I ruined the ghost hunt

I was away last week staying in a castle. Supposedly a very haunted castle but I don’t believe in shit like that, I just like history.

Anyway during the night there was a paranormal investigation going on. I had to walk through the castle on my own to retrieve something from the car and as I walked through one room these guys were surrounding a door recording it and had all their equipment set up around it etc. I needed to get through it. I held back a bit (this was 10pm at night and I was tired, wanting to go to bed). Anyway the door moved slightly and they all got excited. I seriously just needed to get to my car so pointed out that this particular door always moves due to the draught coming up the stairs. Well they all looked daggers at me and asked what I was doing there!! I said I needed to get through the door! So they huffed ans puffed and moved all their shit and the leader said they would have to start again due to interference. I went through, got the stuff out of my car and made my way back through the castle. Unfortunately they had set all their stuff up again. I went through the door and set all the alarms off and they got angry and one said “let’s move to a different area, this is ridiculous”. I didn’t say anything, just headed back to my apartment.

Later that night I opened the bedroom window and instantly was hit with torches in my face. They had got excited due to “movement” from a “haunted room”. I got annoyed, went down to where they were and asked how much longer this would be going on. They said all night. So I told them where I was staying, pointed to the windows and said any movement from these rooms is just me walking around. They were not friendly. As I was speaking one started shrieking about a chandelier swinging in another room and they all went running. I went with them and pointed out the big fuck off fireplace that would inevitably cause a draught going through the room causing anything “hanging” to move. I was then told to “go away!” And was told I was ruining a night that had been planned for months. I told them they were ruining my night that had been planned for months too.
Who was being unreasonable?

@inappropriateraspberry

I'd be complaining to the hotel. They shouldn't have let them be doing that with 'regular' guests staying at the same time. It ruins your stay and their investigation! I presume that other guests would also have been staying and moving around the hotel, disrupting what they were doing. And in turn, they were disrupting your peaceful stay.
Absolutely. Each to their own, but having ordinary guests in and those who are there for other stuff which restricts access is not acceptable.
QueenSue · 23/10/2021 12:56

TBH I'd love to watch a documentary about ghosthunters where a scientist follows them and explains all the "ghost" sightings they get excited about like moving doors.

icedcoffees · 23/10/2021 12:59

We get it. You believe in ghosts.

I don't believe in ghosts, but people who do aren't harming anyone. Why would you go out of your way to spoil an evening event that people have paid for? It's a dick move.

If this is true, and OP wasn't happy, she should have spoken to hotel management - they're the ones who allowed the booked event go ahead while the hotel had paying guests.

NeonTetras · 23/10/2021 13:00

I don't understand people on here. The OP didn't make any dick moves. Honesty is the best policy and if you know that something is being misrepresented, you should tell them. I believe in hauntings and the paranormal btw, and shonks and conartists like them make it harder for true cases to be believed, so it pisses me off and I would definitely said something. If something has a simple explanation and you know it, it would be wrong of you not say. People on here are strange. Good on you for correcting them and setting them straight. You were classy, honest and matter of fact, not smug about it which was good.

spotcheck · 23/10/2021 13:04

@Pythonista

It's a nasty superior post - knowing that most MNers don't believe in that kind of thing so we can have a laugh at the poster's wit and cleverness

Its none of her business. If you over heard someone talking crap in a work meeting in a coffee shop, would you correct them too, even though it's not your meeting and nothing to do with you ? Butting into stuff uninvited is obnoxious behaviour.

No, she was smug and a spoilsport.

These people paid for an event that they were enjoying - lots of people sign up for these things even though they don't believe, it's just a bit of fun and something to do for Halloween.

There was absolutely no need to go around making comments about it being bullshit Hmm

Cocomarine · 23/10/2021 13:11

@Yourstupidityexhaustsme

Jesus, I would complain to the hotel MASSIVELY.

In fact, I'd want a discount. WTF. You're paying for what we can assume to be an expensive stately-home type hotel and they few times you've dared venture around you're being snapped at by a random camera crew doing a 'ghost hunt'?

Were you informed this would be happening in advance?

It’s a castle which advertises itself as “Britain’s Most Haunted” and runs ghost tours several nights a week.
NeonTetras · 23/10/2021 13:13

@icedcoffees You don't think these people were scammed and they don't have the right to know?? Honestly? Hmm Maybe it's just me, but if I saw people being scammed and/or getting the wrong impression when they've paid good money, I could not not say something. I would consider it a moral civic duty, and I would have (until this thread) expected that any other person would feel the same. Shrugs (disappointed look). Sorry but I would still tell, and this thread has shocked me.

Do you let children waiting at Santa’s Grotto know that they’re being conned?

NeonTetras · 23/10/2021 13:15

@ShirleyPhallus Give over! No one can reasonably compare Santa to this.

Tilltheend99 · 23/10/2021 13:15

YANBU to want to go through the door etc YABU to intentionally follow them about making interfering comments because others are enjoying an activity that doesn’t appeal to you. Are you that rude in normal circumstances?

TheBlackArt · 23/10/2021 13:16
@ShirleyPhallus Give over! No one can reasonably compare Santa to this.
Why can't they? It's a group of people being misrepresented, isn't it?

1forAll74 · 23/10/2021 13:16

I would probably have laughed at them, some of these ghost hunters can get very intense, going about with their cameras and recording equipment, and believe that they will experience some ghostly apparition whatever. I wouldn't say you spoiled their so called fun, when you were allowed to go about your own business in the castle.

Tillysfad · 23/10/2021 13:17

If this is real life I think I love it.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 23/10/2021 13:17

@TheBlackArt

No, but that's mainly because I wouldn't dare do that alone with 3 strange men while everyone else seems to have been in their rooms.

I always tell people the truth if it's being discussed though. I'm not entertaining insanity.

Getyourownback · 23/10/2021 13:19

The first bits were fine, you were not unreasonable, but following them and bursting their bubble over the chandelier was unkind. They weren’t disturbing you then, you were being antagonistic. Let the ghostbusters have their hobby (so long as it doesn’t keep you up, which it didn’t sound like it would. Ghost hunting sounds like a silent affair). It’s a better hobby than smoking crack and kicking pigeons.

Tilltheend99 · 23/10/2021 13:21

How do you know they had paid for anything other than a stay in the hotel and hadn’t organised the investigation themselves off of their own backs as it is a hobby they enjoy? I think train spotting is pretty crap hobby but I wouldn’t follow a group of train spotters around explaining that the trains are only here so people can travel from A to B and you should probably get out of my way because I need to use this station several times today and your hobby irritates me.

Persephoned · 23/10/2021 13:25

Wow. You could have just said ‘excuse me’ and gone through the door. All the bitching at them and following them round sounds really confrontational, I’m not surprised they were upset!

Tilltheend99 · 23/10/2021 13:26

@JesusIsAnyNameFree your truth I alway wonder about people who get so intimidated by the notion of anything beyond their immediate physical preview that they can just let others have an alternative view on matters of spirituality.

Tilltheend99 · 23/10/2021 13:26

*can’t

You think I should lie and be all woo when a friend says "look, ghost energy!". No, it's fucking dust.
