Cauliflower cheese

DD (aged 7) wanted just a bowl of cauliflower cheese for tea tonight. She’s had sausage, mash and peas at school for lunch so has a lighter evening meal. I offered sandwiches, crumpets, crackers and beans with toast/bread she insisted she wanted the left over cauliflower cheese from yesterdays roast dinner.

It feels weird to me to have that for tea, but I think I might be UR? She had it warm (microwave). It was basically cauliflower in a cheddar cheese sauce topped with mozzarella and breadcrumbs – I made the sauce myself so know there’s nothing bad in it.

She’s eaten the lot. But I still feel weird about it. Tell me I’m UR and overthinking it Grin

Love cauliflower cheese and often make it - tasty and healthy

rainyskylight · 01/11/2021 17:04

Probably in my top 5 weirdest threads I've read on here of all time. It's a hell of a lot more nutritious than offering her crackers or crumpets.

UseOfWeapons · 01/11/2021 17:04

Yummy! Cauliflower cheese 🧀, wonderful food. My sister wakes the best cauliflower cheese ever.
Your daughter is a sensible girl.

SunshineCake1 · 01/11/2021 17:05

Over thinking and we all know what cauliflower cheese is!

Some parents would give anything for their child to eat cauliflower never mind choose it!

seethesuninwintertime · 01/11/2021 17:06

damn you I want cauliflower cheese too now.

grrrrr

randomchap · 01/11/2021 17:06

Perfectly good meal. I was uninspired for tea tonight and now decided to have cauliflower cheese. Thanks

TheDogsMother · 01/11/2021 17:07

Cauliflower cheese was one of my childhood dinners and I'm still surprised when I see it as one of the veg on a roast dinner. It's a lovely meal in it's own right.

Mumofone2021 · 01/11/2021 17:08

One of my favorites. Actually I’m making broccoli cheese this evening with a big chunk of blacksticks blue cheese that’s lurking in my fridge. I am even more excited about it after reading this thread

Gumboots29 · 01/11/2021 17:11

Mine have two hot meals a day on a school day (probably have a sandwich for lunch at weekend and hot meal for dinner). Am I in the minority? This isn’t the first time I’ve heard people mention that if DC have a hot meal at school they just have a sandwich/snack for tea?

RedToothBrush · 01/11/2021 17:11

I'm sorry I'm lost here.

Why is it odd to have 2 cooked meals in a day? Its not untypical.

Why is it odd to eat left overs? Frankly you should encourage it!

Whats the actual point of this thread? I don't get it.

Whats unreasonable about eating relatively healthy left over vegetarian meals for dinner???

CauliflowerCheeseMeal · 01/11/2021 17:13

@Iamnotminterested

YANBU, cauliflower cheese, or cauliflower and broccoli cheese is one of my favourites, in fact I want it for tea today but have already sorted tea. The more mature the cheese the better, yum, and the best thing is none of mine really go for it so it's generally all mine.
The cheddar in the sauce was a 4 maturity, mozzarella was on top.

Bless her, I'd be glad that she asked for something sensible like that. Smile.

I could really go for some cauliflower cheese now... bit of mustard in the cheese sauce, nice grilled topping... It's nice with broccoli florets in it too. Plain steamed fish for me tonight. I'm very grateful to the fish but now I feel just a little bit bereft... Envy

Cocomarine · 01/11/2021 17:16

This is a very odd thing not to have confidence about. More the sort of question I’d expect from a childless person doing emergency childcare - and even then, I don’t think they’d ask 🤣
How have you got to 7 years in without dealing with stuff like this before?!

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 01/11/2021 17:16

We are having cauli cheese tonight, can't wait

cuttlefishgame · 01/11/2021 17:17

My dc are 24 and 22 and still won't eat cauliflower, so you are onto a winner if you ask me.

Platax · 01/11/2021 17:17

Only last week we had cauliflower cheese left over from a roast meal and I had it for lunch the following day. I thoroughly enjoyed it, too. Your daughter is getting veg and protein through eating this, what's not to like?

Switch82 · 01/11/2021 17:18

Thanks for the inspiration! Kids having Mac n cheese with veg I don’t fancy the pasta so made extra veg and having them in my cheese sauce!!

Brainwave89 · 01/11/2021 17:18

Made my mouth water... I think this sounds like quite a good evening meal.

Notospaday · 01/11/2021 17:20

Another strange thread.

Personally I think it's weirder that you serve cauliflower cheese on a roast dinner but I know that I seem to ge in the minority on mumsnet

Hear hear. I'm having cauliflower cheese for my tea tonight and do so regularly. Just cauliflower cheese on its own.

I would never have it with a roast or with Christmas dinner, which seems to be the norm on MN. It's far too filling and would clash with the gravy.

89redballoons · 01/11/2021 17:21

I used to make cauli cheese as a main course for friends when I was a vegetarian student. (I was going to call these gatherings "dinner parties" but that was probably pushing it Grin) I used to serve with some kind of additional carb such as crusty bread, or brown rice. Definitely a meal in itself.

Doomscrolling · 01/11/2021 17:22

I’m envious. My family don’t like cauli cheese so I don’t often get to have it.

LakieLady · 01/11/2021 17:27

YABVU, because I now fancy cauliflower cheese for dinner, with a jacket potato, and I don't have any cauliflower.

Cauliflower cheese is a perfectly good meal imo.

SpookyPumpkinPants · 01/11/2021 17:27

There'll be a cauliflower shortage at this rate!!

Lorw · 01/11/2021 17:27

Bloody love cauliflower cheese. For a quick easy meal not as good as homemade but I buy it in a bag from Iceland, 20 mins in the oven, whack it in a bowl, bloody lovely 😍

ChocolateGingers · 01/11/2021 17:29

I really don't understand this @CauliflowerCheeseMeal :)

DH and I (grown adults) have cauliflower cheese as a main meal (supper at 7pm) at least once a fortnight.

Sometimes I will do a jacket spud with it or top with grilled bacon, but otherwise it's a main meal.

I don't understand people going to all the effort of making a cheese sauce etc and making CC as a side dish with a roast. To me that's completely OTT.
