Massive Phone Sizes

Lockdownbear · 28/10/2021 07:57

Why are budget phones massive?
Do people actually like having massive phones?

I don't really want to switch to Apple I'm happy with android and looking for a phone for my eldest they are all huge.

AIBU to think that many women and kids prefer smaller under 6inch phones?

There's loads of android phones smaller than 6 inches Confused

Nothingoriginalhere · 28/10/2021 08:02

I think the opposite - many people prefer the larger screens - myself included - reading books, watching tv/downloads smaller phones are not much use!

Warmduscher · 28/10/2021 08:04

Buy a smaller, secondhand phone and get a sim-only contract.

Less likely to be stolen too, if it’s for a child.

Recommend me some because I'm struggling, other than flip phones.

Google Pixel 3a is a small phone and a very good one too.

Of course YABU - also sexist.

Did you post about this before?

StormyTeacups · 28/10/2021 08:06

I have a Google pixel and am very happy with it.

Dh has a giant Motorola because it is used for work.

DD has a Samsung a40 (I think) which is pretty bombproof

JustJoinedRightNow · 28/10/2021 08:06

The iPhone 12 mini is a normal sized phone, that’s what I got instead of the massive iPhone 12 because it was too big to hold and scroll!

StormyTeacups · 28/10/2021 08:08

It isn't sexist to say that men tend to have bigger hands, making using bigger phones easier and more comfortable than for those with small hands.

That's not what OP said though...

cricketmum84 · 28/10/2021 08:14

I have the iPhone 13 pro max and I love it! Don't think I could go back to a "normal" sized phone. It's great for reading, news articles, videos!

theDudesmummy · 28/10/2021 08:17

My DS has to have several phones to ensure he always has a particular app available (for communication). As he wears it on a lanyard all day it can't be too big or would probably hurt his neck.I buy the cheap Alcatels, which are nice and small.

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 28/10/2021 08:19

Thank you for pointing out the ridiculous sexist comment! The only person I know who has a smaller (flip) phone is male!!

I could give lots of male centric reasons for his choice but in reality it's because he works for a big brand and he likes the latest tech which he doesn't have to pay for. I would do the same tbh!

All the coolest kids have big screens, my 12 year old is disgusted with her iPhone 7 (she's due an upgrade so will be part of the big screen massive after Xmas!)

No I haven't posted complaining about phones sizes before. I only went looking for phones the other day and realised how big they all are. But I may not be the first to realise how big phones have become.

Women in general have smaller hands and women's jeans have small pockets.

I get some to travel by public transport may watch their phone as a telly but many others don't.

My current phone is a A40.

Thighdentitycrisis · 28/10/2021 08:20

Big phones are useful as we do so much more on our phones than we used to.
It’s more like a mini tablet

I hardly ever use my laptop now, but have a small iPhone cos I like a small phone

Not sure what the answer is

WeatherwaxLives · 28/10/2021 08:23

When I chose my last few phones I've asked the sales person to remove them from the display so I can see if they fit in my back pocket. The sales men were perplexed, the sales women got it straight away.

However, I currently have a P30 pro, which is massive. And still fits in my pocket!

Boood · 28/10/2021 08:28

On the one hand, I agree with you. When I’m buying a new phone I find I reject half of them straight away because I don’t want something the size of an iPad.
On the other hand, I’m currently doing mobile app testing at work, and it has reminded me just how frustrating typing on the tiny keyboard is, and how much it makes me not interested in using mobile apps.

ApplesinmyPocket · 28/10/2021 09:04

I have a Google Pixel 4 (not the 4a) and I love it. Fab camera as well as being a nice midway size, and is narrow and slim.

My DDs have iPhone minis. None of us likes a massive phone.

I don't think it's that sexist to say that 'many women and kids' might prefer a smaller phone, is it? given that they generally have smaller hands?

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/10/2021 09:08

It’s only sexist if somehow you equate smaller with inferior, which of course is not the point OP is making. Women are smaller, on average, than men. Stating this isn’t saying women are worse than men!

holeofdreams · 28/10/2021 09:10

I love having a bigger phone and have no problem putting it in pockets.

GrumpyPanda · 28/10/2021 09:21

Had this exact same issue buying my last phone! I want something I can hold and scroll with one hand which is almost impossible with most newer phones. Further complicated because I also really really need dual sim. Best I could find in the end was the galaxy a41 - compromised on bigger memory/replaceable batteries etc. It sucks - if I wanted a tablet I'd get a tablet!

modgepodge · 28/10/2021 09:30

I have an iPhone which is too big for me to use one handed, I didn’t realise until after I’d bought it that they actually do make smaller ones. My brother was perplexed by the pop socket on the back (helps me use it one handed and less likely to drop it), it just hadn’t occurred to him that it being big might be a problem for people with smaller hands. I do think there is a male/female element here.

Alwayscheerful · 28/10/2021 10:12

The new iPhone 13 pro max is large and sold out everywhere.
Perhaps larger is the new norm as we are using phones to manage our lives.

Which colour did you order and do you use case please?
IglesiasPiggl · 28/10/2021 10:19

I suppose it's horses for courses isn't it? Some people want a big phone and some want a small one. I imagine the balance of demand is in favour larger ones though, as you can see more on the screen, and most people use their phones for Internet browsing etc nowadays.
