To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

giveitarestplease · 27/10/2021 23:13

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

That’s for takeaway, not an eat in price. Go away JD Wetherspoons.

No it isn't it's eat in price from the app which you order to a table it's the same on the menus in the pubs, I've even you are wrong and will not admit it.

I'm not wetherspoon but you have a axe to grind.

I really don't understand the logic behind making shit up on a forum when it's easy to disprove.

That's the eat in price. I don't think they even have a takeaway menu on the app.

Againstmachine · 30/10/2021 19:25

Here's a link to the same sort of menu you posted under 7 pounds.

liveforsummer · 30/10/2021 20:15

@TreborBore you're trying really hard to be right when you're wrong and looking a bit silly. Never heard of a takeaway menu but as if it would include a glass of wine 😆

Zebradanio · 30/10/2021 20:24

I would wonder how that’s possible while using quality ingredients and paying staff fairly

Probably the huge bulk buying involved and churning out a set menu all the time.

saraclara · 30/10/2021 22:27

Economies of scale. And they pay above living wage.
I imagine that to some degree the food might be a loss leader. It gets bums on seats, and then people drink. It's not unusual for (non-gastro) pub meals to be cheap for that reason.

BigFatLiar · 30/10/2021 23:01

Sadly if you go to our local independent cafe it probably does come out of the microwave unless its the breakfast which probably has more grease on the plate than left in the pan. The coffee is instant (not even nescafe), the tea if from a catering bag.

We travelled a lot around UK visiting railways and museums plus OH has a thing about seaside town especially if they have piers. We've eaten in nice local cafes and some like Sids cafe in Last of the Summer wine. We've eaten in nice pubs and some really grotty pubs, some nice weatherspoons and some not so nice. All I'd say is being Weatherspoons doesn't make it crap just as much as being a nice local cafe doesn't make it good. Take each as it comes.

Ddot · 31/10/2021 10:10

Its awful its depressing and the food is 🤮 plus the owner is a chump. I'm with you, hate chain pubs and cafes. Give me somewhere that makes the food not just reheats. I'm not a snob! just like nice coffee and cake. Anyway what's wrong with being a food snob, it's your precious body your putting that in, so snob away x

Againstmachine · 31/10/2021 10:52

Which owner would that be Tim Martin owns less than a quarter of the shares.

bizboz · 31/10/2021 11:12

Tim Martin owns more than anyone else and is happy to be the public face of Wetherpoons, spouting off his views on TV whenever he has the chance, so if people choose not to go there on account of him, that's perfectly fair.

Again, making a choice to eat better quality food, isn't snobbery. Snobbery is putting down other people who have to make less expensive choices, and the places that make that choice available to them.

If you look down your nose at Wetherspoons and claim that the people in them are either alcoholics or low lifes, you're a snob, and that's nothing to be proud of.

He’s the Chairman of the company (which he really shouldn’t be with such a large shareholding).

He’s hardly shy and retiring.

Platax · 31/10/2021 11:50

Give me somewhere that makes the food not just reheats.

There's plenty on a Spoons menu that isn't just reheated. And I'm prepared to bet that much of what you think is freshly cooked in other restaurants is in fact microwaved when ordered.

Well said @saraclara

Well said @Rampantivy and @saraclara

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 31/10/2021 12:00

Goodness I don’t think you’re a snob at all - wetherspoons food is not good, and I’d rather spend my money on a homemade sandwich from a cheap abs cheerful cafe. Mind you, I’m also not a fan of harvester or Toby carvery- poor quality and mass produced.

@saraclara said it perfectly

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 31/10/2021 12:34

Oh dear, I never said they were alcoholics or lowlifes. I just don’t like the food - Wetherspoons is not known for its menu. Mumsnet has always been a lovely place to air opinions but I’m not loving being called a snob by people I don’t know and who in all fairness wouldn’t have the same vehemence when speaking to me directly. Let’s not forget all nuance and fall victim to internet call out and cancel culture. This is mumsnet, not twitter.

Travis1 · 31/10/2021 12:37

@BurscoughBooths

I refuse to set foot inside Wetherspoons. I don’t care if that makes me a snob, that brexit supporting hypocritical tosser is not getting a penny from me.
I came here to say this but knew someone would have beaten me to it!
GrandTheftWalrus · 31/10/2021 12:40

Beer and a burger is 6.95 in my spoons. Ours is clean. No sticky carpets etc. Infact I think it's in the camra guide

Fetarabbit · 31/10/2021 12:42

I don't mind spoons, yes the owner is horrendous but the employees aren't and I don't think it's aspirational that they lose their jobs. The food isn't haute cuisine but its affordable, you know what you're getting and I like how they keep the original architecture and include some history of the place in their pubs.

Fetarabbit · 31/10/2021 12:45

I also think there is snobbery as its cheap, probably a lot of it from people who have never been to one. The difference with spoons is that a lot of people instead of just saying ah not a fan as you would for other places, is a more extreme ew its gross etc. For the price of a meal at mc Donald's you can have a filling meal that actually fills you up.

FluffyBooBoo · 31/10/2021 13:03

Oh dear, I never said they were alcoholics or lowlifes. I just don’t like the food

And that sums up the difference between you and the op.

Ddot · 31/10/2021 13:44

Think you'll find I never mentioned the clientele or the staff either. I find it depressing and without charm, the staff were fine very polite but the place had no atmosphere or music. The food was bog standard. Sorry I dont eat out often so bog standard is not for me.

Ddot · 31/10/2021 13:46

I prefer my local garden centres cafe
