I ruined the ghost hunt

I was away last week staying in a castle. Supposedly a very haunted castle but I don’t believe in shit like that, I just like history.

Anyway during the night there was a paranormal investigation going on. I had to walk through the castle on my own to retrieve something from the car and as I walked through one room these guys were surrounding a door recording it and had all their equipment set up around it etc. I needed to get through it. I held back a bit (this was 10pm at night and I was tired, wanting to go to bed). Anyway the door moved slightly and they all got excited. I seriously just needed to get to my car so pointed out that this particular door always moves due to the draught coming up the stairs. Well they all looked daggers at me and asked what I was doing there!! I said I needed to get through the door! So they huffed ans puffed and moved all their shit and the leader said they would have to start again due to interference. I went through, got the stuff out of my car and made my way back through the castle. Unfortunately they had set all their stuff up again. I went through the door and set all the alarms off and they got angry and one said “let’s move to a different area, this is ridiculous”. I didn’t say anything, just headed back to my apartment.

Later that night I opened the bedroom window and instantly was hit with torches in my face. They had got excited due to “movement” from a “haunted room”. I got annoyed, went down to where they were and asked how much longer this would be going on. They said all night. So I told them where I was staying, pointed to the windows and said any movement from these rooms is just me walking around. They were not friendly. As I was speaking one started shrieking about a chandelier swinging in another room and they all went running. I went with them and pointed out the big fuck off fireplace that would inevitably cause a draught going through the room causing anything “hanging” to move. I was then told to “go away!” And was told I was ruining a night that had been planned for months. I told them they were ruining my night that had been planned for months too.
Who was being unreasonable?

I think I love you 😂

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 23/10/2021 09:59

Me too Grin Could you not have managed a small ooooOOOOOooo or something to keep them happy?

Justcashnosweets · 23/10/2021 09:59

This is amazing 🤣🤣

TheDuchessOfDork · 23/10/2021 10:00

Well you didn't need to follow them and start pointing out the obvious, so for that I think you were UR. Up to them if they want to buy into that sort of nonsense.

Other than that, you weren't. If they wanted an experience with no chance of other guests disturbing things then they should have booked a venue in its entirety. It is completely stupid for them to have thought no other guests would move around.

Did you speak to the hotel about it?

M0rT · 23/10/2021 10:00

This is brilliant Grin
If the castle runs on providing accomodation though I think they should probably let the ghost hunters in when they are doing maintenance in the off season.
I wouldn't be too happy if I had paid to stay in a castle and couldn't come and go from my car at will or had people shining lights at my windows in the night!

Totallydefeated · 23/10/2021 10:01

You were not unreasonable to get stuff from your car.

You were very unreasonable to piss on their chips. Are you always a fun sponge?

FAQs · 23/10/2021 10:01

🤣 brilliant!

Pythonista · 23/10/2021 10:02

I think ghosts and ghost hunts are shit too but presumably people had paid to attend so really didn't need you pointing out anything.

DaisyNGO · 23/10/2021 10:02

Wait, what?

You were staying in a castle and the owner had people staying AND a paranormal thing booked at the same time? In areas where you'd have to meet?

Everyone needs a refund!

Loubiemoo · 23/10/2021 10:02

I went on a ghost hunt and one of my group leaned on a door. Unfortunately it was a fire escape and as they had leaned on the bar it opened and set the fire alarms off. Grin

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 23/10/2021 10:03

I find it hard to believe that a hotel would allow this while other guests were booked in to stay. Confused

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 23/10/2021 10:03

Chillingham? It will be crawling with ‘investigators’ at this time of year. I’m surprised they are letting to regular guests at the same time, though. Seems to defeat the object. But then, they’re probably making up for covid closures.

You spoiled their fun a bit, OP, but if you’ve paid to stay you have as much right to be there as they do. I wouldn’t have bothered getting into a discussion though, or trying to debunk their belief.

And if it Chillingham, you must have been aware that this was why a lot of people visit - just opening the website would make that clear.

Arbitan · 23/10/2021 10:05

I agree that it’s all nonsense but it’s a bit shitty to interrupt a ghost hunt by pissing on their parade every time they get some “activity”. And we all know ghosts spend most of their afterlife moving furniture, light fittings and doors ever so slightly, so you never know.

Cocomarine · 23/10/2021 10:05

Funny as it seems to post about following them for the chandelier, and much as MNers might applaud you for your cleverness - that was a dick move.

Of course it’s all bullshit, but these people have made that choice. To follow them with your clever dick comments was just rude, and makes me suspect that you weren’t as polite when first going through the door as you suggest.

Why couldn’t you just get on to bed instead of actively following them to ruin their fun? Your chance to show off your superior deduction was more important to you than the fun they’d paid for.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 23/10/2021 10:05

I think you are a hilarious killjoy. You did not need to make comments, but they were very funny.

GreenClock · 23/10/2021 10:06

They sound like nutters. I think you should stick a white sheet over your head tonight and go running at them.

Seriously though - the hotel didn’t think this through. Both you and they should feel aggrieved.

Pythonista · 23/10/2021 10:06

And yes you had a right to be there but basically taking the piss out of something which is essentially harmless was a shitty thing to do

CallMeAChopper · 23/10/2021 10:07

It wasn’t a ghost tour thing, just one private team. A leader (or medium whatever they call themselves), a cameraman and a bloke doing all the equipment. I accept I shouldn’t have pissed on their beliefs though, I was feeling grumpy I suppose.

ThePlantsitter · 23/10/2021 10:09

I'm very impressed you didn't take the opportunity to put one of the bedsheets on and 'haunt' a corridor.

Like pp said I reckon you're both due a refund.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 23/10/2021 10:10

I don't believe in ghosts, but it sounds like you acted like a bit of a knobhead.

Bit of a superiority complex.

LadyGAgain · 23/10/2021 10:10

OP you've missed a trick. You should have shrouded yourself in a white sheet and jumped out of wardrobes and behind doors whispering "woooooooooo" 👻👻

Mantlemoose · 23/10/2021 10:11

@Totallydefeated

You were not unreasonable to get stuff from your car.

You were very unreasonable to piss on their chips. Are you always a fun sponge?

Yip this
Disfordarkchocolate · 23/10/2021 10:17

You sound very like my husband but without the swearing Smile

Seemssounfair · 23/10/2021 10:18

I dont believe in that shit either, but have been on ghost tours in the underground Vaults in Edinburgh and would never have ruined it for the other paying people on the tour (who were probably just pretending they believed too for a bit of fun).

Being a smartarse isn't funny, if the activity was disturbing you speak to reception instead of going out of your way to ruin their evening

BrilliantBulb · 23/10/2021 10:18

You were not unreasonable to open your window or get stuff from your car.

You were very unreasonable to follow them intentionally to spoil their fun.
