To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

Food is fine, booze is cheap. Our reasons are snobbish.

But, I do boycott now because Tim a Martin is a knob and I will not give him my money. But it is a shame as there is a good one near my Mum, but nope, he does not get my cash!

Strugglingtodomybest · 27/10/2021 23:35

Sorry op, but you sound like a snob to me. Yes, I'd rather eat in an independent local cafe, but if the majority rules that we go to 'Spoons then that's where I'll go, eat a pizza, and be happy to spend time with my friends/family.

careerchangeperhaps · 27/10/2021 23:36

Our Wetherspoons is quite nice. Sure it's microwave / mass produced food but you get what you pay for and I've never found the food bad. It's. It isn't somewhere I'd go for a naice meal out but it serves a purpose (cheap and cheerful catch up with friends etc.). The pub itself is clean and tidy, the staff are friendly and the customers perfectly pleasant. Your local one sounds nasty though - do you live somewhere a bit rough?

giveitarestplease · 27/10/2021 23:36

Also I live in the West Midlands maybe our Wetherspoons up here is just a bit different then?

They vary and I've been in several. I don't anymore because of the prick who runs it. See also Sports Direct.

PandoraP · 27/10/2021 23:37

I would never eat in Weatherspoon’s and I don’t think I have been in one. I thought only students went there as cheap?

DariaMorgendorffer · 27/10/2021 23:38

YANBU and not snobby at all.

antsinyourpanta · 27/10/2021 23:40

I used to go with workmates for a breakfast there very occassionally. It was a convenient location and suited everyones budget, and was fairly inoffensive. (The food, not the owner)

My kids love a Wetherspoons 🤣🤣🤣 it's not fine dining but it's fine! Their breakfasts are nice! The wine is cheap!

The food isn't rancid... it's quick, it's cheap, but it's fine! The fish (as on fish and chips) is lovely!!

You do sound a bit snobby.. it's a cheap lunch not a fancy birthday dinner!

AlanisMorningShed · 27/10/2021 23:40

I like good food too, but I'm not particularly minted and think the Wetherspoons pizza or breakfast are a great price for lunch. The pizza's are great and freshly made, with a drink/unlimited tea and coffee, it's a bargain.

Eating out as a family is really expensive, especially with teenagers.

Legoisthebest · 27/10/2021 23:42

I have never had a bad meal in a Wetherspoons. Their chips are brilliant, pizzas really nice. My 13 year old autistic daughter likes it there because they are 'quiet' - they have no music or TV blaring out.
(I don't agree with the owners politics but he isn't actually there in the pubs working the bar so I don't really think about it)

FluffyBooBoo · 27/10/2021 23:43

Not a dirty old shithole

I don't think that I've been in any that I would describe that way tbh.

RightOnTheEdge · 27/10/2021 23:43

YANBU for not liking it there if it's not for you.
But YABU to be so sneery and vile about other people who do.

Wetherspoons pubs are full of all sorts of interesting and lovely people, families, retired people who enjoy the free coffee and meeting with their friends, business people who come in to work on their laptops and use the WiFi, workmen on a break, people who come in on their own and sit and read a book.
I'd rather spend time with any of them than a sneering snob.

Mammyloveswine · 27/10/2021 23:44

If your parents don't go out to eat at all then surely they'd judge you eating anywhere??

AdobeWanKenobi · 27/10/2021 23:46

Appropriate username is appropriate.....

GirlWithAGuitar · 27/10/2021 23:46

I wouldn’t want to go in one either. I’ve been in them years ago and they were full of drunk, pervy 50 year old men in the afternoon and a few women who were gobby. Not for me.

Viviennemary · 27/10/2021 23:47

I have been in one but it wouldn't be my place of choice. But its not that bad. McDonalds I won't set foot in.

RAFHercules · 27/10/2021 23:47

We ate in there a few times in the winter when our new kitchen was bring fitted and a lot of the independent cafes were closed due to covid. Mixed reviews! The lasagne was actually surprisingly nice, the staff were pleasant. The meal came with a free Gordon's gin and tonic Grin Each night there were a few homeless people in a side room. They'd been brought in from the cold and other diners had paid for their food.
However it had an air of being quite run down and shabby and of course the owner is a dick.

giveitarestplease · 27/10/2021 23:50

I still take the kids to Morrison's cafe and Tesco's after the food shop and will have a jacket potato or whatever. I don't know what it is about Wetherspoons it just feels dirty. But maybe it's the area we are in..

If wanting to eat something that is better than Wetherspoons makes someone a snob then I’m a snob. Or perhaps I have standards.
But I’m lucky and can afford to eat in independent cafes. Many people like Wetherspoons and that is their choice.

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 27/10/2021 23:51

I wouldn't eat in there now due to Tim Arsehole Whatshisface but I've eaten in the one @FluffyBooBoo posted. Main meal mediocre, been in for breakfast (not bad) but they have a NZ Sauv Blanc for super cheap so that was the pull for me. Sigh.

Talipesmum · 27/10/2021 23:51

I’m afraid you really do sound like you have a big chip on your shoulder about it. What has it got to do with your parents? It’s just basic preprepared pub food. Certainly not rancid! Just pick something basic that can’t be badly mucked up.

Sure, I’d definitely choose to eat in a nice cafe over wetherspoons for lunch, but if you’re out with people who want to go there, it’s a bit graceless to sit there reluctantly waiting for them to finish, not eating anything yourself. And they’re definitely not all unpleasant - some are very well looked after and they’re famously often in v nice interesting old buildings.

Helpimfalling · 27/10/2021 23:51

@TotallySuper

OP I totally agree and it doesn't make you a snob at all.
Agreed
PurpleDaisies · 27/10/2021 23:52

You could have had a jacket potato at Wetherspoons
