Fridge not in the kitchen... why??

Momniscient · 10/11/2021 17:17

Recently I've seen a lot of places on RightMove where there's a big American style fridge/freezer is in the adjoining utility space... and nothing in the kitchen Confused

Honestly, I can't get my head around it. I think it'd be unnecessarily annoying to have the fridge in another room... but I'll happily hear any alternative views where there are advantages having the fridge elsewhere! Grin Tell me!

YABU - Living with a fridge in the utility is the dream, you don't know what you're missing
YANBU - Don't do it. The fridge belongs in the kitchen.

We have an integrated normal sized fridge freezer in the kitchen and an ordinary fridge freezer in the garage.

BigYellowHat · 11/11/2021 08:13

Years ago, I had to have my fridge freezer in the hallway which was literally right next to the kitchen in an alcove. I could reach round from the kitchen to it if I wanted although I usually walked out to get things. Took an extra couple of seconds but not a problem whatsoever.

BigYellowHat · 11/11/2021 08:14

@HairyScaryMonster

If you're looking on Rightmove I'd say there's probably a built in mini fridge in the kitchen and the bigger one in the utility.
That’s what my friend has got.
PuppyMonkey · 11/11/2021 08:40

No door, it’s an open entrance through in my house.

StrawberrySquash · 11/11/2021 08:42

Probably a space issue, and there is possibility a small one in the kitchen integrated. We had to have our in the living room as students due to lack of space. But in larger houses there is also a trend to move a lot of stuff into the utility room as the kitchen becomes more of a living area. It almost becomes the kitchen!

IncompleteSenten · 11/11/2021 08:48

The kitchen and utility room are right next to each other. It's an extra few seconds. Not a big deal.
I used to live in a house with a huge kitchen and the fridge freezer was in there. Now I live in a house with a kitchen smaller than my bathroom was in the old house 🎻 and the freezer and fridge freezer in the utility are probably closer in terms of steps to the cooker than they were in the old house .

Weird, but not as weird as baths in bedrooms. Admittedly, this happens mainly in hotels, but for the love of all that's holy, why??!!

sunflowerroses · 11/11/2021 08:50

Like others have said, we have an under counter integrated fridge, wouldn't be visible on photos as a fridge. We have a big fridge freezer and separate freezer in the utility too.

@BIWI

I think that would be a nightmare - all that trekking from the hob/worktop to get stuff out of the fridge! I thought one of the key principles of kitchen planning was the triangle, linking the fridge, the hob/worktop and the sink?
I hate the idea of not having a fridge in the kitchen, and having to walk to another room every time you want to put milk in your tea or butter on your toast. My fridge is under the worktop where the kettle is.

I think if you have a second fridge that you just use for stuff that's not in regular use it doesn't matter so much where it is though.

My SIL has recently moved into a rented place while they look for their next project, and the kitchen there only has a small built-in fridge and separate freezer. Their own big fridge-freezer is out in the garage, and she's got used to it now. She just goes out there once and gets all she needs for whatever she's cooking.

@BritWifeInUSA

Ah, we call the ones with two long doors “French-door refrigerators”. Not all refrigerators here look like that though. We have three refrigerators in our home. Two have a freezer at the bottom and one has a small freezer on top. None of them is side-by-side.

I find it weird that they are called American fridges when most of them here don’t look like that. Oh well, you learn something new every day.

We also have americano coffee. No one thinks that means Americans don't drink filter coffee, or espresso, or cappuccino.
Ragwort · 11/11/2021 09:19

I have to go out to the garage (not adjoined to the house) to get to my fridge freezer, I do have a small fridge in the kitchen but due to the design there's no room in the kitchen, or even in the utility room. It's actually a big kitchen with a large dining table and chairs but the way the units have been put in means I couldn't have a big fridge freezer ... and it would look ugly anyway Grin. Shame as I would love an American fridge/freezer (left one behind in my last house).

user1471538283 · 11/11/2021 09:22

I had to do this in our last house and it drove me mad having to go a little distance to get the milk and stuff. It is down to room and big fridges.

Stinkyslippers · 11/11/2021 09:42

Mines a kitchen/diner and the tumble dryer and the fridge live there
Our kitchen is tiny and it's a pain in the arse having them there but needs must

Enko · 11/11/2021 09:50

Fridge freezer in our house is not in the kitchen but actually closer to the cooker than the one in the kitchen of our old house was. I like it actually

StylishMummy · 11/11/2021 10:46

We have an American FF in the utility room and an under counter fridge for milk/cheese/snacks in the kitchen

Yogawankonobi · 11/11/2021 10:50

We have a fridge freezer in the kitchen and a larger freezer in the utility room. The kitchen is big but we are greedy pigs who need more room for food.

I wouldn’t like the fridge in the utility because I’m so forgetful so cooking would mean lots of walking between rooms. Greedy and lazy!

SpookyPumpkinPants · 11/11/2021 11:07

@PuppyMonkey

Trudging back and forth to the fridge? A utility room is literally attached to the kitchen, my big fridge is in my utility and is about three steps away from my main work counter.

What are you lot all imagining? Separate wings and long dark leaky passageways through a crypt to get from the kitchen to the fridge? Grin

Condescending much?!

'Us lot' aren't imagining Utility Rooms as many of us have them or have had them 🤨

I like my fridge in the most convenient place, and that's rarely outside of the working area of the kitchen.

However, it's not always possible & then some compromise needs to be made.

Currently have an under bench one & a ff in the kitchen. Suits me💁🏻‍♀️

Otherpeoplesteens · 11/11/2021 13:53

Many American style fridge-freezers have to be plumbed in for the water and ice dispensers. I imagine that it is often less disruptive to do this in a utility room than a kitchen.

A friend of mine has a holiday home where the kitchen is actually a balcony over the living/dining room with three open sides, so nothing higher than countertop level. The fourth side is the wall to the rest of the house and two doors - one for the utility, one to the hallway. The range is up against the only section of full height wall so the only sensible place to put a full size fridge-freezer is in the utility.

Thepollonator · 11/11/2021 23:54

In my previous house, two up two down, I had my fridge freezer upstairs in the small bedroom as there was nowhere else to put it unless I had it in my open plan lounge/diner.
It was a complete PITA though I did have a mini fridge in the kitchen!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/11/2021 08:43

My Mum had a big f/f in her garage, which was attached to the house but down a passageway then down 3 steps. She had a small under counter fridge in the kitchen. It was a real pain, as stuff kept being pushed to the back and you had to get down on your hands and knees to fish it out!
