To feel so bad I have lost my diamond earrings

I have driven myself insane since realising they are gone. They were my wedding earrings and were given to me by my late grandfather. I only wore them for special occasions or work events, and either kept them in the safe or temporarily in a jewellery pouch on top of a shelf. Last sighting of the earrings was on 23 July, my first date night with my husband after a long lockdown! I am starting to think that maybe, as we came back late at night, I might have put them on top of the bedroom cabinet and they got knocked off and lost.

I have searched everywhere, in every room. Even emptied the vacuum cleaner. It just doesn't make sense, for such a valuable item, to have been lost so carelessly. I am driving myself mad with speculation: what if they were stolen? The only two people in the house since July have been my mother-in-law and a teenage neighbour (both came to cat-sit while we were on holiday). Surely not, but what if? It's a horrible feeling.

The insurance paid up to my single item limit (not the full value, but still a good amount). It's not for the money though... feeling so guilty and stupid. After this experience, I invested in Stackers and am going to send my most valuable jewellery items for a professional valuation. Don't know if I will ever be able to enjoy wearing jewellery again!

This is going to sound daft but try and forget about them. You've looked, you can't find them. The chances are they will turn up on their own (I'm not woo or anything).

I feel you - I lost one of my diamond stud earrings in the swimming pool. I was totally gutted Sad

Sorry about that. But why wouldn’t you enjoy wearing other jewellery?

I’ve lost gold necklaces and earrings to the tune of hundreds of pounds but told myself that shit happens and I now take extra special with remaining jewellery. Still enjoying wearing other jewellery.

Tryingtogetitright · 15/10/2021 14:06

Sounds really silly but try a prayer to St Anthony. I often find things I thought were lost forever. I'm sure they'll turn up one day in a "safe place" you popped them so you wouldn't lose them. And I also have a list in my notebook of lost things as I used to worry I'd forget about losing them and then never find them if that makes sense. Helped me get over it to get the thought out of my mind and onto the paper. (and eventually they all turned up)

WakeEatSleepRepeat · 15/10/2021 14:08

😂😂😂 @ rjacksmiss

DigOlBick · 15/10/2021 14:09

Kim, people are dying.

Also, a colleague's wife lost her wedding ring during a house move - she was devastated as it was both her grandmothers' wedding rings melted together and remade so irreplaceable. It turned up months later in a jewellery pouch in the inside pocket of her going out handbag - she'd put it there to keep it safe in the move. I hope something similar happens for you.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 15/10/2021 14:10

A woo moment from many years ago...
An aunt bought me a pair of enamelled bcak dcat earrings.. Knocked one into the dcat litter tray once and made the decision not to retrieve it...
Pair found in my jewellery box some months later...
Shock
Bet my last quid you find yours op
.

Noeuf · 15/10/2021 14:11

Oh I hate that. They will probably turn up at the bottom of a handbag or dh’s suit pocket. But awful to feel they are lost.

TheKeatingFive · 15/10/2021 14:14

They may still turn up.

This is why I only buy non valuable earrings though. They are so incredibly easy to lose.

nosyupnorth · 15/10/2021 14:18

Awww, it's such a shame. Sometimes you just need to embrace the sadness for a little while with things like that.

But maybe there is some hope - two years ago I lost a pair of gold earrings given to me by my grandfather and the last place I remembered having them was a hotel so I was certain they were gone for good but last month they turned up in a box of hair grips tucked away in the back of a drawer that I know I searched at the time but it was such a little box it clearly must have been hidden behind or underneath something.

3luckystars · 15/10/2021 14:18

Well at least they are both together wherever they are.

Offer St. Anthony some money if you find them. Good luck.

Starlitexpress · 15/10/2021 14:20

Lost a gold ring, showed up 18 months later.........in a vase! If you lost them in the house, they are still in the house.

Went to have a hard boiled egg the other day and the eggcup had 2 rings in, must have been there months and I must have taken taken them off as I was cooking, either, have no recollection of doing so.

pasturesgreen · 15/10/2021 14:23

Yet it happens. Overwhelmingly more likely they were lost than your MIL or neighbour had anything to do with it. At least insurance paid up, I hope you can find a similar style.

dottiedodah · 15/10/2021 14:28

I feel for you ,but honestly have lost rings and My DMs rings and a valuable book as well. My Cousin was burgled and had her jewellery from her Mum taken . As she said its just Stuff.Doubt your neighbour/MIL were to blame . Have a look for something similar .Only wear special occ maybe and put away ASAP.

Ygritte84 · 15/10/2021 14:29

Hah at the Kim comment Grin Grin Grin

Thank you so much for all the uplifting stories. This is clearly a first world problem, and it's really not a problem at all, I am just insanely annoyed with myself for being such a muppet!

If you were going on holiday did you put them somewhere for "safe keeping". My DH hates it when I use that phrase (normal means gone for a long time/for good in our household).

LaurieFairyCake · 15/10/2021 14:31

Who is Kim ? 🤷‍♀️😁

dottiedodah · 15/10/2021 14:32

TheKeatingFive Snap .I love M and S earrings .Hypo allergic and really well made .My best earrings that my Cousin bought me I only wear out on special occasins .My gold BL from DH for landmark birthday only in house or spec occasins

SirenSays · 15/10/2021 14:32

You never know OP they might turn up! My mother once found a ring she'd lost in the veg patch at her allotment a year later. I lost and replaced my engagement ring and then found the original wedged underneath a loose skirting board.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/10/2021 14:33

The diamond out of my engagement ring turned up about 18 months after I'd lost it (and long since replaced it, oops Blush)

mountbattenbergcake · 15/10/2021 14:35

@LaurieFairyCake

Who is Kim ? 🤷‍♀️😁
I'm guessing it's a reference to Kath and Kim the TV show but of course no one will actually say that.
