Cauliflower cheese

DD (aged 7) wanted just a bowl of cauliflower cheese for tea tonight. She’s had sausage, mash and peas at school for lunch so has a lighter evening meal. I offered sandwiches, crumpets, crackers and beans with toast/bread she insisted she wanted the left over cauliflower cheese from yesterdays roast dinner.

It feels weird to me to have that for tea, but I think I might be UR? She had it warm (microwave). It was basically cauliflower in a cheddar cheese sauce topped with mozzarella and breadcrumbs – I made the sauce myself so know there’s nothing bad in it.

She’s eaten the lot. But I still feel weird about it. Tell me I’m UR and overthinking it Grin

Its a vegetable so better than a crumpet?

wellstopdoingitthen · 02/11/2021 18:03

Ooh I fancy cauliflower cheese now 😋

degsydoodoos · 02/11/2021 18:13

When I was young, we often used to have just cauliflower cheese for tea! It's only as I've grown up that I came to see it as a side dish. We'd just have it with crusty bread - delicious tea!

Bathtoy · 02/11/2021 18:13

I think this thread is sponsored by the National Cauliflower Growers Association to boost demand.

myfaceismyown · 02/11/2021 18:18

@countrygirl99

I'm just amazed that nobody has mentioned having chips with their cauliflower cheese. Food of the gods is cauliflower cheese and chips. With grilled tomatoes yum.
My DM would serve this, but of course when she described it, it was cauliflower gratin with game chips and "tomatoes Italienne" (brushed with olive oil, garlic and basil then grilled). We always thought it was somewhat fancy and rather a treat. Delicious!!
MeredithGreyishblue · 02/11/2021 18:26

The Smugs and Sanctimonious are out in force tonight!

seethesuninwintertime · 02/11/2021 18:39

damn the person who mentioned tomatoes to hell.

I WANT CAULIFLOWER CHEESE SO BADLY NOW

when the kids (who don't like cheese) leave home I will eat it LOTS

Anonymous48 · 02/11/2021 18:40

@Clementineapples

but in my opinion it should be prioritized wherever possible

Good for you, have a medal.

I don't think I deserve a medal for trying to give my kids the best upbringing possible.
Queenoftheashes · 02/11/2021 18:51

Why does @Anonymous48 think it’s any of their business whether the OP’s family eats together on a thread about whether cauliflower cheese is a meal?

PeachyPeachTrees · 02/11/2021 19:19

Cauliflower cheese is better than crumpets or crackers and eating left overs is great.

this ^^

Love cauli cheese. It's one of our favourite Sunday lunch. Home baked only one dish to wash up. Veg and protein in one meal.

It's lovely next day too. Sometimes better!

Sillyname63 · 02/11/2021 19:47

I would be grateful she is eating cauliflower, most 7 year old are so fussy. So don't knock it.

grannyjacob · 02/11/2021 20:27

I’d be very happy that she asked for cauliflower, my daughter is 47 and still won’t eat it! 😀

SallyWD · 02/11/2021 20:45

I don't understand this - I often have cauliflower cheese as a main meal. It has protein, veg, carbs, vitamins and minerals. Surely it's more nutritious than the crackers etc you were offering her?

Whatamess582 · 02/11/2021 20:46

Cheese= protein & fats
Cauliflower= Fibre & carbs
Enjoyment factor for her = off the scale.
Effort factor for you =low

Sounds perfect to me. My boys have gone to bed with bowls of porridge before, or cheese on toast or jam sandwiches.

Postitmug · 02/11/2021 21:03

This thread is depressing. Cauliflower cheese: delicious, no probs as a meal in its own right. Wish my DC would eat it.
But jeez, all the angst about what time this child eats, and why her mother doesn't eat with her AS A PRIORITY every day. And the 5 a bloody day ridiculousness being invoked?!
@CauliflowerCheeseMeal you're doing great! Your daughter sounds like she enjoys your home cooking, and requested a really nutritious meal. And you care enough about her to ask a bunch of crazy internet randoms about it when you weren't sure Smile

Clementineapples · 02/11/2021 21:16

I don't think I deserve a medal for trying to give my kids the best upbringing possible.

Yeah the best upbringing equals eating dinner together 🤣
Forget the fact that you know nothing about the op or the fact she sits and eats a sandwich when dd has a meal, you keep trotting on your high horse lol

Clementineapples · 02/11/2021 21:18

Cauli cheese baked with sliced potatoes on top, served in a huge Yorkshire pudding 🤤 want want want!

billy1966 · 02/11/2021 21:19

I adore cauliflower cheese, food of the gods.
I would happily have a bowl of that for breakfast.

She sounds like she has great taste.

MarchingOnTogether · 02/11/2021 21:29

To me it's a side dish rather than a meal but my dd will eat left over cauli cheese as a meal, last time she requested it with peas!

Callaird · 02/11/2021 21:42

Add a teaspoon of s/r flour to 2 tablespoons of cauliflower cheese, mix well, pop into a muffin tin and bake for 12 minutes at 170 degrees.

Cauliflower cheese muffins. Yum! Freeze well.

Bertiebiscuit · 02/11/2021 22:28

Cauliflower is and always has been a staple evening meal for me - nourishing and comforting, usually add another veg, carrots or peas, perfect and healthy. I suspect you are lacking in a basic understanding of good nutrition otherwise you would know that cauliflower cheese has protein, fat,carbohydrate and vitamins and roughage - about as perfect as it gets

TheBigFatMermaid · 02/11/2021 23:45

Good on her for expressing what she wanted and same to you for listening.

I have to make cauliflower cheese a LOT! Most of us love it (except DP, who hates cheese and most veg), DS won't eat gravy, do all meals we have with that, I make CC and pour extra sauce over his food.

changenamepainagain · 02/11/2021 23:52

@ChocolateGingers I'm afraid you sound a little unhinged. No one asked for the pearls of wisdom you are offering. Perhaps you could do one of those perfect mother blogs instead? Or 'how to feed your child a perfectly nutritionally balanced meal every time because you are the adult' - I think you'd thrive on something like that. Smile

Blueink · 03/11/2021 04:58

Overthinking and sounds amazing, hungry!
