Cauliflower cheese

DD (aged 7) wanted just a bowl of cauliflower cheese for tea tonight. She’s had sausage, mash and peas at school for lunch so has a lighter evening meal. I offered sandwiches, crumpets, crackers and beans with toast/bread she insisted she wanted the left over cauliflower cheese from yesterdays roast dinner.

It feels weird to me to have that for tea, but I think I might be UR? She had it warm (microwave). It was basically cauliflower in a cheddar cheese sauce topped with mozzarella and breadcrumbs – I made the sauce myself so know there’s nothing bad in it.

She’s eaten the lot. But I still feel weird about it. Tell me I’m UR and overthinking it Grin

It’s a main meal, the same way macaroni cheese is in the UK (understand it’s more of a side dish in the US). Will never understand putting it on a roast dinner for this reason – would you plonk a spag bol on your roast?

It satisfies after-school needs: protein, dairy, vegetables, filling. What’s weird about it?

cauliflour cheese is a normal meal, especially with some peas.

Hotfootit · 01/11/2021 18:04

Baked potato and cauliflower cheese - a perfect dinner for me.

Notcontent · 01/11/2021 18:05

Much better than crackers or crumpets, which are just refined carbs.

OakPine · 01/11/2021 18:07

Your child has more sense than you. Who offers a child crackers for dinner!

drawacircleroundit · 01/11/2021 18:07

You are SO overthinking it! I would love for my DC to ask for vegetable as their meal! And it's got lots of correctly-proportioned food groups in it.

salemcat · 01/11/2021 18:07

I'm eating it right now for dinner......

Maryann1975 · 01/11/2021 18:07

Is there a reason she's eating leftovers for her tea? Don't you eat as a family?
You would hate our eating habits. Every other week, when Dh is on nights, we all eat something different Out of the freezer, quite often leftovers and because of running the dc About we all eat at different times.

Fahrted · 01/11/2021 18:09

I love cauliflower cheese, but I do not like it being called cauli cheese. It's probably the same people who call university "uni".

Anyway, OP, I'd be delighted if even one of my adult children would eat it.

SilverGlassHare · 01/11/2021 18:12

When I was a child, we’d often have cauliflower cheese with lots of fresh bread and butter for dinner. Nothing else! We weren’t very well off… now we have it with gammon and other veg but the cauliflower cheese is definitely the centrepiece of the beak, rather than the gammon.

TillyTopper · 01/11/2021 18:14

That's a delish meal - YABU :)

Wherewhatnow · 01/11/2021 18:15

Also bear in mind school lunches are quite carb-heavy, so she's balanced it out nicely with a veg and protein meal.

BSideBaby · 01/11/2021 18:16

What an odd thing to be worried about OP. I'm trying so hard to find the problem but just don't see it.

BravoWhisky · 01/11/2021 18:17

We are having leftover cauliflower cheese for tea tonight too, with peas and a bit of leftover roast beef. Yum

OhWhyNot · 01/11/2021 18:18

Absolutely fine

Delicious and nutritious

Fernie6491 · 01/11/2021 18:18

We love cauliflower cheese as a main meal, I chop up and fry bacon and add that to the cheese sauce, top it with a few tomato slices, and have garlic bread to accompany it. Delicious!
We certainly feel well-fed afterwards and wouldn't regard it as a 'snack' meal.

Lemonsandlemonade · 01/11/2021 18:19

That was a tea when I was a child sometimes with ham.

Squiz81 · 01/11/2021 18:21

Is this a stealth boast that your child eats cauliflower?!

Was always a main meal for us growing up, with mashed potatoes and carrots. I remember being really surprised to discover it was a side dish in a roast.

SamMil · 01/11/2021 18:21

Cauliflower cheese is a normal dinner food.

BaronessKareness · 01/11/2021 18:21

My DH used to love a big plate of cauliflower cheese, done all crispy & with extra cheese… reckoned it was one of his fav ever meals!
It’s got veg and protein in it… your DC could be eating a lot worse…
Hope she enjoyed her tea x

FindingMeno · 01/11/2021 18:22

I'm having cauliflower cheese tonight.
Be glad your child asked for cauliflower cheese not McDonald's is what I say!

Tirediam · 01/11/2021 18:24

My toddler had a yogurt… I give up!

featheryfancy · 01/11/2021 18:25

I now really want cauliflower cheese for tea. Perfect for a cold dark evening

bloodywhitecat · 01/11/2021 18:25

I don't understand what your dilemma is, why is a crumpet an OK choice but cauliflower cheese causes you to question yourself.

FangsForTheMemory · 01/11/2021 18:26

I'm full of admiration for a child who will choose cauliflower for dinner.
