Why are budget phones massive?
Do people actually like having massive phones?

I don't really want to switch to Apple I'm happy with android and looking for a phone for my eldest they are all huge.

AIBU to think that many women and kids prefer smaller under 6inch phones?

Men put phones in their front pocket so some will want a smaller phone for comfort!

Samsung do smaller phones. I used to have the A5 currently on A40 as you mentioned. I think they do a mini version of the flagship that looks good too.

We're a Motorola family, all are smaller than 6 inches. I've got the G8 power, the battery life is very good as is the camera.
I can hold it in one hand and message quite easily, but it's more comfortable to use both hands.

@Alwayscheerful I've got the blue, it's so pretty!!

This is the case :) can't seem to copy the link from the amazon app.

For a phone, I like a phone that will fit in a shirt pocket.

If I want to look at cat videos or something, I use a tablet.

If you look on somewhere like CEX you can find cheaper, slightly older phones that are smaller.

The current smallest Motorola is 6.5 inch.

Samsung no longer have anything under 6 inches either.

@JustJoinedRightNow

The iPhone 12 mini is a normal sized phone, that’s what I got instead of the massive iPhone 12 because it was too big to hold and scroll!

I did the same. I was struggling to find a small enough phone to be comfortable to hold and that would fit in my pockets. I don’t use it for reading as I have a kindle paper white and never use one for watching films etc

You get used to a big phone really quickly. "Normal" sized phones feel tiny after a while!

The Samsung galaxy A20s range are 6" phones and £120-140 new. That's a good quality budget phone. We had those for work
The Samsung A02s, M32s... are similar priced and sized - just have a look on Amazon, read the specifications and reviews.

I have the iPhone SE(2020) specifically because I wanted a smartphone that I could use one handed.

I have a Sony Xperia and I always look for the Compact version because they're more comfortable to hold in my hand. Sadly, it looks as though Sony have stopped doing them so I'm hanging on to my out of date one for now.

Exactly this.
I have a 6" phone which is far too big to fit in a pocket. I wanted a phone with WiFi Calling as we have no mobile signal at home and this was the cheapest.
I use a tablet for armchair browsing.

Same. I’m with you, OP - larger phones look lovely but I can’t use them one handed and they won’t fit in my pockets.

Samsung have stopped doing the A20e's. The A02s is 6.5 the M32 is 6.4. I think the smallest Samsung is the S21 at 6.1 & £££.

Remember the days when people paid a fortune to get the smallest dinkiest phones.

I have a huawei p30 Pro.. Pretty average size, similar to the new Google one. Wouldn't want one much smaller than this. And surprisingly it fits in the front pocket of some of my ladies skinny jeans (only just mind you).

Not all women have small hands and want a small phone. I get that it needs to fit in a pocket though.

Yanbu, the increasingly massive size of phones is a pet peeve of mine. They are too big to fit in my hand properly not to mention my pockets. I know you don’t want Apple but I have an SE and it’s a good size, before that I had 5c (same size) and there are usually second hand/refurbished ones about.

I've got a Samsung A41.

I got it less than a year ago and the phone is 6 inches corner to corner

I’m a woman with big (apparently manly) hands so I need a big phone to fit in my big jean pockets that fit my big arse! Send me off to the circus where I can entertain the delicate woman folk.

@Talipesmum glad someone is writing about it.

I picked my current phone the A40 for size, I just can't believe how the smaller phones have all disappeared.

Carphone warehouse have 9 phones under 6 inches,
3 are Apple,
2 are Doro buttons,
1 no longer available,
2 Alcatel-Lucent
And the Pixel4a which I think is due to be replaced.

I agree, OP. I was looking for a new phone earlier this year (certain necessary apps had upgraded past my previous OS and were unusable). Looking for small smartphones, I kept finding suggestions that were to me very large (5", my previous phone was 4.5'' I think). I'm not a big phone user, very devoted to my laptop. I got a Unihertz eventually - they do genuinely small phones - my Jelly 2 is something like 3"!)

I had this exact issue last month! I ended up buying a 2nd hand A40 on eBay even though i ideally wanted a brand new Samsung, not a 2nd hand one

Also on a Sony Xperia- I am 5'0" and have tiny hands, I hate having to always use two hands for a phone!
I cannot use a tablet at all, just hurts my wrists too much, unless I place it ony lap.

I'm with you OP, my current (still functioning) phone is practically a relic from the Middle Ages, a samsung galaxy a3 2017 which has a 4.7 screen. Lovely and small, fits in one hand and in my pocket easily. I am very reluctant to replace it as I just hate the massive ones.
I truly use my phone for calling, messenger, skype, taking pictures etc nothing important and I don't really care for the latest phones. I have a tablet for reading articles and other things. God this makes me sound like I'm a dinosaur but I'm still in my 30's.Wink
Please recommend me an Android.

The only problem I have with bigger phones, is that women's clothes have such ridiculously tiny pockets.
