To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

giveitarestplease · 27/10/2021 23:13

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

Funny you should say this as we watched the documentary on them that was on Chanel 5 a few days ago whilst we ate our tea on our laps but it was home cooked 😆
I don’t agree with the prick who owns it but if friends or my sister who has my autistic nephew who can’t stand noise want to go I will go have a burger and chips or jacket potato pretty inoffensive you do sound a bit of a snob to be honest

justasking111 · 27/10/2021 23:53

Went once saw an old lady take her teeth out and clean them on her napkin, was just stunned. When DS started university he got a job there, he said it's a slick very efficient operation. Super clean, no rancid food

Bingowingslikeashieldofsteel · 27/10/2021 23:53

My local spoons is one of just a few pubs local to me that I'd be comfortable going into alone to pass some time. They deliver my drink/food to the table, it's clean and the staff are friendly.

I'm sure there are far more landlord/ladies out there exploiting staff and holding views we'd disagree with but if I took exception to everyone who held a different opinion to me I'd never leave the house let alone eat, drink or shop anywhere in public!

If you don't do spoons then don't do spoons, but don't be a twat about it...

XenoBitch · 27/10/2021 23:55

@Fairyfalls

The pizzas are so nice! Give them a try with an unlimited coffee refill for about £7. Sometimes I so sit in there thinking if only I had more money to go somewhere indeoendent but on a budget its OK.
Yep, I used to spend all day in my local just paying £1.25 for unlimited tea. I would sit there doodling, and sometimes getting a pizza. Like you said, they are nice.
Zebradanio · 27/10/2021 23:56

I like Wetherspoons. Food is perfectly decent and its cheap. I could afford to eat in independent cafes. But I don't particularly want to.

kylie122 · 27/10/2021 23:56

I would never eat there !!!!

kylie122 · 27/10/2021 23:57

I remembered I ordered spaghetti and it was on a plate shaped like a box defo a ready meal tipped onto plate

GirlWithAGuitar · 27/10/2021 23:57

Also I live in the West Midlands maybe our Wetherspoons up here is just a bit different then?

minatrina · 27/10/2021 23:58

Not all Wetherspoons are created equal. I'm sure some are fine, but my local one truly is grotty. I had a friend who works there too and she doesn't have much good to say about the kitchen's hygiene practices - but I'm sure that's down to the management of each individual pub.

I won't set foot in any of them for Tim Martin-related reasons, but even that aside I'd certainly not go to the particular one closest to me!

antoniawhite · 27/10/2021 23:59

@BurscoughBooths

I refuse to set foot inside Wetherspoons. I don’t care if that makes me a snob, that brexit supporting hypocritical tosser is not getting a penny from me.
Totally agree with this. I won’t go near them.
CallMeNutribullet · 27/10/2021 23:59

Don't know what your local spoons is like but I worked for them for years and they have really stringant cleaning procedures and frequent audits/mystery shoppers. You'll find their kitchen us spotless.
Yes if you're buying pasta or a curry it'll be pre made and microwaved. Burgers etc are cooked on the grill, their salads are fresh and nice enough. You get what you pay for.
They do treat their staff like shit however but aye you sound like a snob.

Fangdango · 28/10/2021 00:00

I don't go in because of the in your face Brexit propaganda. I think I wouldn't if it was remainer propaganda either.

Miss it, though. Clean, friendly, reliable pubs, always one by a train station or in an airport. Cheap, cheerful pub grub - quality same as many pubs and cafes but consistent. Q

TinaYouFatLard · 28/10/2021 00:00

I had a great breakfast in there the other week.

Some of the alcoholics to whom you so snottily refer might actually be workers coming off a night shift and having a few pints before bed.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 28/10/2021 00:00

they know you hate it yet they keep "forcing" you to go there?
and you keep giving in? why? they will call you a snob whether you go or not so why do you bother going?

This all sounds like a ridiculous power game between all involved.
I'd never go somewhere I would be uncomfortable, especially not with people who'd bully me about it.
Have some self-respect and stop going ffs.

MrsMiddleMother · 28/10/2021 00:00

I'm with you on this one! I've never liked wetherspoons as it is, but especially after the way the staff were treated during the first lockdown.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 28/10/2021 00:01

I haven't been going recently because of Tim Martin's behaviour but surely you could have just got a Panini or a wrap or something?

Some of those people that have been there since opening are probably there for the company more than a drink.

Lollipop567 · 28/10/2021 00:01

They vary massively on area. There’s a great one not far from me in the countryside in a lovely old building and food is nice. The another one is awful with people queuing outside for pints at opening time.

GirlWithAGuitar · 28/10/2021 00:01

Posted too soon....

Also I live in the West Midlands maybe our Wetherspoons up here is just a bit different then?

The 2 I’ve been in were in Birmingham....they were vile, but it was the people in there that made me dislike then, the food was just average pub food.

Newbabynewhouse · 28/10/2021 00:07

I agree with you OP... I'm not a snob either but I don't want microwave curry for a fiver... id rather have freshly cooked food with atmosphere for £15....

MrsFezziwig · 28/10/2021 00:09

@FluffyBooBoo I presume that’s the Caley Picture House in Edinburgh. I came on to say that some of them are in lovely old buildings which might well have gone to rack and ruin otherwise (see also the Standing Order and the Booking Office).

I would love them unreservedly (how could you not love a place that specialises in pint cocktails) were it not for the politics of their owner.

Anotherbrokenairer · 28/10/2021 00:09

@Mammyloveswine

If your parents don't go out to eat at all then surely they'd judge you eating anywhere??
@Mammyloveswine Ah no not quite. If it served food that wasn't mass produced but fresh, wholesome, homemade style it wouldn't be as much an issue for the parents as this style of food would be closer to what they're used to at home.
savagebaggagemaster · 28/10/2021 00:09

@Lalliella

Totally agree. They’re generally shit-holes, the food is microwaved crap and Tim Martin is a gammony cunt.
You can't argue with this!
WorraLiberty · 28/10/2021 00:09

I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

They must've been falling over themselves with gratitude.

I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is? You don't like Wetherspoons and they do, so errrrm yeah ok then.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 28/10/2021 00:10

I’ve not been in a Wetherspoons for years. Like, over 20 years.

The one in my town is frequented by the more ‘colourful’ of our townsfolk. As in, fighty, frequently arrested, gobby and notorious.

I avoid it and would others based on this experience.

Am happily a Snob of my experience is the norm.

Gimlisaxe · 28/10/2021 00:11

I had to double check the user name that I hadnt posted before, or this wasn't an old thread, because I was going to write this exactly, right down to the friend.

Mine is a shithole, one in the next town is lovely
