To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

giveitarestplease · 27/10/2021 23:13

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

Plus… Tim Martin is a Brexiter.

Good enough reason to never give him a shilling again.

RightOnTheEdge · 28/10/2021 00:14

especially after the way the staff were treated during the first lockdown.
They were treated fine?

Mammyloveswine · 28/10/2021 00:14

@Anotherbrokenairer but op said "my patents don't eat out unless they absolutely have to...

FluffyBooBoo · 28/10/2021 00:14

You can't argue with this!

I can definitely argue with some of it, based on my experience.

I've been in several (not for a few years) and only one of them would come remotely close to the description of 'shit-hole'. Some could certainly be described as 'dated', but that's not close to the same thing.

@LalalalalalaLand123

Sorry but you sound like a snob who thinks you're better than everyone else.
It really doesn't.

I haven't even been in a Wetherspoons. I have no plan on ever stepping foot in one. Sounds absolutely shocking.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 28/10/2021 00:18

Now I want to go to spoons for a burger and chips

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 28/10/2021 00:19

I refuse to set foot inside Wetherspoons. I don’t care if that makes me a snob, that brexit supporting hypocritical tosser is not getting a penny from me.

StillMedusa · 28/10/2021 00:22

I ate there yesterday..
I have also eaten at Michelin starred restaurants.
Not a snob. I like 'good food' but during a day out with my Mum it is a convenient stopping place and they do a reasonable number of vegetarian dishes without costing the earth.
My veggie lasagne, chips and salad were tasty, microwaved or not!

@Mammyloveswine
She did and given what she's said when they have eaten out I imagine it wouldn't be Wetherspoons type food.

Sorry but you sound like a snob who thinks you're better than everyone else.
And you sound bitter that anyone has standards. Your issue not OP's.

Yanbu

Livelovebehappy · 28/10/2021 00:31

TBH if I’m in town browsing with DH and we want to just pop in somewhere for cheap food and a quick drink, weatherspoons is ideal. Some people are really pretentious when in comes to dining out. What I hate is paying a fortune to have a meal which because it’s served on a wooden platter with a slither of decorative sauce on the rim, the price is tripled. At least what you see is what you get at weatherspoons.

me4real · 28/10/2021 00:32

It is kind of snobbish, but yep, it's not the best food and often not the most savoury clientele.

musicviking1 · 28/10/2021 00:33

I met up with a friend I hadn't seen in years and she suggested Weatherspoons, personally I found the food inedible and the place depressing and dirty. Perhaps it makes me a snob, I don't care.

MrsIsobelCrawley · 28/10/2021 00:33

Most Wetherspoons are horrible.

Enko · 28/10/2021 00:33

I cant stand Wetherspoons and I could not care less if anyone calls me a snob for it. Horrid food and nope my money is not going there.

giveitarestplease · 28/10/2021 00:34

I'm not pretentious though because I will happily have a Greggs or get a jacket potato from the van in town. I just don't like spoons.

devildeepbluesea · 28/10/2021 00:36

Like PP I'm not too bothered about the food but I refuse to ever give that brexit supporting, staff-exploiting bastard another penny of my cash again.

me4real · 28/10/2021 00:38

Also I live in the West Midlands maybe our Wetherspoons up here is just a bit different then?

@giveitarestplease Some are nice like the one in Malvern, and one I went to in Derby.

I'm in Brum and the ones outside the centre tend to be really grim-scabby alkie-looking types smoking outside the door etc. I think the Briar Rose in town is comparatively ok but I would still choose somewhere a bit nicer.

The food in Wetherspoons has got worse I think.

Tagcurious · 28/10/2021 00:47

By all means boycott the place because of Brexit or food not being up to your standards, but don’t claim they aren’t good employers. Ds works there and his managers are supportive, accommodating and really kind. In contrast some of his friends work in independent establishments which many of you believe are bastions of fair wages and integrity. They really aren’t. The wages are low and they’re not fed and watered, even during long shifts. If you want to believe the owners of these places are all remainers who only care about their employees, you have probably wrong.

Cazziebo · 28/10/2021 00:48

DD2 worked in Wetherspoons. What she told me about the food prep would put you off eating out for life.

(almost as much as a friend asking why the trendy independent cafes always have dirty cutlery - and noticing that she is right)

Danzig · 28/10/2021 00:49

Which spoons were you at where the food was rancid OP?

BIL and OH deserve better than you.

chocolatecerealcampingbrekkie · 28/10/2021 00:52

Yanbu. I feel the same way about Iceland. I'm not a snob , it's just everything is junk, goes off quickly and is surprisingly expensive.
