A thirteen year old girl overnight alone? Am I being too soft or is this normal?

FrancescaContini · 05/11/2021 22:04

No, it’s not normal.

Mantlemoose · 05/11/2021 22:05

Absolutely not.

Leeds2 · 05/11/2021 22:05

I wouldn't have left my 13 year old overnight. To be fair, she wouldn't have minded being left in the evening, although I didn't, but not overnight.

EverybodyScream · 05/11/2021 22:06

No way. I wouldn't leave my 16 year old overnight (he wouldn't want to stay alone!)

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 05/11/2021 22:07

Nope. I am pretty lax about stuff like this as MN goes but 13 totally young enough to get heebie jeebies.

Comedycook · 05/11/2021 22:07

I have a 13 year old ds....no way would I leave him overnight

steppemum · 05/11/2021 22:08

no, too young.

There is no actual law in England, the law says something like it isn;t allowed if the child is deemed to be unsafe, police can make a judgement call as to if they are or not.
But the accepted guideline is NSPCC which recommends that children under 16 are not left overnight.
While I wouldn't be worried about a 15 year old. 13 is much too young.

If someone rang police/social services they would act, they wouldn't leave them there overnight on their own.

cantgetmyheadroundit · 05/11/2021 22:10

No way. And both of mine were sensible enough at the time, but no.

3luckystars · 05/11/2021 22:12

Way too young.

Nellesbelles · 05/11/2021 22:12

Definitely not, too young IMO

D4NS · 05/11/2021 22:16

I was a ridiculously sensible teenager. I was first allowed to stay overnight alone at 16, and this was 30 years ago.

13? Never in a month of Sundays.

SpookyPumpkinPants · 05/11/2021 22:19

Yes, IMO a 13 yo is too young to be home alone overnight.

Despite the fact that as a 14 yo I was doing overnights babysitting for a family.

Rosebel · 05/11/2021 22:20

My parents used to occasionally go away for the weekend when I was 14+. They used to insist on me having a friend round for the night though.
So I guess it just depends.

WillyWollyWandy · 05/11/2021 22:20

I was 18 before I ever spent a night alone. My parents wouldn’t have allowed it as a child (ie under 18).

I think it’s terrible. If I knew a 13 year old was being left alone, even for one night, I’d most likely report it.

Bringonthepjs · 05/11/2021 22:22

No way

NiceGerbil · 05/11/2021 22:23

Too young.

FatCottonBuds · 05/11/2021 22:25

I was left home alone from 13. Enjoyed the peace!

Bayleaf25 · 05/11/2021 22:26

Definitely too young x

antsinyourpanta · 05/11/2021 22:27

My 15 year old is v sensible and I wouldn't think about leaving her alone overnight.

Feelingoktoday · 05/11/2021 22:29

Too young.

Eltonsglasses · 05/11/2021 22:29

I thinks 13 year old deserves a parent, nothing to do with how sensible, mature or anything else they are. They just deserve to have a parent around.

iwanttobeonleave · 05/11/2021 22:32

I agree. Sad

I'm fairly sure they'd be safe but would be scared and stressed, so I wouldn't.

Skysblue · 05/11/2021 22:58

Google it, all the advice is age 16 for overnight.

Phoenix76 · 05/11/2021 23:03

No, too young.
