Fridge not in the kitchen... why??

Momniscient · 10/11/2021 17:17

Recently I've seen a lot of places on RightMove where there's a big American style fridge/freezer is in the adjoining utility space... and nothing in the kitchen Confused

Honestly, I can't get my head around it. I think it'd be unnecessarily annoying to have the fridge in another room... but I'll happily hear any alternative views where there are advantages having the fridge elsewhere! Grin Tell me!

YABU - Living with a fridge in the utility is the dream, you don't know what you're missing
YANBU - Don't do it. The fridge belongs in the kitchen.

If it's a tiny kitchen then this might be a necessary, if inconvenient compromise. If it was a big kitchen and I were looking to buy the house, I'd factor in the price of a new kitchen, or adaptations to the current kitchen if possible. No way I'd have this just to have a massive fridge. I'd rather a smaller fridge I don't have to trek to.

PaperMonster · 10/11/2021 17:59

I had a friend whose normal fridge freezer was in the under stair space - the kitchen was tiny, so no room.

Snowred1 · 10/11/2021 18:02

Depends where the utility room is off. If off kitchen then it’s fine. We have an integrated fridge freezer in the kitchen but I find integrated make the freezer tiny so we have a second freezer in the utility room with the washing machine.

Ozanj · 10/11/2021 18:03

Generally houses with utlity rooms or pantries tend to have smaller kitchens or kitchen-diners that have no room for big appliances.

DurhamDurham · 10/11/2021 18:03

In our last house we had intergrated fridge in our kitchen and a large American style one in our utility room. When we downsized we didn't have a utility room but didn't want to get rid of our large fridge freezer so it now lived in our garage. We do have intergrated fridge and freezer in our kitchen but we do rely on our garage one for essentials such as wine/beer/pizza Grin

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/11/2021 18:04

We have an integrated F/F in the kitchen and an American style one in the garage. If you looked at photos of our house it would look like we only had the one in the garage.

Our integrated one doesn't have a large freezer section so we need another freezer in the garage. The freezer in the kitchen has the day to day stuff like peas, oven chips, herbs etc. The outside one has joints of meat, batch cooked meals etc. The fridge part outside usually just has wine in, but is a godsend when we have lots of people round.

My American style fridge freezer is not beautiful enough to make it into my kitchen. I have an undercounter fridge in the kitchen, but the white goods live in the utility room.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 10/11/2021 18:31

Well I've got a fridge freezer in the utility and an undercounter fridge in the kitchen. Peak Mumsnet I know but I'd happily get rid of the kitchen fridge and have a bigger one in the utility room. It takes me 2 seconds more to go into the utility so no bother for me.

Whitefire · 10/11/2021 18:37

@Squ1ggle

We have a seriously tiny kitchen, I'd love to have the (normal sized) fridge freezer in there but it just won't fit so lives in the hall
My parents house is like this, they have an L shaped kitchen it goes washer, cooker, corner cupboard then sink/ drainer. That is the space of the kitchen.

The fridge has always lived in 'the back' (basically like a day / everything happens in there room) growing up as a family of 5 we only had a larder fridge with a small icebox freezer at the top.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 10/11/2021 18:39

In our old house there wasn't room or space for a fridge in the kitchen so we had to keep ours in the room next door (was a living room at one point so we actually had to keep it two rooms away.

TuftyMarmoset · 10/11/2021 18:41

I've seen fridges in the dining room quite a lot as well. It's a big turn-off to see a fridge anywhere other than the kitchen as it says the kitchen is too small!

MiniCooperLover · 10/11/2021 18:42

Our utility is only separated from the kitchen by a walk through and our fridge is there. Kitchen is big but I like having appliances to the side 👍

Fridge not in the kitchen... why??
bogeythefungusman · 10/11/2021 18:44

Long galley kitchen with utility room next door. The fridge /freezer is in the utility room because I'd rather have a table and chairs in the kitchen - it's really no effort to go the extra few feet to get stuff out of the fridge.

GTAlogic · 10/11/2021 18:45

We're not posh enough to have a separate utility area but our normal, UK sized fridge freezer is kept in the space next to the kitchen where the side door is because that's where there is space and a plug socket available to use. The kitchen isn't big enough.

Shelovesamystery · 10/11/2021 18:45

My kitchen is long with a utility room at one end, only space for a fridge freezer is in the utility room. It's a big fat PITA! I don't know what whoever designed my kitchen was thinking but I cannot wait until I can afford to change it. When we do the fridge is going in the kitchen without a doubt. We have an ridiculous amount of worktop so there's plenty of space.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/11/2021 18:56

viewed a hous once with a giant american style fridge taking up a huge chunk of the dining area space - the woman was sooo proud of it.
When I commented not ideal, she showed me the normal fridge in the kitchen.
Both fridges were full of cans of coke - might have been a pint of milk in the kitchen one.
WHy - who needs that many cans of coke?

labazslovesliving · 10/11/2021 18:56

it doesn't sit right to me kitchens are for fridges or freezers but I have a ridiculous kitchen but have managed to put a fridge freezer in it. if I could not get it in then I would prefer to have a small fridge for milk etc in the kitchen

Belledan1 · 10/11/2021 19:01

My fridge freeze is in the utility as kitchen quite small. Could probably fit one in at a squeeze. It's just down a step though. Only appliance in my kitchen is a microwave. Washer/dryer in utility too. Dont have a dishwasher. Would like to knock through one day but house needs to much doing to it and may downsize. Can be a but if a pain putting things back but use tomorrow now.

wertheppl · 10/11/2021 19:02

We had the fridge in the utility room when we moved here and it was just bonkers. Really annoyed me when making cup of tea and having to go get the milk and out it bk! It was even a fancy fridge just a big standard tall white one.

We redid the kitchen with a year anyway. So that sorted that out. It now has a tumble dryer in that space next to the washing machine and cupboards on the wall.

hotmeatymilk · 10/11/2021 19:07

My ideal would be a fridge-freezer in a pantry off the kitchen, and utility elsewhere. But I live in a normal tiny terrace so it’s in the kitchen and no utility.

Used to have a flat with the tumble dryer in the kitchen and freezer in the bathroom, for space reasons. That was a pain in the bum

VainAbigail · 10/11/2021 19:10

I used to have a client who’s kitchen was minuscule, to the point that it didn’t even have an oven. It had a fridge and a washing machine and that was it!

notangelinajolie · 10/11/2021 19:12

We moved our fridge into the utility - our kitchen is an open plan/living space and it was too noisy.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 10/11/2021 19:14

Ours is in the utility as it doesn’t fit in the kitchen. When we moved in there were small under counter fridge and freezers and they weren’t big enough for a family of 5. So we knocked out some cupboards in the utility, put a huge fridge freezer in there and turned the old fridge and freezer spaces into extra cupboards.
Works for us! The utility adjoins the kitchen anyway.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 10/11/2021 19:16

Oh and we don’t drink tea and I have my coffee black so the ‘getting the milk’ thing isn’t an issue Grin. Not that it would be anyway, because it’s still only about 4 steps from the kettle to the fridge.
