Massive Phone Sizes

Why are budget phones massive?
Do people actually like having massive phones?

I don't really want to switch to Apple I'm happy with android and looking for a phone for my eldest they are all huge.

AIBU to think that many women and kids prefer smaller under 6inch phones?

@ursuslemonade

I'm with you OP, my current (still functioning) phone is practically a relic from the Middle Ages, a samsung galaxy a3 2017 which has a 4.7 screen. Lovely and small, fits in one hand and in my pocket easily. I am very reluctant to replace it as I just hate the massive ones. I truly use my phone for calling, messenger, skype, taking pictures etc nothing important and I don't really care for the latest phones. I have a tablet for reading articles and other things. God this makes me sound like I'm a dinosaur but I'm still in my 30's.Wink Please recommend me an Android.
I loved my A3 which I had before my current A40, its battery just wasn't holding charge. And the A40 is starting to go the same way.

The Google Pixel 4a at £300 is about as small as Androids come. One of the shops though it would drop in price when the Pixel 6 comes out.

It would just be nice to have a choice wouldn't it. And yes, fitting in your pocket is important.
@Alwayscheerful I've got the blue, it's so pretty!!

This is the case :) can't seem to copy the link from the amazon app.
SmileI am torn between blue and graphite !

Meloncurse · 28/10/2021 13:48

I ended up getting a Pixel4a to replace my Samsung A3 as it was the smallest I could find. It's still bigger than I'd prefer, luckily I got a good case for it as I drop it frequently due to not being able to type and hold it comfortably.

With the number of threads I've read across various forums looking for compact phones, I can't believe that someone hasn't tapped into that market

Toottooot · 28/10/2021 13:49

Should the smaller sized phones also specifically come in pink too? Women sized phones - FFS

Rety · 28/10/2021 13:53

I prefer the big screen phones, I use a pop socket to help hold it, but I use it for watching Netflix, playing games as well as the usual phone stuff so like the big svreen

Chelyanne · 28/10/2021 13:54

Get a classic small phone that does nothing, other kids will not be kind to them.

Enko · 28/10/2021 13:57

I hate small phones ds age 20 won't upgrade his iPhone as he hates the smaller sizes coming out

There's more than just a women's market for compact phones, unless you believe the only people who'll spend £££ on a flip phone are women.

I am following in the hope of finding a new phone - I have a Motorola G7 and it's too big, I think it's played a part in aggravating the tendonitis I have in my hands (and yes, I do have to cut down on screen time but, you know, 2020 ...). I also keep dropping it as it won't fit into my pockets properly.

steff13 · 28/10/2021 14:13

My Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is 5.97" by 2.5". I wouldn't call it a budget phone, though. N

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/10/2021 14:13

I have a big phone. I play PoGo and can’t be doing with piddly little screen sizes.

coogee · 28/10/2021 14:14

Men put phones in their front pocket so some will want a smaller phone for comfort!

This is my husband. When his Sony compact packed up, he ended up having to switch to Apple to get a phone that would fit comfortably in his pocket.

A couple of months later I did the same. I’d never been happy with huge things that seem so popular now.

cricketmum84 · 28/10/2021 14:14

@Alwayscheerful I would go for the blue. The graphite felt a bit samey to me, like they always do that colour? But the blue in the clear case looks really good 😊

That’s not the same thing at all. Physical hand size averages have clear male / female differences. We’re not moaning about it because large phones are insufficiently dainty and girlish. Colour preferences / pink daft marketing is just sexist stereotypes.
coffeeschmoffee · 28/10/2021 15:43

I'm also 5 ft with v small hands. Holding the larger phones genuinely gives me pain in my fingers and joints and I struggle to use the selfie camera at all, I just dont have the necessary width in my hands.

Its not about wanting phones to be dainty, pink and teeny FFS. Its a complaint about yet another bloody thing being geared towards male needs.

Google "best small android phones"

Click some links. Read.

Find one that is in your price range.

Job done?

caketiger · 28/10/2021 16:52

Popsockets! I have small weak hands (arthritis) and couldn't manage without them.

HarrietsChariot · 28/10/2021 16:56

In my experience more expensive phones are bigger. I'm sticking with my old model iPhone SE because the replacement is bigger, and the premium models bigger still. The old SE (iPhone 5 size) is about right, big enough to watch videos on or surf the information superhighway (or even make calls on), but small enough to fit into a pocket.

RoomOfRequirement · 28/10/2021 17:00

Buy a phone loop or ring! They're more secure than the Popsocket on my finger and I haven't dropped it yet with those. So much more comfortable to use. I have an A50.

SockFluffInTheBath · 28/10/2021 17:04

@JustJoinedRightNow

The iPhone 12 mini is a normal sized phone, that’s what I got instead of the massive iPhone 12 because it was too big to hold and scroll!
This is what I have. Sky we’re doing a cracking deal and it’s pocket-sized.

Konstantine8364 · 28/10/2021 17:10

I'm 5'2 and have tiny hands. I used to always have the Sony Xperia minis which were fab but they don't make them anymore. I've got a pixel 4a at the moment and to be honest I'd prefer a smaller one!

It's not sexist at all to want something in a size that is practical for you to use! Not all women would want or need smaller phones but I think plenty would. I'm very active want a phone I can use one handed while I'm doing things!

DeathMetalMum · 28/10/2021 17:14

Problem is the 'small' phones are still too big. I have an A40 and can only just type one handed. When I chose the phone it was the smallest I could find. The Iphone SE available was a nearly 2 year old model. This phone was bigger considerably than my last phone.

JustJustWhy · 28/10/2021 17:30

I bloody love a big phone! I've got the OnePlus Pro 8+
