Massive Phone Sizes

Lockdownbear · 28/10/2021 07:57

Why are budget phones massive?
Do people actually like having massive phones?

I don't really want to switch to Apple I'm happy with android and looking for a phone for my eldest they are all huge.

AIBU to think that many women and kids prefer smaller under 6inch phones?

Hate big phones. Wish they would make something the size of the old iPhone 6s

GoldenOmber · 28/10/2021 18:03

YANBU. I held on to my ancient iPhone for ages because every time they released a new one it was huge. My phone is for using out and about, and if I need two hands to use it and it won’t fit in my pocket then it’s more faff than a slightly bigger screen is worth.

MsVestibule · 28/10/2021 23:23

I hate the bigger phones. Even though I have average sized hands (for a woman), they're more uncomfortable to hold and don't easily fit in my pocket. My DCs take the mick out of me for my teeny phone (Apple 12 mini) but I wouldn't get a larger one. Unless the phone companies decide this isn't what we need. I think this is covered in Invisible Women which is on my 'to read' list. www.penguin.co.uk/authors/1080281/caroline-criado-perez.html

So got the PPs who went with the 'this is so sexist, shall we just order them in pink too 🙄' attitude, this IS a feminist issue. It's nothing to do with dainty little women needing dainty little phones, and everything to do with many, many every day items being designed for the average man, with little regard to what the average woman needs.

Lockdownbear · 30/10/2021 00:02

The Iphone mini looks an ideal size. Im starting to realise its not just a women thing, some men do prefer smaller phones that fit in pockets. I'd love an android the size of the iphone minis.

Maybe the massive phone thing and lack of choice is a ploy to push us all to flip phones that seem to be the next big thing.

I was a fast powerful phone but its a phone, not a telly or a tablet.

I waited ages on the rumours of the new iPhone se because I didn’t want a massive phone. My hands aren’t big enough for the bigger phones.

coogee · 30/10/2021 00:11

Nonsense. My husband moans about the lack of compact phones. Nothing to do with hand size, he just wants one that will fit in his pocket.

And not all men have hands like frying pans, to quote the late great Bill McLaren.
BarbaraofSeville · 30/10/2021 07:05

Maybe its more expensive to make phones smaller - more expensive components, more fiddly to make, which could be why there's less choice of smaller budget phones?

I do agree with a PP who says phones have got bigger over time so people don't notice as much. If you upgrade every 2/3 years and each one is slightly bigger than the last, after a few years, you start to realise your current phone is massive compared with the first one you got.

I bet if someone handed round one of the first iphones or Android equivalents, they would feel tiny and smaller than most people actually want, given how much more many of us do on our phones these day, eg actual household admin, filling in forms, plus watching videos.

Thanks to the people who've mentioned the Google phones. I currently have a 2 YO Motorola, which I'm perfectly happy with, but I wouldn't want a phone that's any bigger and I don't want to spend Apple/Samsung money, so it's good to have a bigger choice of sensibly sized phones at a sensible price.

It's not nonsense. So many things are made to be suitably sized for the average man, which disproportionately affects women if things are too big or the wrong shape.

I find it quite uncomfortable to operate our lawnmower because the handle is too wide for me to hold comfortably and the safety mechanism means that you have to have a good grip on the handle to hold it all together or else it stops. I'm not tiny either, I'm 5'7.

Every time we get new workwear at work, there's always arguments because the people ordering it refuse to understand that it's not acceptable to label clothes as 'unisex' when there's been no accommodation whatsoever for women's different sizes and proportions compared to men.

The items fit the men so much better and the women end up with a fleece that looks like a baggy dress because it's designed for a slim, averagely tall man, not a slim average height woman.

Feelinglow27 · 30/10/2021 07:41

I have dropped the last 3 phones I've had purely because they were too big to handle with one hand. So I ordered the new flip and its still massive when you open it up! (My own fault for not checking). I guess l will order a popper.

BTW it's not something made up about things being designed for the average man - www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/feb/23/truth-world-built-for-men-car-crashes

Lockdownbear · 30/10/2021 07:48

The reason I initially considered it to be a woman issue is they won't make phones too big for the average man to handle.

The bit that bugs is the lack of small phones on the market. If you want anything with less than a 6 inch screen (or 5.5 with a huge bezel) your option is the iPhone mini.

I loved my Samsung A3, forced to increase to the A40 and really don't want to go bigger or stick a poppet on to make it even less pocket friendly.

I have a fairphone, I think its about 5.5 inches.

Oh for Christ's sake. What rot. This sets feminism back decades. I like a big phone and I like to eat Yorkies.

I think you’re missing the point people are making.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/10/2021 08:55

OP must have dainty lady hands - unreasonable to assume that everyone does.Hmm

Callmecordelia · 30/10/2021 08:58

I'm pleased to see all the Sony xperia love on this thread. I hung onto my z1 compact for as long as I could, but it finally died earlier this year.

I now have an Xperia 10 ii. It has a mode for shrinking the screen so it can be used one handed, and it is tall rather than wide. Only problem is the camera lags a bit, but it might be a good option OP.

Heathofhares · 30/10/2021 09:00

YANBU. I have small hands and carpal tunnel. I can hold a small phone but have no grip ( and a spasm) that mean I literally throw large phones on the floor...

I am needing to replace my Iphone SE and am loathe to spend 500 + on a iphone 12 mini just so I can hold it. I also like something that will fit in my pocket!

Surely there is a market for phones in all sizes for all kinds of reasons.

Stressed21 · 30/10/2021 09:07

Google Pixel 3a is a small phone and a very good one too.

Totally agree with @delilahbucket. Had mine 2.5 years and still great. I actually have the pixel 6 arriving today and a bit apprehensive about coping with the bigger size

Ietthemeatcake · 30/10/2021 09:19

I got the Pixel 4a and rules point a lot of others for this reason. Perfectly big enough for what I need.

Lockdownbear · 30/10/2021 09:23

Good for you it's certainly not setting feminism back decades to acknowledge that females are generally smaller than males.

Failing to acknowledge the physical differences in the sexes is also what got us to the point that mediocre male bodied people are able to complete in female sports putting females at risk, putting women's sports at risk.

But while men are more able to handle big phones not all men what big phones either.
