Cauliflower cheese

DD (aged 7) wanted just a bowl of cauliflower cheese for tea tonight. She’s had sausage, mash and peas at school for lunch so has a lighter evening meal. I offered sandwiches, crumpets, crackers and beans with toast/bread she insisted she wanted the left over cauliflower cheese from yesterdays roast dinner.

It feels weird to me to have that for tea, but I think I might be UR? She had it warm (microwave). It was basically cauliflower in a cheddar cheese sauce topped with mozzarella and breadcrumbs – I made the sauce myself so know there’s nothing bad in it.

She’s eaten the lot. But I still feel weird about it. Tell me I’m UR and overthinking it Grin

You're over thinking it

Cauliflower cheese is a meal, I usually put some peas on the side in the hope my DC eat them….

AFS1 · 01/11/2021 16:29

Yum! I sometimes have cauliflower cheese as a main meal. Often with some bacon in the side just to add an extra layer of lard!

purplesequins · 01/11/2021 16:30

it's fine.
and great not go waste food.

MarioPants · 01/11/2021 16:30

To add, cauliflower cheese is a great meal. It contains veg, dairy, protein and fat plus some carb with the breadcrumb topping. Don't sweat it.

TacoTues · 01/11/2021 16:30

Yuuuum

Cauliflower cheese is one of my favourite meals. I make too much on purpose so I can have it for lunch the next day.

Sometimes I have bread and butter with it too.

HazelandChacha · 01/11/2021 16:30

School lunches are tiny. They use a lot of energy in school, a good bowl of cheese filled sauce over cauli , especially on a cold day like today, sounds perfect!

Dixiechickonhols · 01/11/2021 16:30

Sounds absolutely fine and delicious why wouldn’t it be. It’s an all in one dish. Now I fancy that.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 01/11/2021 16:30

Massively over thinking! Sounds gorgeous. My DM doesn't like pasta and will have cauliflower cheese if she's with us and we're having macaroni cheese .

KittenKong · 01/11/2021 16:30

Nope - I would happily eat that!

longwayoff · 01/11/2021 16:31

? It's a meal. Stop fretting.

irregularegular · 01/11/2021 16:31

It's absolutely fine. Probably just as good a meal as the other alternatives you offer her.

I actually consider cauilflower cheese to a more than adequate and very popular vegetarian main. Served with either crusty bread or potato wedges. Probably peas. Often but not necessarily with bacon in (not so vegetarian in that case, but you get the gist!)

She never eats all her school meal, says they're too big. She's not a huge eater, but is still a healthy weight and height so I'm not worried about 2 hot meals per se it just seems odd to me to eat it. But I am UR I know that, thanks MN

Gosh that was a staple in our house when growing up. My mum was all for balance and we often ate veggie sort of light teas.
It sounds fine to me. Think I want some now..

HikingforScenery · 01/11/2021 16:32

I’ve never tried it. I’ve been meaning to.
I do think it’s strange that you’re offering your child crumpets and crackers for dinner though instead of an actual meal though

AssassinatedBeauty · 01/11/2021 16:35

To me, a good cauli cheese as you describe is a vegetarian main meal. I'd put some green veg with it too, delicious!

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 01/11/2021 16:35

What's weird about it? Cauliflower cheese is a meal. Might make it for dinner tonight actually.
But then I think Cauliflower cheese doesn't belong on a roast dinner.

Laiste · 01/11/2021 16:35

Now i want cauliflower cheese! Hmm

She isn't a huge eater, often leaves most of her school dinner saying it's too much food, she never says she's hungry after meals and is a healthy weight and height so I don't think I'm under feeding her, correct me if I'm wrong though.

Why on earth would you think there was anything wrong with it as a meal? Is it just because it doesn't contain any meat?

Is there a reason she's eating leftovers for her tea? Don't you eat as a family?

mafted · 01/11/2021 16:36

It was a regular dinner when I was a child, with HP sauce and bread and butter.
Unfortunately half my children have inherited DH's dislike of cauliflower.

Clementineapples · 01/11/2021 16:37

Love cauli cheese!
Much better than crackers!

Kite22 · 01/11/2021 16:38

I offered sandwiches, crumpets, crackers and beans with toast/bread she insisted she wanted the left over cauliflower cheese from yesterdays roast dinner.

Of the options, I'd say cauliflower cheese is the one I'd go for too.
I'd see crumpets as a snack rather than a meal, same with crackers.... something to have with cheese instead of a pudding, not a whole meal.

I like cauliflower cheese as a lighter meal in itself.

Justcannotbearsed · 01/11/2021 16:38

Regular dinner when I was a child, we'd fight over the crispy bits and eat it with peas and white bread and butter.
