

Momniscient · 10/11/2021 17:17

Recently I've seen a lot of places on RightMove where there's a big American style fridge/freezer is in the adjoining utility space... and nothing in the kitchen Confused

Honestly, I can't get my head around it. I think it'd be unnecessarily annoying to have the fridge in another room... but I'll happily hear any alternative views where there are advantages having the fridge elsewhere! Grin Tell me!

YABU - Living with a fridge in the utility is the dream, you don't know what you're missing
YANBU - Don't do it. The fridge belongs in the kitchen.

Why does it matter? Utility rooms are usually joined to the kitchen anyway

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/11/2021 17:19

I've seen a few places like this too (including one where the fridge was in the dining/reception room). The ones I've seen are obviously due to there not being enough room in the kitchen for a huge American style fridge.

XenoBitch · 10/11/2021 17:20

I have a normal size fridge freezer, and it is in the utility room. There is nowhere for it to go in my kitchen.

Caspianberg · 10/11/2021 17:21

We have a small fridge in kitchen. But have freezer and another fridge in cellar. There’s no space in kitchen for larger

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/11/2021 17:21

I’d it’s a big kitchen where the family hang out/fo homework etc, maybe it’s to reduce the fridge noise?

BIWI · 10/11/2021 17:22

I think that would be a nightmare - all that trekking from the hob/worktop to get stuff out of the fridge! I thought one of the key principles of kitchen planning was the triangle, linking the fridge, the hob/worktop and the sink?

glimpsing · 10/11/2021 17:24

There could be an integrated fridge/fridges in the kitchen. Some don't look anything like fridges from the outside, refrigerated drawers for example. So you can't necessarily tell from pictures.

Member984815 · 10/11/2021 17:26

Space issue I suppose,

guessmyusername · 10/11/2021 17:27

I have seen one weirder than that. The fridge was in a walk in cupboard in the hallway behind the coats and beside the stacked washer & dryer.

tootiredtospeak · 10/11/2021 17:28

Mine is in the garage

Before the LL upgraded the kitchen my fridge/freezer was in the walk-in cupboard, there was nowhere else for it to go.

If you're looking on Rightmove I'd say there's probably a built in mini fridge in the kitchen and the bigger one in the utility.

CloseYourMouthLynn · 10/11/2021 17:35

Our fridge is in the utility room which adjoins the kitchen, mainly because it is a big size. It's not a hassle and stops me from raiding it for snacks!

Tangled123 · 10/11/2021 17:37

Slightly different, but we have a chest freezer in our shed and a fridge freezer in the kitchen. It is bloody annoying having to go out to the shed to get stuff out of the freezer but it would take up too much space in our kitchen.

Squ1ggle · 10/11/2021 17:38

We have a seriously tiny kitchen, I'd love to have the (normal sized) fridge freezer in there but it just won't fit so lives in the hall

minniemoll · 10/11/2021 17:39

My mum has a galley kitchen with an attached utility room, the fridge is just round the corner from the kitchen in the utility, the sink is in the middle of one side of the kitchen, and the hob/oven are at the far end of the kitchen. It'd drive me demented, but she's had it like that for years and seems to manage ok.

Travis1 · 10/11/2021 17:40

In my first flat mine was in the cupboard in the living room. It was a galley kitchen and had one of those useless fridges with an ice box. So it was my only option

FrankButchersDickieBow · 10/11/2021 17:43

In our old house we had a long galley kitchen. We turned the bottom end into a utility that had the washing machine, a small freezer, large fridge freezer and microwave.

I LOVED IT. We opted for this so we could have more storage in the kitchen.

Our new house needs a new kitchen, but we will be moving the washing machine into the garage as we have got used to not hearing it and taking up space now. Also our small freezer will go in there.

Kind0fABigDeal · 10/11/2021 17:44

We have an integrated fridge freezer in the kitchen which is too small (was here when we moved in) and a big fridge- freezer in the utility just off the kitchen.
We put the "current" open stuff like milk, cheese etc in the kitchen and ingredients for future meals/ unopened milk etc in the utility one (It's newer and keeps veg much better).

It would be a pain going there for every bit of milk, butter, cheese etc even though it's off the kitchen. But if I'm cooking I just go and get everything I need out at once.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/11/2021 17:46

Our fridge is indistinguishable from the adjoining cupboards.

stormelf · 10/11/2021 17:50

We have an under counter fridge in the kitchen and fridge freezer in utility room. I guess maybe some houses may have an integrated fridge in kitchen so not as obvious. I definitely couldn't cope without a fridge in my kitchen but have no problem with going to utility room for freezer and then storing drinks/over flow food in it fridge

ShinyMe · 10/11/2021 17:55

My mum has her fridge freezer not in the kitchen. Their house isn't big and there's a bit of unused space in the corridor (which goes under the stairs) between the kitchen and the bathroom and the back porch. So the fridge is there, under the stairs and just the other side of the kitchen door. It works fine for them. Means there's lots more room in their kitchen and it feels less cramped in there.

1forAll74 · 10/11/2021 17:57

Not too important where the fridge has to be placed really, it depends on the type of house you live in mainly.

BackBackBack · 10/11/2021 17:58

My parents house is like this and it's a PITA. I prefer having the traditional kitchen triangle because it's easier for food prep.

Blahdyblahbla · 10/11/2021 17:58

My ff is in my utility, there is no door in between, it's really not a difficulty to walk a few more steps. Meant I could have the HUGE favour that I wanted, I wasn't mad keen on the integrated ones.
